Rudy's New Hampshire Mailer: I Will End Illegal Immigration
As part of an under-the-radar effort to win over New Hampshire voters by portraying himself as a "national security conservative," the Rudy campaign has dropped this mailer, forwarded to us by a GOP source, on immigration in the state:

What's amusing about this, of course, is that back when Rudy had the "security of 8 million people" on his soldiers -- that is, back when he was Mayor of New York -- he explicitly said that we would "never, ever be able to totally control immigration," and even embraced the idea of illegal immigration.
Now that he's running in a GOP primary, however, he's pointing to that same mayoralty as proof that he's the candidate to end illegal immigration completely.
Late Update: The Rudy campaign is pursuing a similar under-the-radar strategy in Iowa. An immigration mailer the campaign dropped in that state is after the jump.
Rudy's Iowa mailer:

Well, it's not quite so outrageous as somebody along the lines of the governor of California making a similar claim... All the same, um, hehe. Oh, Rudy. He tries so hard to run the "textbook" campaign the Clinton campaign is succeeding with (but, ya know, the Republican edition), and yet comes off so awkward in so doing. I really hope he gets nominated. Lord knows the fun we'll have with Giuliani going up to a general election. I feel as though he has the capacity only to become more absurd.

I hope the people of NYC are getting a good look at who they elected for so many years. I don't see how such a fascist like Rudy can get elected in NYC. Guess the same way Romney was elected as the gov of Mass. I hope the dems will finally get out next year & vote or take advantage of the absentee option for a change. The repubs are by far a minority, but, they vote! If they win elections, it's because non-repug's let them!

Looks like fascist RG has Rove writing stuff for him, so glad Karl is not unemployed. Seriously this seems to be typical repub sound bytes (from the huge disinfo attack machine they run) to me, maybe though this time around the crapola is not so believable!! I hope.

You can't have it both ways.
You are either FOR the rule of law or you are AGAINST the rule of law.
If it is a BAD law, then there are lawful and democratic procedures by which the BAD law can be replaced by a GOOD law.
But as it stands, there is a reason that ILLEGAL immigration is, well, illegal.
I would never vote for Rudy, but all he is saying here is that he would enforce the laws of the United States of America as they currently stand. So its a flip-flop, but he's flopped on the side of the law. What is the big deal?

I can't believe it. One whole mailer with no mention of the date 9/11. He referred to a "crisis situation," which one would assume refers to 9/11, but he didn't specifically state 9/11. I wonder if he'll lose some voters now because the bozos supporting this guy might not pick-up backhanded reference.
Also, next he'll do a mailer on cutting out food stamps, because the assumption by the repuke supporters is that food stamps go to those stinking, undeserving minorities. Therefore, lets starve all the minorities. They are all a bunch of welfare queens, remember that one.

It's illegal, too, to watch a whole lot of what's on YouTube, illegal to sleep with your significant other outside of the missionary (in many states), illegal for Amish not to pay your taxes. These are a few laws that exist but aren't enforced because it would be absurd and generally against common interest to do so. I can make you a guarantee that you're technically guilty of several felonies. If you really want the law to be enforced as written and, as in the case of immigration, cripple our economy, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.
Personally, I think that if a law doesn't seem to make sense in its current context. I understand that in my home state of North Dakota it's still legal to shoot and kill Native people if they're standing armed in a group of six or more and you're in a covered wagon. Obviously this wasn't quite meant to apply to today. Our laws on immigration are unquestionably outdated but until they get fixed, enforcing them is impractical (yes, we spend a lot of money on immigrants illegally in this country, but it'd be a helluva lot more expensive to keep them out of this country and they bring a lot of productivity into our economy) and immoral.

does the creeping police state language of these mailers scare anyone else? it takes some impressive ideological gymnastics for movement conservatives to endorse government maintained databases of people with biometric IDs.

What Seth H. said.
I really have to wonder how many of those screaming their heads off about "illegal means illegal" can honestly claim never to have broken a speed limit or never to have evaded taxes, and would be happy to have the full rigor of the law enforced against their children if they drink underage or smoke marijuana.

