McConnell: Iraq War Is "Winding Down"

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN yesterday that the Iraq War is "winding down," and it won't be a factor in the 2008 race.

"The war is winding down," he said. "Next year's election is going to be about this Congress and what it failed to do."

McConnell cited recent reports of lower death tolls, and predicted "fewer and fewer troops in Iraq, fewer and fewer casualties, more and more ... return to normalcy."

Quite the dreamer, Mr. Elaine Chao.
Corrupt, slimy, ugly, dishonest, and that picture above, oh man!

repub talking point: change the subject from the war. prevent congress from doing anything - so you can say they did nothing.

Lesson to be learned: impeach.

If the repubs are bent on obstruction, use the time wisely.

Sorry, I may be dim, but where does this "lower death toll" meme originate? More soldiers have died in 2007 (and the year isn't over yet) than in any previous year since 2003 ...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN yesterday that the Iraq War is "winding down,"

Is the "surge" winding down? Don't think so, but it this isn't running from the Bushie GOP slaughter machine, that what is?

Just remember Mitch:

Dick Cheney: "Our mission is to do everything we can to prevail on what is ... We didn't get elected to worry just about the fate of the Republican Party.

Maybe if loyalist Mitch begs for job on as a boardmember to Halliburton, or something - so Cheney is the go to guy for that position, if it's availible but they might be cronied out by now.

The Lexington, KY Herald-Leader did a good series on this individual a few months ago. It's still available online at http://www.kentucky.com/233

Just another Repug talking point, now confirmed. First Lieber-twit said it. Now McConnell. Any time you hear the exact same words from different sources in the cabal you know it is the latest in propaganda from them.

I fervently hope that all Republicans in Congress and campaigning for president take McConnell's words firmly to heart. A filibuster-proof majority for Democrats in the Senate would be extremely helpful in particular for speeding up repairs of the damage Republicans have done to our government. More Democratic seats in the House wouldn't hurt a damned thing either, even with a Democratic president in the White House.

This sounds to me like a drum beat. Could it be that they are getting ready to declare victory? They will leave the troops in place of course. KBR can't make a profit serving overpriced meals to empty chow halls. And the troops will soon be needed for the war in Iran. But, victory is at hand, only six more months and we will see it all come to fruition.

&*@#$)% The reason there has been a recent DECREASE in attacks in Iraq is not because of the surge but rather because a certain Shi'ia cleric has called on his "army" to stand down for the next several months.

When the Sadr Army resumes it's attacks on the US Army and their fellow countrymen the blood will flow.

Wolf "Behold My Lupine Visage" Blitzer and the rest of the Nattering Nabobs seems to think things are getting "peaceful" because of the surge.

Haha. Mitch McConnell is going to lose for sure if he continues like this. He is already going very scared about his reelection next year, and the first polls of the race show him stunningly weak.

I've been betting against McConnell online. I'm more than happy to call this bluff!

Great!!! Let's declare victory and bring them all home NOW!!! What's the hold-up?

I predict the following:

Iraqi civilian deaths will decrease because the entire country has become balkinized and ethnically cleansed. So many Iraqis have left the country, that there are less potential victims.

The GOP will claim that the decrease in Iraqi civilian deaths is progress.

Since there is still no real political solution in Iraq, eventually the Shia and Sunnis will start killing each other again (Al quaida will make sure of this by provoking attacks), and then all hell will break loose again and US military deaths will increase.

By then, Bush will be close to out of office and the GOP will claim that the surge worked and the democrats are losing the war.

In the meantime, the US economy will collapse due to the debt from the war. The dollar will be 50 cents on the Canadian dollar and we will be in the largest depression since the 1930's as our national debt soares and the rich retain their precious tax breaks. The republicans will claim (like Hoover) that the free market will get us out of it and that if we only lower taxes on the rich - the economy will recover.

Just remember, Mitch (Senator from Tobacco) voted against Schip because of the tax on cigarettes.

Well, he does make a good point, if there are less troops, there will be less casualties.

Though I thought if we didn't wind down over there, so that we wouldn't get wound up over here? Or somesuch. Like when we left Vietnam--then they came over in their bid to build a worldwide communist Caliphate that spread from Ho Chi Minh to Spain.

Those poor bastards in Barcelona never even had a chance.

What do we do if this adventure turns successful? What do we have to offer other than criticism of the status quo?

I think we ought to give 100 percent thanks and praise to all who has and are still fighting and protecting us from harm! All the lives living and dead cannot have enough Thanks to them! I think Mitch Mcconnell needs to go!!!!He definitly needs to appologize for his remarks
