Brownback To Endorse McCain

Sam Brownback, the staunchly conservative Senator who exited the presidential race a few weeks ago, will reportedly endorse John McCain for president.

Brownback had battled with Mike Huckabee for Christian right support in Iowa, but ultimately had to drop out due to poor fundraising and an inability to get any traction after Huckabee beat him for second place in the Iowa Straw Poll.

I really think McCain has an excellent chance at getting the nomination. This reminds me of 1996: the GOP flirted with a lot of other people, but came back to their most credible candidate (Dole) in the end.

A new USA Today/Gallup poll out this morning has Clinton comfortably ahead in the general election against Rudy.

A six point lead one year before the actual election is not exactly what I would call comfortable.

Heck, Dukakis had a 12-13 point lead going into the summer of 1988 and a 17 point lead after the Democratic convention. The problem is that his lead was built more on Bush I's unpopularity than his own popularity (the polls showing Dukakis with a 17-point lead were 51-34 and 50-33 respectively). So when Bush ran a successful negative campaign against Dukakis, that lead vanished and Bush won an easy electoral vote victory (with 53.4 to 45.6 in the popular vote).
