Poll: Stevens' And Young's Ratings In Bad Shape

A new poll from Alaska firm Hays Research shows Senator Ted Stevens (R) and Congressman Don Young (R), who have both been caught up in ethics scandals, suffering from pretty bad ratings.

Only 44% of respondents gave Ted Stevens a positive ratings, compared to 38% who feel negatively about him. But as it turns out, Stevens' numbers are the good ones. Young has a positive rating of 34%, with 48% negative.

Democrats have yet to find an opponent for Stevens, but have been courting Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. Former state House Minority Leader Ethan Berkowitz and former state Democratic chair Jake Metcalfe are both seeking the Dem nomination to run against Young.

Dianne Benson is also running for Young's seat. She isn't a buddy of the establishment in AK.

Both Sen. Stevens and Rep. Young will be turned out of office in 2008. They are too stubborn, too proud and too old to acknowledge that the GOP would have a much better shot at holding on to these seats if they stepped down.

As a Dem leaning independent in Alaska, I have to disagree. Stevens and Young could win back their seats without ever running a TV commercial, giving an in-state speech, or shaking a single Alaskan voter's hand. The people of AK, paying no state income tax nor sales tax to fund their government, love the federal dollars that these two senior republicans bring to the state. Additionally, the majority of the population believes the Democrats will shut down all oil/gas/mineral exploration and development in the state if elected and that electing a Democrat would amount to economic suicide. So they don't care how corrupt our Republican politicians become, they'll keep putting them back in office.

Remember, a poll a few weeks ago had Rep. Young TRAILING Berkowitz in Alaska... a very bad sign for the GOP!

Funny that you should fail to mention Diane Benson who held Young to his worst showing in an election in 20 years. Young had to out spend her 10 to one and his $2mill barley got him 56% of the vote. Diane Benson got 40%! The two top contenders in Alaska for congress are Benson and Berkowitz, check current polling. Last I looked the Jake2008 campaign was scoring in single digits.

That means that 34-44% of Alaskans are so in love with the word "republican" that they're willing to ignore decades of corruption. Amazing.

Alaskans would elect a monkey if it had an (R) behind it.
