GOP Spending Money On Safe Seat Special Election

The National Republican Congressional Committee isn't taking anything for granted in an upcoming special election in Virginia, even though the district itself is heavily Republican. Roll Call reports that the NRCC is spending about $39,000 to attack the Democratic candidate, Iraq War veteran Philip Forgit, and about $3,100 on phone banking to get out the vote for Republican state Delegate Rob Wittman.

The First Congressional District went for President Bush with 60% of the vote in 2004, and gave George Allen 54% of the vote in 2006. It was vacated by the death of Congresswoman Jo Ann Davis. The special election will be held December 11.

Wow it would awesome if Dems merely force the GOP to break a sweat here. Don't forget that there is also OH-05 voting on the same, and that many see that one as even more promising given how divisive the GOP primary was. $42,000? Wow. Gone are the glory days when the Repub party could afford to spend a cool $1 million and fly in 100 paid staffers in off-year special elections for a safe seats. The DCCC ought to go drop a $100k or so on this race just to be mean.

On second thought, guess maybe that might not actually be the smartest thing in terms of the expectations game, since the Republican would still be likely to win it. But still, I think they could as high as matching every dollar national Republicans spend -- out of petty cash these days, sounds like -- without really pumping up expectations for the Democrat unrealistically. It would be fun.