Oh come on. No other 1st world or most countries is w/o basic immigration laws.
What do we do, let 30 million more illegal immigrants into the US?! Or do away with the southern border? We have much more liberal immigration laws than most of Europe. We are a sovereign nation & it would be crazy not to have any basic immigration laws.
But otherwise I don't see how you can compare immigration laws with those of a cheezy Internet site.
Yes there are lots of laws that are not or rarely enforced, but that does not mean that something like national borders should not at least be fairly secure & some attempt to do something about millions per year crossing them illegally.

Do not, repeat, do not root for Rudy to win the nomination. You do not really want the GOP's Rove/Cheney Fear Fascism to morph into all fascism all the time. Many mainstream business-head Republicans are not on board with the hijacking of the GOP, but you will never peel them away from voting party line. Most country club Republicans suspect that Thompson, Romney and McCain are just lying about being neocons and anti-privacy in order to become President, so voting for them is not an endorsement of the New American Century project. Don't root for them to have to vote for Rudy. Force them to defend the indefensible and they will--forever.

BTW, please note in today's sidebar that the pathetic turncoat, Wellstone-basher, and former Viet protester but current chicken-hawk Norm Coleman is already no better than tied for re-election before ANY substantial campaigning by Franken (or Ciresi) has begun. EMILY is right, early money is like yeast, and Blue State shows that Al hasn't been getting much love so far. Help take down Norm and put a comedian in the Senate instead of a clown! Spread the love.

Steve,
I can't speak for Seth, but what I am objecting to is the simplistic "for or against the rule of law" rhetoric with the implication that any attempt to deal with facts on the ground is "against the rule of law". We make choices about what laws to obey and to enforce ALL the time. Universal enforcement is a Benthamite fiction.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't have immigration laws (I agree with you), nor that we should just give up enforcing them because they are often ignored.
But it does mean that "illegal is illegal" is arrant nonsense that just delays the moment when we can have a real discussion about our society's priorities with regard to immigration.

Go Rudie, Go Rudeee, Go Rudeeee!!!
The only reason these fascists who are a small minority win is because not enough dems or non-repugs get off their asses & vote!
If we had even 50% voter participation there would be few repugs in office anywhere! Now that at least some of us realize what apathy breads, maybe the motivation to vote will be greater.

As a native Minnesotan (via North Dakota, as mentioned earlier), I'm going to throw in WOOT! when it comes to the notion of Coleman getting ousted. I was heartbroken the day Wellstone died. Paul was the first person to get me interested in politics when I was about five. I held his coat for him when he was talking in Moorhead, MN, my hometown. The talk opened my mind to the notion of a whole world of which I was unaware, a notion that festered into an ongoing curiosity in the operation of government and the fine subtleties of modern-day political maneuvering. I became ill when Coleman won. I can think of few worse people to fill the void created by Paul's far-too-early passing.

Not enough has been said or written about how Giuliani decided to locate his emergency management and control center in WTC building 7 against advice that it might be a bad idea to locate it in the middle of a terrorist target. Not only was the control center rendered useless on 9/11, but the diesel fuel needed for backup power generation ignited, causing the building to collapse. Giuliani should be considered to be the 20th 9/11 terrorist, single-handedly bringing down one of the WTC buildings that day.

Can someone parse the phrase, "Proven Results" for me? Honestly, I can't make sense of it, linguistically or logically. It's clunky and redundant. Not that this is Rudy's biggest problem, but it's annoying the piss out of me.

That mailing is almost criminal in itself when he says he had the weight of 8 million people on his shoulders and was being constantly tested and that gives him credibility.
I wonder how those who advised him not to put the Command Centre in Tower 7 yet he did it anyway feel about his credibility when he just recently denied anyone told him anything.
Or how about having him wait 7 years until he replaced the firemen's radios that didn't work during the first attack, to find the new ones were untested and just arrived one day through a no bid contract and failed. They were replaced with the old ones a week later, and theyhad o use the broken ones again on 9/11? Or how about finding out that 343 firefighters died because they couldn't hear the orders to evacuate while not one policeman was lost that day because their radios did work, and he tried to spin it that the firefighters were lost because they disobeyed their commanders. Or how about when firefighters protested that they wanted to continue looking for their fallen when Rudy ordered the remains to be scooped and taken to the dump, he had the protesting firefighters arrested! Yeh........Rudy has shown his true colours and they are not patriotic ones. I recently found two websites all about Rudy..."the real rudy" and Rudy-Urban Legend" They have lots of videos up by firefighters and their families who are not impressed with Rudy's leadership skills.

