McCain Tells Iowans Again: He's Against Ethanol Subsidies
John McCain made a bold move yesterday in Iowa — He reiterated his opposition to ethanol subsidies, and did it in front of biofuel supporters at a renewable-energy conference.
McCain said that he does not believe the subsidies are necessary, and that he thinks American farmers can compete in the world without them.
"I trust Americans," McCain said. "I trust the markets. And I oppose subsidies."

Good for McCain. Ethanol from corn is about a dumbass idea -- we should be growing sugar beets or something for that. And subsidies for ethanol from corn are a pretty bold faced give-away to agribusiness that also subsidizes way too much agricultural production being devoted to growing way too few different crops -- the corn fields of America being one of the single greatest contributors to our country's obesity problem.
It's got to take great big brass ones for a politician to get up on a stage in Iowa and say that during the height of caucus campaign season. McCain deserves kudos for that, even if he is kind of an asshole.
