McCain Camp Negotiating Big Loan, Getting 527 Help In South Carolina
The McCain campaign is trying a new tactic to boost their funds, reportedly negotiating a $3 million loan in order to obtain the seed money they'll need to turn his currently boost in the polls into some real progress on the ground.
The campaign has also been considering taking matching funds, but they don't want to be encumbered by the per-state spending restrictions that come with the public money.
Meanwhile, the campaign finance reform advocate will be getting some help from a curious outside source, with an new independent group about to run ads on his behalf in South Carolina. The ads are being produced by longtime GOP ad man Rick Reed, who also co-produced the Swift Boat ads in 2004. McCain's aides said they have no involvement or knowledge of the ads.
The group making them, calling itself Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America, is being finance mainly by McCain supporters, and Reed himself was a volunteer with the McCain campaign earlier this year.

At least now we know what McCain was up to when he missed the balloting on the Mukasey nomination.

Why borrow money John? Just take the public financing. It will give you a quick infusion of cash for what is going to be a short primary season anyway. It will all be decided on the morning of February 6, 2008.

Bump in the polls my ass. All we're seeing right now is fallout from the Fred Thompson fizzle. The thing is, when Thompson was ascending in the polls he took mostly from Giuliani and McCain. However the supporters fleeing him now seem to be migrating to the four leading candidates almost equally. So while McCain is seeing a little bump nationally the last few weeks, so are Giuliani, Romney and Huckabee, meaning positions for those four relative to each other have remained virtually unchanged since Thompson peaked.
That's nationally. In Iowa, NH and SC, where McCain has been in a full flameout nose dive most of the year, the giveback from Thompson has been enough to slow his descent, maybe flatten him out at best. He's yet to actually retake any ground in any of them. In fact, since McCain is still either pointed down in places where most of the others are leveling off, or leveling off where they're trending upward at this point, his relative position is still getting worse not better in most cases.

I wonder what his buddy Russ Feingold's gonna think of that come-out-of-nowhere 527 help.

If yard signs are indicative of support, watch out John McCain... because there are tons of Ron Paul signs in South Carolina
