Jimmy Carter Distances Himself From Kucinich On UFOs

Dennis Kucinich just got a little lonelier in his position on UFOs. During the debate this week, Kucinich cited Jimmy Carter's well-known experience as another example of people seeing strange things in the sky.

But now Carter has told CNN that he does not at all believe the object he and about 25 other people saw — a round object that changed colors — was actually any sort of alien spaceship.

"It was unidentified as far as we were concerned, but I think it's impossible in my opinion, some people disagree, to have space people from other planets or other stars to come to us," said Carter. "I don't think that's possible."

Thanks, Dennis, for making me sound like a loon. I have enough bad press from the wingnuts already, thank you. So I'm not hopping on the aliens bus with you.

Best regards,

Jimmy

Kucinich is running an advocacy campaign and I have some respect for that. But can't advocates of dropping out of multilateral trade agreements find somebody that is less of a nutjob?

user-pic

This whole UFO incident just serves to highlight how screwed up this country is. Admitting you might have seen a UFO gets you constantly lambasted, yet admitting you DON'T have an imaginary friend named Jesus destroys your chances of holding a position in office even more.

Pussy.

I'm starting to get annoyed with the fact that the only coverage Kucinich gets is about his UFO sighting. Did TPM sign a secret pact with the MSM declaring Kucinich's ideas too dangerous, even for progressives, and agreeing to paint him as a wacko instead of evaluating his ideas?

How does Carter's statement serve to "distance himself" from Kucinich? Did Dennis Kucinich say that he saw an unidentified object AND also say that he firmly believes it that is was "space people from other planets or other stars"? (Maybe he did -- if so, please provide a link.)

Jeremy, maybe you can show me some comments from Kucinich himself that justify your "nutjob" label -- on UFOs or anything else. Seriously, please defend calling him a "nutjob".

And Eric, just so you know, the plural of UFO is UFOs. The apostrophe is used to denote the possessive. (I would think that a journalist would know that. And are there any editors here?)

Excuse me for spouting off, but I'm really troubled by this. Can't we evaluate a candidate for president based on the merits of his positions? Do we ALL have to act like that dumbass Chris Matthews, who views politics the way a high school sophomore talks about girls?

C'mon people! We can do better. Especially at a place like this (that's why I come here for my news).

Based on what he says he'll do as president, and his demonstrated ability to speak truth to power now, I still support Dennis Kucinich for president. This UFO thing is a total non sequitor.

Actually, the UFO Question really pissed me off. Every person on that stage has done/said something off-the-wall in the past. They could have asked Obama about the homophobic preacher. How bout Edwards "..the greatest short-term threat to world peace, was the possibility that Israel would bomb Iran's nuclear facilities."
No, the establishment media were out to take Kucinich down a notch the cheapest and quickest way possible.

user-pic

Kucinich should be grateful for the attention. So he saw something unidentified in the sky. Big deal.

user-pic

"Can't we evaluate a candidate for president based on the merits of his positions?"

ROFLMAO. Seriously. Have you paid attention to politics in this country at all? The people without opinions, the undecided voters, vote for someone on the "I would like to have a beer with him" test, and things like flip-flopper or UFOnut or prissy expensive haricut guy, carry way more weight than substance. My personal favorite of all time was the guy NPR interviewed who was voting for Bush because Kerry "forgot Poland" in his list of the coallition of the willing, an affront to his Polish heritage (and presumably to the 4 troops they there at the time)....

user-pic

First off, Kucinich merely said it was Unidentified. He never talked of aliens, Jimmy! Second, people need to focus on the real issues on the upcoming election, not the bullshit, as The Onion would call it.

user-pic

dman, I'm glad I could brighten your day by making you roll on the floor and laugh your ass off. I appreciate the sarcastic tone, too.

Of course I pay attention to politics in this country. (That's why I'm reading TPM.) I know that most people don't pay any attention, and I fully expect the mainstream media to dumb it down to their level.

But I expect better than that from TPM. THAT'S MY POINT. Why is it okay for TPM to fall into the same trap, and re-inforce the "crazy" meme when it comes to Dennis Kucinich?

No, I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday. But thanks for asking.

Thanks for fixing the "UFO's" typo, Eric.

How did Kucinich good-naturedly saying something in the sky was unidentified get from there to this:

"But now Carter has told CNN that he does not at all believe the object he and about 25 other people saw — a round object that changed colors — was actually any sort of alien spaceship."

Kucinich didn't say it was an alien spaceship, either, merely that whatever he saw was not identified.

user-pic

I agree with the fact that Carter's statement is not a distancing from Kucinich. They both stated what they saw was literally "unidentified."

TPM feels like its diverted slightly from the previous no nonsense reporting that broke the US attorney scandal and highlighted the threat of social security privatization.

