Poll: Hillary And Edwards Tied In North Carolina Primary

A new poll in North Carolina from Democratic firm Public Policy Polling shows the Democratic primary to be a tie between Hillary Clinton and favorite son Senator John Edwards, with each at 30%. Barack Obama comes in third with 22%. Although Edwards served one term as a U.S. Senator from the state, he has been unable to secure a commanding lead in the primary.

On the Republican side, Fred Thompson has a 24% plurality, with Rudy Giuliani at 19%, Mitt Romney with 10%, and John McCain at 8%.

In the Democratic primary for Senate, state Senator Kay Hagan leads businessman Jim Neal 24%-13%, with 8% going for frequent candidate John Ross Hendrix, and an astonishing 55% undecided. Clearly, both Hagan and Neal still have a lot of work to do in simply building up name recognition.

Late Update: A SurveyUSA poll released yesterday paints an even bleaker picture for Edwards — it has Hillary leading him in North Carolina by a 43%-25% margin, with Obama at 19%.

PPP needs to go over to Rasmussen and teach them how to poll...34% 24% come on he's the favorite son from North Carolina.

If Edwards and Clinton were tied in NY, the press would say she was through - why is Edwards treated like a viable candidate? He's no more likely to eb the nominee than Biden or Gravel for that matter

As for the NC Senatorial race, neither Neal or Hagan can defeat Elizabeth Dole.

If the NC Democratic Party has a brain, they'll go all out to try and get either David Kirby (Edwards' former law partner) or Heath Shuler to run for the Senate.

I worry about Shuler's House seat, because I don't think another Democrat could win it, but I don't see any way that Shuler could lose a Senate race against Dole, especially with Shuler taking the lead on the "illegal immigration" issue.

Shuler's too conservative for my liking, but he would destroy Dole.

Kirby is less conservative, and he'd debate Dole into a pulp.

Either one would be better than Neal or Hagan.

Wouldn't one have said the same about John Kerry in Nov 2003?

Agreed with the above. That Edwards cannot even pull way ahead in his home state against the very "polarizing" Hillary is sign that he through. He has, in fact, been a "dead man walking" for from the git-go. The Dems hate "reruns" so that the "John Edwards Show" won't on your winter or spring TV schedule...not even in syndication. In fact, had he won the NC for Kerry last time, he'd V.P. and enjoying an advantage for 2012...Oh, well...

Hmm, why didn't my hyperlink work? In any event, the poll numbers to which I was trying to link are found here:

The North Carolina primary is way down the road. The only reason a NC primary poll would even be commissioned now would be to help Hilliary. Do you people REALLY believe these polls? If you do, I have a bridge to sell you.

Even the poll showing Clinton with a 43 percent to 25 percent lead is a good showing in comparison to Edwards' standing in other states.

The problem is that North Carolina comes later in the process and there is a good chance that Edwards won't be around anymore by the time the North Carolina primary rolls around.

The North Carolina primary is not until May. I think it is a safe bet that the results in all the other states scheduled between January and April will have an effect on what happens in North Carolina.

Of course noting that rather obvious fact would in turn imply that maybe a bunch of these polls, including the national polls, aren't really telling us much about what is ultimately going to happen. And that is something certain folks don't want us to figure out.
