Report: McCain Nearly Quit Race In July
This can't be the kind of story that John McCain wants out there. In a new GQ write-up on how the one-time frontrunner's campaign fell into the doldrums, a source says that McCain almost dropped out of the race back in early July.
"As [longtime McCain aide Mark] Salter later confided to a top adviser, McCain was ready to quit the campaign then and there," the article alleges. "Salter talked him down as well."
At that point, the campaign was taking a lot of heat over fundraising problems, Iraq-related gaffes, and the failure of the immigration bill.

Wow! I like McCain because of his honesty and service, obviously, I disagree with him on Iraq and many other issues. Poor fella!
I think that it was a good think that he didn't drop out, otherwise Rudy would have taken a hold on the field.
Rudy would be a nightmare for us and for the country.

I think the 08 Republican field has more similarities to the 04 Dems than do the Dems right now**, and McCain is the 08 Republican John Kerry. I can see Giuliani imploding ala Dean, Romney going down ala Gephardt trying to take Giuliani down, and McCain, the seasoned veteran (in more ways than one) coming up and taking over.
** (not that I don't think Hillary may end up loosing, just not in the same way as Dean)

Honesty???
McCain visited a market in Baghdad wearing a bullet proof vest, guarded by 100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead. In a press conference afterward he claimed that his stroll was proof that you could walk freely through some areas of Baghdad.
If that's McCain's idea of the truth, I'd hate to hear one of his lies.

So I suppose the "no surrender" tour should be renamed the "surrender unless my advisors tell me otherwise" tour.
This is deadly news for McCain coupled with his non-existant cash on hand after debts, and the revelation that he inflated his quarterly numbers at the end of last month, when in fact Ron Paul outraised McCain for primary dollars in Q3 (5.3 million to 4.9 million).

Good lord the Republican field is such a clusterf**k. If if if McCain hadn't embraced Bush and had kept his dignity and image of honesty intact, he'd be the man.
My Republican friends (who are all hugely demoralized) don't even have anyone they can shrug about.
And with Merle Haggard endorsing Clinton, well, what more is there to say? Except, do I want to vote for someone endorsed by Merle Haggard? No.

McCain should just bite the bullet and take public financing. He would get a fresh inflow of cash just like John Edwards did. It would leave him with plenty of money to contest what looks like will be a short primary contest that ends in early February.
McCain and Edwards are in the same position. If they run short of money or are up against state spending limits after that then they can contend with it then. If they do not make an impact in the early states, their campaigns are dead.
I would have to see verification that Merle Haggard actually endorsed Hilary Clinton before I believe it. Not beyond the realm of possibility.
Incidently, when all was said and done, McCain did outraise Ron Paul in the third quarter though not by much.

This is ridiculous. McCain is going nowhere, and now we find out that even -he- knows it. He's wasting time and money. Doesn't he have a job to do in the senate?
