Thompson Opposes Anti-Abortion Amendment

In a break with social conservative orthodoxy, Fred Thompson said yesterday on Meet The Press that he would not endorse a constitutional amendment to ban abortions, which has been a part of the Republican platform since 1976.

"Before Roe v. Wade, states made those decisions," Thompson said. "I think people ought to be free at state and local levels to make decisions that even Fred Thompson disagrees with. That's what freedom is all about."

David Brody gave a very blunt review: "The way things are going all he needs now is to buy the gun that shoots him in the foot."

One of the strangest thing about Thompson is that he actually seems to have some principle. I just figured that he had made a bargain with the GOP that he'd swap his fame, height, and drawl for an unyieldingly orthodox GOP platform.

It turns out that he's got some beliefs that stem from something other than a Faustian bargain.

He opposes the amendment cuz the Republican Party would lose their voting base cuz once that was accomplished rampant corporatism and "let's kill folk" messages become a hard sell to thumpers.

As a politician he should not have mentioned it . . .

In reality, isn't that what the traditional conservative argument should be?

@ Jmac -- That's exactly what I thought when I read this.

He's earned a bit of respect in my eyes for this - but not enough to sway my blue vote.
