Hillary Drops Mail In New Hampshire

A Dem source forwards us an utterly innocuous mailer about families and children that the Hillary campaign has dropped in New Hampshire:

Another less-than-controversial Hillary mailer about the American Dream after the jump.

Hillary's American Dream mailer:

hey where are the black adults? also where are the men? what a sexist

user-pic

Outside, very funny observation. What's even funnier is compare clinton II's mailer to mr. 9/11's. His doesn't have any women or minorities just white guys. Her's just have women and children. Too funny.

user-pic

They are in the pictures.

user-pic

That would only be funny, if the first and fifth mailer didn't feature African-American children; and the 2nd and 5th mailer didn't include elderly men.

user-pic

No mention of Iraq which says something about her commitment to peace. But then Hillary supporters don't really give a damn about the war, do they?

user-pic

Ver nice. Very high quality stuff. Why is her campaign asking for more money?
This stuff is not the product of anyone wanting for cash.

user-pic

cosabella, man, not men, I missed it, you have to look really, really hard. I take it you have no sense of humor, obviously, and if you can't see the over-all tone, you are blind. I am not criticizing the tone, that is where she wants to go, which is fine with me. It just seems like a sexist mailer to me, coming from someone complaining about alleged sexist treatment.

user-pic

Michael, please cite the time and place where Hillary complained about sexist treatment.

user-pic

Men haven't always done such a great job over the centuries!

user-pic

Oh, please, you guys have no sense of humor. Check out the posts on the thread concerning Ferraro's comments about the debate, which you know darn well weren't made without approval from on high. That's one thing the clinton machine does is control all communications. Also, the staffers posting on this site have been harping about the allegation left and right, you don't think that isn't being done based on a "talking points memo." Hello.

I was trying to point out the humor between Mr. 9/11's mailer and her mailer. Nobody see it? I guess not.

user-pic

Desider,

You are engaging in a level of disingenuousness comparable to Bush/Cheney saying "we never said Saddam was behind 9/11." Hillary says one thing in her public appearances but her campaign sends out quite the opposite message in its little "memos" to the press and through surrogates like her New York honorary chairman and official campaign spokesmen.

So, as usual, she's trying to have it both ways.

user-pic

Well, Michael, after all those wonderful years crunching our cocks into flight suits and screaming we're going to turn the Middle East into glass and going from "let's roll" to "mission accomplished to "please don't execute me" and that fantastic 2004 campaign where we got to relive Vietnam and Cambodia again, I must admit it's disappointing to see Hillary play the gender card with a bunch of wimmen. Wassup wid dat?

Anyway, Hillary channels Eleanor, and Ferraro channels Hillary. Was that the humor you were referring to?

user-pic

I guess you can't read desider. Too bad.

user-pic

What is it with these hillary-lovers? They are so bitter and nasty and no sense of humor. What ailes the group? I don't get it.

user-pic

Are we really going to get every mailer distributed via TPM-EC? Please, please tell me no, but if it must be, Edwards has one out just for Iowa that you ought to get from his campaign.

user-pic

Y'all, it's not a "2nd" and "5th" mailer. It's TWO mailers, which happen to each have more than one side.

The one I have in front of me as I type (I live in NH) has six pictures total. Two are of Hillary alone, the front cover and a letter saying that GWB is a failure; one is of an older lady about my age (58) and her reasons for supporting Hillary; one of her is with a gentleman (white) looking at what appear to be blueprints (the theme is blueprints), one is of Hillary with a young family (white) -- mom, dad, kid, and in-law plus a crowd; and another is of an African-American female researcher or lab type person (representing the 21st century I'm guessing, since we have a lot of biotech in NH & MA).

So, that doesn't look like the rest of America?

The impact of the mailers has to do with the goals that she lays out in them. Maybe you can't read them, but notice the bullets that highlight her "blueprint" for "the 21st century."

These honestly have to be the classiest literature I have ever received from any campaign, ever.

I also agree that they are not very controsversial, but that's fine by me.

user-pic

"Men haven't always done such a great job over the centuries!"

LOL. The understatement of the century...

user-pic

"These honestly have to be the classiest literature I have ever received from any campaign, ever."

