Massachusetts Moves Primary Up

Yet another state is joining the February 5 national primary. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick (D) signed a bill yesterday to move the state's primary up from March 4 — which was the Super Tuesday date in the last cycle.

It's not clear, however, whether moving the primary up will actually make the state any more relevant. As the Washington Post points out, Democrats might focus their energies on larger states that day, like California, while Republicans might just concede the state to Mitt Romney, who served as governor and has been running a lot of ads in that media market in order to reach New Hampshire.

I don't know if Romney would actually win the primary. Look at this recent general election poll from the state -- Romney is DESTROYED by Clinton, whereas Giuliani is competitive.

Romney's strength in Massachusetts is that Republicans don't read. The Democrats and others know what he has said about them.

Back to the topic:

A year long campaign only benefits the corporate media. Somone needs to follow the money and the percent media ownership shares in the states moving their Primaries.

If I were running a large state I'd push my primary back to September . . . Imagine everyone fighting for California's or New York's electorial votes . . . Talk about 'gee-ooood tee vee'.

Given that Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick has endorsed Barack Obama, and even campaigned for him in New Hampshire, I think it's safe to say that Obama could benefit from an earlier Mass. primary.

Obama is supposed to be in Boston this weekend, as it turns out.

Massachusetts is a 'two-fer' with NH primary elections ads being carried on Boston stations, so it makes sense to have it early in the cycle.
