Thompson Discusses Daughter's Death, Criticizes Government On Schiavo

Fred Thompson has previously criticized the government's involvement in the Terri Schiavo case, and he has now elaborated on the subject: He's had his own tragic experience, with the death of his 38-year old daughter in 2002.

"I had to make those decisions with the rest of my family," said Thompson. "And I will assure you one thing: No matter which decision you make, you will never know whether or not you made exactly the right decision."

Talking to a reporter in Florida, Thompson was harshly critical of the political decisions made in the case, saying that there should not be a role for any level of government beyond the judiciary's authority to adjudicate disputes.

Thompson added that "making this into a political football is something that I don't welcome, and this will probably be the last time I ever address it. It should be decided by the family. The federal government — and the state government too, except for the court system — should stay out of these matters, as far as I'm concerned."

Given the number of times the Republican candidates accused each other of being Hillary Clinton at the debate yesterday, expect Rudy and Mitt to come out with statements about how this aligns Thompson with the Clintons of the world!

Thompson seems to be center-right on social issues.

Jewliani is liberal. Mitt was liberal and is now uber-conservative.. the rest of just right wing freaks.

the odd problem is that the top 3 republicans are Jewliani, Romney, and Thompson which must have the christian right scratching their heads having to choose. i think they are too dumb to realize it though. if they wisen up my darkhorse is Huckabee, especially since Iowa republicans are as right wing as they come...

Jewliani??? Seriously? You are a ridiculous human being.

Regardless of who wins the Republican nomination, Huckabee is a cinch for the VP spot.

BTW, demwinger, Rudy's last name is spelled Guiliani. And since he is Catholic, the only reason I can think of for your incorrect spelling is sheer ignorance. Unbecoming of a TPM post.

Well good for Thompson for telling it like it is in this case. It is the first time I've ever heard him say anything intelligent--and that includes the Watergate Hearings.

Every other major candidate for President in both parties ought to join Thompson in this. Anyone who has ever faced such a decision understands very well how utterly inappropriate it is for the government to be involved in any way. Even the courts have an extraordinarily limited proper role in these matters.

In every other respect I think Thompson has shown himself to be pretty much of a doof, but on this I say let's give credit where credit is due.

I think this is strike three for Thompson with the Christian Right.

Is it possible to debate politics without resorting to bigotry? What is with the "Jewliani" comment? Perhaps you thought you were posting to Rush Limbaugh's website. Take your insults somewhere else, please.

Jewliani is no good. The appropriate, ethnically derogatory way to refer to Rudy is "Il Duce."

This is the first sensible thing I've heard out of Thompson's campaign.

It does make me wonder, however, how someone who'd confronted a similar situation could possibly claim he was not familiar with the Terri Schiavo case. He had to have been lying.