Best. Mailers. Everrrrrr.

:-)
They're nice, but the enthusiasm is a little over the top. I guess if you're starved for positive things to say about a campaign. . . .

user-pic

Michael,

Didn't realize you wanted to be funny. Try a to surround it. Helps to announce a joke is coming. Black people in New Hampshire? Only 1% of the population. All the minority kids are overrepresented in the fliers. But there are a number of white men there, not to fear.

user-pic

"Men haven't always done such a great job over the centuries!"

Yeah. For example, men have been responsible for launching and supporting wars of aggression, basing their judgment on nothing more than conventional wisdom and ignoring other available evidence. Look at all the men that supported the invasion of Iraq without even reading the National Intelligence Estimate. Didn't they care enough about the Iraqi children that would be effected to even be bothered to read the NIE before voting for war and against several amendments that would have forced further diplomacy? Can you believe these MEN? . . . errrr. . . . wait a minute.

user-pic

First Clinton's corporate-sponsored campaign puts outta dog-pile memo 'bout the boys getting their icky snips and snails of truth all over Clinton's everything niceness and now Clinton is dropping the 'male' outta a whole state . . . This is just like when the man in wifeman got sliced off in the transition to Middle English . . . Are we supposed to start calling Clinton and over 50% of Americans "FEEs" . . . I mean come on here . . . I . . . Oh . . . Oops . . . Just re-read the article . . . I'm sooo embarassed . . .

user-pic

Forward into the good old days! The best of all Dem candidates except the ones who aren't running, and bound to be a better President than George Bush so what do you want? Wait until the 2nd term, then we'll see the real Hillary! Great campaigner, not such a good implementer. (Stop me if you've heard any of this about someone named Clinton before.) You were expecting something liberal, rubes?

user-pic

Oh, blind one desider, the point was look at mr. 9/11's mailer and its ALL white guys. Look at this mailer and its virtually ALL women and children, except for one white guy. I find that funny, if you don't oh well, that's life. You need to get out more and not be so bitter.

user-pic

I admired Hillary years ago for her advocacy for women and children, which was the theme of her personal work before she got into a wider arena about two decades ago. I can also understand why she is retreating to that theme to avoid today's truth: she has compromised her distant past's youthful ideals by joining the old boy's club of corporate DC elites, and now embodies all the baggage which that membership entails, including being the darling of the military industrialists, the health care lobbyists, and so forth.

user-pic

Wow, this is incredibly effective literature. It's interesting to whom she's addressing her message, and what she DOESN'T say.

The lit's almost all positive. Her fight is FOR the middle class, and not AGAINST anyone, though there's one brief shot at Bush. It's all about families and the middle class. There are few specifics. One piece uses direct address (e.g. "You're the backbone of our economy").

The tag line "Ready to Lead" is an implicit contrast with Obama and an implicit reference to her White House years -- although clearly she doesn't want to mention those years (or Bill) directly, since it might stir up bad memories for a few people.

She make take more corporate money than any other candidate, but she pushes the line that you (we) will no longer be "invisible" with her as president.

Her photos project steady resolve and compassion.

There's one adult male pictured in each flyer, whereas photos of women and children litter the pages. Unlike some commentators here, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but it is very revealing of her campaign's strategy. She's pretty much counting on women, and women alone, to push her to victory (although there is -- craftily -- no mention of either women or men in the text, just "children and families").

All in all two of the more effective mailers I've seen.

user-pic

DonnaG. Hillary's past advocacy for women is admirable, but her co-sponsorship of the "Workplace Religious Freedom Act" with Rick Santorum is counter to the interests of women. The bill would limit access to birth control by protecting pharmacists that refused to do their job from being fired.

user-pic
The bill would limit access to birth control by protecting pharmacists that refused to do their job from being fired.

Bush-Lite would betray both women and the Democratic Party just to cover her political backside.

Today 268 Iowa Republicans announced that they will caucus for Senator Barack Obama and 68 New Hampshire Republicans announced that they had changed their party registration to vote for Barack Obama in the primary, saying he is the only candidate in either party who can break through the gridlock in Washington because he has a proven record of bringing Republicans and Democrats together to solve problems. In Illinois, Obama bridged the partisan divide to extend health care to 150,000 Illinois families, pass a $100 million tax cut for working families and enact historic ethics reform.

