Trent Lott Resigning

Another Congressional Republican — this time a very high-ranking one — is heading for the exits. Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-MS) will announce his resignation today, the Associated Press reports, taking effect before the end of the year.

A source told the AP that there is nothing wrong with Lott's health, but that he is instead leaving to pursue "other opportunities." The obvious possibility would be a job as a lobbyist, but we'll see what Lott himself has to say.

Wow. Now that is news. The official end of an era, one might say. I would have guessed the only way Trent Lott would ever leave Senate would be feet first. In fact, I kind of figured him to make a play for minority leader, after McConnell either gets picked off by Democrats in the next election or forced out as leader by his own guys when they lose more seats.

lott is obviously being forced out.

it is either a brothel scandal, abramoff redux, the gonzo firings, aipac spying, or saudi corruption. could be a lotta things.

but he isnt leaving because he did a heckuva job. boy got booted.

user-pic

Who says there's never any good news?

user-pic

Cheney is next.

user-pic

I pity his family, with whom he will undoubtedly be spending the proverbial more time.

Lott is resigning to join the lobbying community before the January 2008 Lobbying Law kicks in, which would prohibit him from lobbying efforts for 2 years. It's not about family, it's about serving special interests and is soooo Republican.

user-pic

I wish Cheney were next. But that would go against the administration's master plan just before leaving office: Bush pardons Cheney, then resigns. Cheney takes the oath of office, then pardons Bush.

As for ol' Trent, this is a surprise to me.

Lobby law reason sounds ok. But I'd rather he had to do it to spend more time with his lawyers--another GOP queen gets outed!

user-pic

The resignation comes now because there is a Republican Governor who can appoint another Republican to fill his seat and who can then run as an incumbant....

nice huh?

I'd be surprised if Lott were leaving under the shadow of a criminal investigation. He's smarter than most of the rest of those guys and I tend think of him as more of an old school, power is its own reward, kind of guy than someone from the more recent school of power is good, power and money, even better.

You never know, I guess, what with the amount of graft that's been laying around on the Repub party side of the aisle for the last decade or so. But my first suspicion was that Lott might have started putting out feelers about getting his old office back and found out the team didn't want him as their captain anymore. It seems pretty unusual for someone forced out of a leadership position like that to stay on in Congress as long as he has. I've always assumed the reason he did was that he had designs on making a comeback.

user-pic

Lobbying reason is a canard.

He can advise/consult/liaison and still receive the big lobbying bucks. No loss in status and big payday.

It's standard practice for the one year, it'll be standard for the two year.

Maybe it's that he can't use the Congressional gym? Or that he's embarrassed by the Barbershop Quartet he was in with Larry Craig? These are as valid as the lobbying.

user-pic

Sounds like more Repub house cleaning to me. A position as high as his though, leads me to believe that the top would be the last section of the clean up and we should be finding out why this is happening sooner, rather than later. Forced out like a previous poster mused? I think so. During recess. Yep. House cleaning.

As Dylan says
"You just wanna be on the side that's winnin'"

user-pic

I think he's just bummed out because Bush never came back and shared that mint julep on his re-built porch.

I will reiterate my paranoid stance from an earlier 'repubs retiring' thread....

I have been BAFFLED by their departures. These guys NEVER give up power and rapine abilities. They are all about grasping and grinding and squeezing every last drop.
I believe this may be a reason:
They know something pretty horrible is coming down the pike and they do not want to be associated with it. False Flag crap, huge voting rights bamboozlement, martial law, suspensions of rights....who knows.

NONE of the reasons they have individually given makes sense. As a whole, there seems no rhyme or reason to this either- that I have been able to grasp. What are the reasons, en masse, that have been floated? That they are facing minority status for longer than a 2 year period and don't have the stomach? Tougher lobbying or accountability standards coming down the pike? Personal scandal or accountability issues in their closet? Want to spend time with family?

I cannot debunk these, and for a rare one or two congresscritters there may be some actual truth. (a scandal or distaste for the gameplaying)
But the timing and sheer numbers (more sure to follow) is making my gizzard queasy.

user-pic

Quitting is easier than continuing to support an administration that has failed at everything. Lott's retirement gift should be an "I supported the worst president ever" bumper sticker.

per dave's comment,

over at Fox Business news central Larry Flynt has just told host Neil Cavuto that he'll be dropping a sex scandal bombshell in a matter of days (link through Atrios - I don't watch Fox otherwise).

I'm sure it's the lobbying thing....but the Flynt thing sounds so juicy....

user-pic

Uh, just checked the Fox story again, and the dateline is October 26th. Damn you, Atrios, fooled me again!

user-pic

one word... VECO

user-pic

Two words: Larry Flynt?

user-pic

Never posted before, but can't help wondering with all these resignations......cut and run????

Before Trent Lott leaves, would someone please remind him to follow up with the investigation Benton K. Partin, Brigadier Gen. USAF (Ret.) requested back on July 31, 1995 after he reported "conclusive proof that the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was not caused solely by the truck bomb. Evidence shows that the massive destruction was primarily the result of four demolition charges placed at critical structural points at the third floor level."

General Partin had requested "that [Trent Lott}, as a Member of Congress, you will support a Congressional investigation to determine the true initiators of this bombing, which could not have occurred the way in which it has been portrayed as having happened. Further, it is requested that you defer action and reserve judgment on so called antiterrorism legislation that has serious civil liberties implications, and which would not be passed except for the Oklahoma City bombing until the causes of the Oklahoma City disaster are determined by independent investigators."

Now, if Trent Lott had followed General Partin's lead, "we wouldn't have had all these problems over
all these years either."
