Richardson Proposes Presidential Sleepovers — In Average Americans' Homes

Bill Richardson has a novel idea for how he would stay in touch with average Americans as president: He would not only meet with regular people, he would even schedule sleepovers in their homes. "I would stay in touch," he told an Iowa crowd. "I would be a grass-roots president."

It's an interesting idea, and perhaps the populist touch of the proposal might win a few votes in Iowa. On the other hand, if President Richardson were to pursue it, you can bet the Secret Service would do everything they could to persuade him otherwise.

Not a new idea. Jimmie Carter used to do this.

You'd think there'd be a less gimmicky and less...creepy(?)...way of keeping in touch with the American People.

I thought this was really strange and "creepy" as well. Bill R., Carter did this? I don't remember that, really?

I remember an 8 Is Enough episode where carter had dinner with Dick Van Patten and brood, but I don;t remember him doing it in real life.

hell, I would let him sleep over, not that he would sleep. I've got a 3 year old, a seven month old, and 2 dogs. I've been up since 3am with all sorts of shit on my mind. We could talk about the dollar, why I hate republicans and people who speed down my street. We could talk about the hoodlums that tag my fence, our looming assimilation by the Chinese, why New Mexican green chile is the bomb, and how I can make more money. I live in 1000 sq ft 2br 1ba, so he could sit on the pot while the rest of us eat breakfast, working in shifts. He could take out the garbage and scoop some dog shit while he's at it.

He's pulling a reverse Clinton-Lincoln-Bedroom!

Golly . . . I did not know Richardson's funds were so low that he couldn't afford hotels anymore . . .

There'd be too many stories about how Richardson clogs up the shower-drain and makes the sheets on the guest-room bed smell like eggs.

He stayed at a local residence during a trip to Clinton, Mass. early in 1977 for his first "town meeting."