“With all of the challenges our country faces, we cannot elect a President who will go to Washington and just get bogged down by the same partisan gridlock,” Brett Blix said. “That’s why I’m supporting Senator Obama even though I’m a Republican. He’s the only candidate in either party with a record of bringing Republicans and Democrats together to solve problems, and he will always tell you where he stands even when you disagree. There are thousands of disaffected Republicans like me who are disappointed by President Bush and the Republican presidential candidates who would consider voting for a Democrat who can bring about change we can believe in.”

Brett Blix is 30-year-old Iraq war veteran from Northwood, Iowa. He recently switched his party registration so that he can caucus for Senator Obama.

“I’ve been a Republican all my life, but the challenges we face are too great to choose a candidate based on his party—we need to the choose the candidate who can bring fundamental change to Washington and start getting things done again,” Jerry Spivak said. “Barack Obama is the only candidate who will be able to break the partisan logjam and inspire Americans to come together around real solutions.”

Jerry Spivak is a 57-year-old engineer from Nashua, New Hampshire. He recently switched his party registration so that he can vote for Senator Obama in the primary.

This public support from Republicans is yet another sign of Senator Obama’s crossover appeal. Previously, Obama received third place in a poll of Republican Iowa caucus goers – receiving more support from Republicans than Mike Huckabee, John McCain and Sam Brownback combined.

“I’ve always believed that you can only bring about real change when people come together across party lines, and I’ve seen what happens when folks put politics aside and get down to work,” Senator Obama said. “If you can’t bring people together across the old fault lines, you simply aren’t going to be able to make progress on the challenges we face.”

What is the point of this? A political campaign is sending out feel-good flyers? Can someone explain why this is newsworthy?

user-pic

Not sure what you mean by "newsworthy"?

This block is called TPM Election Central. It deals with election news. As you might have heard, we are in the middle of a Presidential election. Therefore, the activities of the Presidential candidates is pretty standard fare for this blog.

The mailings that the candidates are doing in New Hampshire and Iowa are interesting to those of us in other states because we wouldn't normally get to see them. The topics and presentation of these pieces tells us a lot about each candidate's strategies.

For example, I'm willing to bet that different voters got the two Clinton pieces above. They are probably part of a modern "microtargeted" campaign.

user-pic

Michael,

At least 2 white guys by my count (2 white couples, basically), and I can't tell on one other. In any case, I don't know what your point is. Humorous that the 1st serious female candidate would use women & children to highlight women's and children's issues, vs. Giuliani who wants to be Mr. 9/11 24x7? I'm sure there's a joke there, but really, spell it out - I think someone switched me onto decaf without me knowing. (Perhaps Rudy should put out a flyer of ex-girlfriends and wives from the mansion to express his softer side).

user-pic

desider, you hillary-lovers are way too serious. By the way, why don't you divert that energy and agression to figure out what her positions are as opposed to constantly slinging the fluff on the one hand and the bitter and nasty diatribes on the other. Again, if you can't see the different tones, too bad. I am sure that you never watch the daily show.

Your point on the ex-girlfriends and wives was funny, see, you can do it and it would have been funny if you didn't have the bitter lead in. That kind of ruined the joke.

user-pic

"Bitter and nasty"? Oh, my friend, you have no idea. There are 3 more gears where that one comes from.

And you may find this hard to believe, but I'm not a "Hillary lover" - I simply don't want another Republican administration, and it seems like only 1 candidate realizes the nasty shit they're up against.

user-pic

I'm sorry, I should have given Chris Dodd and perhaps Bill Richardson credit in the "being serious about the real opposition" category.

user-pic

Gee, hwc, condescend much? Do you really think we are going to be treated to every single mailer every single campaign ever sends out?
My point is, the lede is so buried here that I can't find it -- is there an argument being made by Greg Sargent here? Is innocuous bad? Is this an example of "playing the gender card"? Sorry, but even in an election-focused area, any given campaign mailer posted without comment doesn't rise to the level of newsworthy. If there's a reason for posting this one, say so.

user-pic

Bush-Lite unites the republican base.
