Did Robertson Really "Explain" 9/11 Comments, As Rudy Claimed?

As noted below, Rudy has now defended accepting Pat Robertson's endorsement by saying that Robertson some time ago "explained" his controversial comments, in which he agreed with Jerry Falwell that America "deserved" to be attacked on 9/11.

Rudy's suggestion is that Robertson somehow admitted that this was a verbal screw-up that he's now repudiated.

But what, exactly, was Robertson's "explanation"? Did Robertson really explain anything, as Rudy claimed? Not by our reckoning -- in fact, Robertson has since stuck by the fundamental point that caused the controversy.

The press release Robertson put out in September of 2001 explaining the comment is here. Here's a key excerpt:

Rev. Falwell’s initial remarks were completely in accord with what had been said in preceding parts of the program, and then, unexpectedly, he uttered a political statement of blame directed at certain segments of the population that was severe and harsh in tone, and, frankly, not fully understood by the three hosts of The 700 Club who were watching Rev. Falwell on a monitor...

Rev. Falwell has issued a pointed clarification of his statement, and Dr. Robertson said on Fox News’ The Edge that he considered the remarks "totally inappropriate." He does not wish to comment further...

It's very clear here that what Robertson was describing as "totally inappropriate" was the second part of Falwell's remarks -- the assertion that various specific groups bent on secularizing America, such as abortionists and gays, had brought 9/11 upon us. But I'm still finding no evidence at all that Robertson ever repudiated the fundamental underlying point Falwell was making, and that Robertson agreed with: Chiefly, that America's iniquities in general are the reason 9/11 happened, because God lifted his protection from us.

Indeed, Robertson's original press release making this point is still on his Web site, with no repudiation of it. What's more, Robertson actually made a very similar suggestion as late as 2005:

We have killed over 40 million unborn babies in America. I was reading, yesterday, a book that was very interesting about what God has to say in the Old Testament about those who shed innocent blood. And he used the term that those who do this, "the land will vomit you out." That -- you look at your -- you look at the book of Leviticus and see what it says there.

And this author of this said, "well 'vomit out' means you are not able to defend yourself." But have we found we are unable somehow to defend ourselves against some of the attacks that are coming against us, either by terrorists or now by natural disaster? Could they be connected in some way?

So very clearly, Robertson was still suggesting as late as 2005 that American sins such as abortion lead God to lift his protection of us against terrorism -- in other words, that they are to blame for terrorism. It's hard to see what else this could be a reference to other than 9/11.

So Rudy's suggestion that Robertson has satisfactorily backed off the crux of his 9/11 comments just doesn't wash.

By my "accounting" (as a Christian Conservative) Robertson has indeed explained -- see "The Bible" for any more explanation you need.

does the Bible say anything about 9/11?

Despite his "apology", that kind of talk saddled Falwell with being reincarnated in the distant past as an extinct carnivorous flightless bird.

So we can only hope that whatever gods or mechanism that are watching over Pat and Rudy will, in their cases, concur.

If, in fact, Pat Robertson has taken back his remarks about America "deserving" 9/11, he has kept that "fact" a well-guarded SECRET from the rest of us.

I would like to hear Pat Robertson state PUBLICLY he REPUDIATES his remarks that America "deserved" 9/11 and that God had abandoned us because of our bad behavior -- actually, the behavior of groups Robertson condemns but Jesus embraced by saying, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." Jesus was, at that moment protecting an accused adulteress.

Please let us all know if you EVER hear Pat Robertson PUBLICLY REPUDIATE his accusations.

Well, Robertson not only made those absurd comment about 9/11, he also publicly proposed to assasinate Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela. Does Rudy agrees with that too?

Maybe Pat knows that endorsing Rudy will bring on the Rapture. Since Rudy loves teh ghey, adultery, and killing firefighters, we'd obviously be in for some big time God-punishment if he actually wins.

Pat Robertson says: "Elect Rudy, so God has an excuse to destroy San Francisco!"

Please excuse me, cabin attendant, I need a motion discomfort bag.

Thank you

I hope Rudy has a supply of condoms because Pat slept with Mobutu, with Charles Taylor and Efrain Rios-Montt before climbing between the sheets with him.

This guy is on TV constantly. If his so-called apology did not occur on TV, then it might as well not have happened.

Bogus press releases don't mean spit.

Jake D., you should ask Rudy and other leaders if they agree with you and Robertson that God sent the terrorists to punish Americans for their sins.

Please, please, please ask them for us. Don't be deterred if you fail initially. Keep trying until you succeed. Follow them around Iowa or New Hampshire or South Carolina. You can do it!

"see The Bible for any more explanation you need"

Yes, the Bible is a greatest fictional book of all time. I'm sure if I need any more explanation to cover up all the horse dung that comes from your daily postings that'll be the place where it all makes sense.

Just keep believing that you're actually a christian conservative rather than a brainwashed follower who will defend the greatest ills that only these rich people benefit from. These people treat religion as if it were for sale, infomercial after painful infomercial, but only to those who pay the piper. And if it were possible that the spirit of Jesus exists,.....he would most likely be ashamed of you for your daily defenses of these people who only benefit from the weak.

Don't you belong somewhere else? I don't mean to be rude but you're postings are bit out of place in this forum. They rarely make a relevant argument...

Hey, Tekel: What the heck is "teh ghey"?

Funny how religious nuts never notice that the Netherlands, with both legal prostitution and drug use, has not been hit by terrorists.

user-pic

Pro life until the children are born then they become cannon fodder. AMEN

user-pic

The Netherlands also has the lowest rate of abortion. Hmmm...
Guiltless sex with condoms actually does keep pregnancy from occuring. That must be why the Christian nutjobs fear it. They hate having fun!
