Gilmore Declares In Virginia Senate Race

Republicans now have a declared candidate for the seat of retiring Senator John Warner (R-VA) — but it might not do them much good. Former Governor Jim Gilmore, who ran for president earlier this year and dropped out due to poor poll numbers and fundraising, has declared his candidacy.

However, the Democrats are heavily favored to pick up the seat. Polling has consistently shown former Governor Mark Warner (D), Gilmore's successor, leading by a wide margin.

Mark my words: Gilmore will win this seat, and the GOP will regain control of at least one House of Congress.

Unless clinton II is the nominee, then all bets are off.

Jake D, aren't you the same person who says the GOP will win Nancy Pelosi's House seat? You're track record on predictions is not going to look good next November.

I am, in fact, assuming that Clinton II will be the nominee -- the GOP will therefore regain control of at least one House of Congress down the ticket -- I think they will retain the White House as well.

Marc:

Yes, I am -- we will see who is right in November -- you don't think Cindy Sheehan will have much of an impact in that particular race?

Jake D. I'll have whatever you're smoking cause baby that stuff is a powerful hallucinogen. Gilmore has exactly this much chance of beating Warner for the VA Senate....ZIP. He was a disaster as VA Governor and a disaster as head of the RNC. He's running because no sane thug party member wants to face Warner.

Jake D,
The idea that Hillary Clinton somehow will be a drag on the ticket is a grave, grave misconception. Check out this NYT piece where Senator Clinton confronts the polarizing issue and she does it magnificently.

Besides, as the VA Senate race goes, and as phil james correctly hints, Mark Warner can start writing his victory speech. It’s not like he’s going to have to campaign a lot to win this anyhow.

This race is over. Gilmore's candidacy gives the Democrats a clear and easy comparison between records. The "Hillary Drag" isn't going to make up a 20 point deficit.

gee, demac, so clinton II says she isn't a drag and we are just suppose to buy it, hook, line and sinker. You blind clinton II lovers just crack me up. Virtually every dem in a leadership position is publically and privately seriously concerned about the drag of a clinton II nominee and there is evidence for it, but since whatever her majesty says is gospel, I guess everyone else is just dead wrong.

Andy, don't underestimate the impact of a clinton II nomination on other dem races. What would be a walk away for warner, could wind up being a dog fight if she is the nominee.