Rudy was elected at a time when the crime rate was high and he was a "proven" crime fighter, having recently battled the previously formidable NY mob. By most accounts Rudy's first term left a good impression in most people's minds, mostly because crime went down and Rudy got the credit for being Daddy to NYC (Deserved? I don't know).
His second term, however, was going downhill because Rudy's authoritarian streak was starting to show and people were growing tired of his unnecessary combativeness. He was bullying too many people in a city that can be a huge pain in the butt, but requires some level of civility to work (See: Bloomberg, Michael). That is, until Rudy had the good fortune of a terrorist attack on that city he "protected" (much like President Shrub).
But if you want to know if this city learned it's lesson, I believe it was TPM which showed that in a head-to-head against Hillary, Rudy looses at something like 65%-35%.

Subject: Fwd: FW: Best Editorial on Illegal Immigration
Let's say I break into your house
A lady wrote the best letter in the Editorials
in ages!!! It explains things better than all
the baloney you hear on TV.
Her point:
Recently large demonstrations have taken place
across the country protesting the fact that Congress
is finally addressing the issue of illegal immigration.
Certain people are angry that
the US might protect its own
borders, might make it harder
to sneak into this country and,
once here, to stay indefinitely.
Let me see if I correctly understand
the thinking behind these protests.
Let's say I break into your house.
Let's say that when you discover
me in your house, you insist that I leave.
But I say, "No! I like it here.
It’s better than my house. I've made all
the beds and washed the
dishes and did the laundry
and swept the floors. I've
done all the things you don't
like to do. I'm hard-working
and honest
(except for when I broke into your house).
However; according to the protesters:
You are Required to let me stay in your house
You are Required to feed me
You are Required to add me to your family's insurance plan
You are Required to Educate my kids
You are Required to Provide other benefits to me & to my family
(my husband will do all of your yard work because
he is also hard-working and honest, except for that
breaking in part).
If you try to call the police or force me out,
I will call my friends who will picket your
house carrying signs that proclaim my
RIGHT to be there.
It's only fair, after all, you have
a nicer house than I do, and I'm just
trying to better myself. I'm a hard-working
and honest, person, except for well,
you know, I did break into your house
And what a deal it is for me!!!
I live in your house, contributing only a
fraction of the cost of my keep, and
there is nothing you can do about it
without being accused of cold,
uncaring, selfish, prejudiced, and
bigoted behavior.
Oh yeah, I DEMAND that you learn
MY LANGUAGE!!! so you can
communicate with me.
Why can't people see how ridiculous
this is?! Only in America .
If you agree, pass it on (in English ).
Share it if you see the value of it.
If not ~ blow it off.........
along with your future Social Security
funds, and a lot of other things.

Well, no. It's a lousy analogy and an absurd bit of nonsense.
Let's just, for the sake of discussion, assume that the U.S. is even remotely like a house. So, about all of these unwelcome visitors you are so concerned with?
Someone invited them in.
Someone who LIVES in the house.
Citizens of the house invited the dreaded ferriners in, by giving them work.
You have fallen for the latest regurgitation of a very old scapegoat.
Congratulations.

So Rudy is going to stop illegal immigration.
I guess he might stop illegal use of drugs and stop violence in Iraq whilst he's at it.
And if he could stop illegal immigration... how much would it cost?
I think it's important to remember that all wars are expensive including those on illegal immigration and Rudy's not talking about funding this war with his own money.

Actually Mark, if we are relating the US to a house, your argument would be like my kid saying "Yeah, you can come in." Just because a person is invited into a house does not make that person a member of that household. And if that person is a criminal (e.g. just escaped from jail), given an invitation into my house doesn't suddenly negate the fact that that person is a criminal.
