Thompson Calls For Ground Force Of One Million Troops
In a speech yesterday at The Citadel in South Carolina, Fred Thompson called for expanding the size of the military to a one-million strong ground force. Thompson declared, "We've been asking too few troops to do too much for too long."
"Half measures and small increases will no longer do," he added. "We need the best all-volunteer force that can meet the security needs of this country. And they must be organized, trained and equipped to deal with tomorrow's threats as well as today."

Alternately, we could just go ahead and get the hell on out of Iraq.

How exactly does he propose doing this with an all volunteer force? The army and marines haven't been meeting recruiting goals just to maintain the current force level, let alone increase it. Does he propose a draft? How does he propose to pay for this? Is he planning on shutting down the rest of the government other than the department of defense? Why doesn't the media ask these types of gd questions? WTF.

This is so absurd. He's calling for a larger increase in troops than the Pentagon has even asked for. Hell, he's calling for a larger increase than Kagan, Kristol or .
Additionally, if you look at his speech it's not only troops, but military modernization and more research in SDI. Where exactly does that money come from? Oh yeah, and how do ANY of those keep us safer from terrorist threats, it isn't like SDI has been all that successful and the most modern, largest, military in the world can't do much against 30 guys in random apartments in the Middle East. For that you need intelligence, translators, effective humanitarian infrastructure, and special ops.