Maybe it's the expanding of the TPM staff due to recent growth. Headlines such as this one and others about the democratic candidates going for Hilary's blood are not up to par with the level of professionalism TPM is known for.

The reporter who ask the question should be called to task for asking an irrelevant and unprofessional question. Was the purpose of this question to embarrass and undermine Kucinich?

Personally, I don't know anything about Kucinich, I am simply responding to the poor quality of the reporters question.

I too saw a ufo, like a dim star that was going in a straight line. i thought for sure it was the MIR space station until it made that perfect 90 degree angle and continued off that way until fading in the distance.

even i concede its more likely im insane then there were aliens from other worlds flying overhead, yet like kucinich i am able to have a hot gf and function in life fairly well despite this insanity.

i suppose it could be worse, seeing stars that make right angles isnt maybe as bad as seeing wmd's where there arent any.

earlier this year people at ohare went crazy and fife symington went crazy and also the pilot bowyer who saw 2 seperate mile long ufos along with radar (radar can go crazy too very often, and at the same time as crazy pilots and crazy police who pass crazy polygraphs).

its crazy until the day we find out whatever it is, then its something else.

but that hasnt happened.

So, in the meantime if you see something for gods sake dont say anything to anyone, after all, that would be crazy.

You never know what might be going on. Some of these unusual topics seem to be worth looking into a bit.

Jimmy Carter bails on Dennis Kucinich just like he did the American people in his term as president.

user-pic

He said he saw an unidentified object, not a space ship. Now I understand how PRAVDA and Joseph Goebbels were such spectacular successes in the annals of history.

user-pic

The right wing fanatics are doing their level best to discredit Kucinich at every opportunity. The cheap shots and the treatment he gets from the press tells you he is a real threat to the Faciest adjenda... Keep poking them in the eye with your stick Dennis, you have growing support among the sane

user-pic

I am not going to comment on UFOs but the picture of Jimmy Carter used for this article is the worst I have ever seen. He looks like he has been sleeping on the streets of Atlanta.

user-pic

First off, why does someone need a position on UFOs? If you saw something odd and unexplainabe, that's what you saw. Tell the truth of what you remember, and your personal opinion of what it might be is secondary and should be labeled as such. What's truly odd, and a testament to the media's control of how & what we think as a society, is the way people are taught to treat the subject, with ridicule and laughter. I think that Carter must be smart enough to discern whether his "UFO" was a star, planet, aircraft, meteor, space debris, weather abberation, or whatever. And I don't think Carter is distancing himself from Kuchinich. He is clarifying his personal opinion, no more. Probably due to direct questioning about his sighting. If you recall, _Kuchinich never said he saw aliens._ He said he saw a craft of unknown origin. Stop the presses. No new news today.

Our horribly corrupt establishment feels threatened by representatives of civilizations that are thousdands of years more advanced than us. Think about it. Greed driven capitalism is not the answer. They pay farmers to destroy crop circles. The real crop circles are geometrically perfect.

Dennis NEVER SAID it was an alien spacecraft. A UFO could be an unidentified U.S. experimental project. Don't read more into Dennis's having seen a flying object he couldn't identify than what there was.

user-pic

I love the fact that Dennis Kucinich is so honest. No one wants to say that they've seen a UFO but I bet most people have.. I know I've seen a number of things in the sky that were unidentified by me.. And I'm sure many people have seen more unusual things.. what's the big deal? Well, the big deal is that most ignorant people translate UFO into - alien space craft - like the writer of this stupid article upstairs.. But really Dennis gets the last laugh in this. The media are just trying to portray Dennis as a whack job because he has guts.. Dennis is the only one running for president who has the balls to call a spade a spade.. to bring impeachment to the table.. to come up with a real plan for our health care system... a plan for Iraq.. etc..etc.. He's the only one with a clear track record. Meaning he hasn't changed his views just because he's running for President. How many candidates can you say that about? He is a true American - unfortunately when someone has the kind of bravery to stand up to a brainwashed society they are labeled a whack job.. And if that's what a whack job is then count me in as a whack job as well! Dennis has my support!

user-pic

I admire you, Jimmy, but shame on you for wimping out on this issue. I'll bet you have no problem believing in the resurrection of Christ and the Virgin Birth (and maybe even angels), but UFOs- no way, huh?

Ronald Reagan and Barry Goldwater also reported seeing UFOs. Thirty-four percent of Americans believe they're out there, and 14% believe they've seen one.

Good for you, Dennis, for being truthful, as always. I just became a temporary Democrat to vote for you in the primary.

user-pic

Actually, Carter is AGREEING with Kucinich, who also did not say anything at all about aliens. Way to go, media.
