Obama Compares Hillary To Bush?

Barack Obama, on Jay Leno's show last night, had this to say about Hillary's inevitability:

"Hillary is not the first politician in Washington to declare 'Mission Accomplished' a little too soon."

The question, of course, is whether Hillary has ever actually said that she's won the race, whatever efforts to create the impression of inevitability Camp Hillary is or isn't making. Either way, the Obama campaign is clearly proud of the quote, and indeed sent it out in a fundraising email this morning.

Meanwhile, Ben Smith has some fun extending the analogy between proclamations of Hillary's inevitability and Bush's declaration that the war was over. Obama's full email touting the quote is after the jump.

Hey,

I'm leaving the Tonight Show studio and I wanted to share something.

Jay Leno just asked if it bothers me that some of the Washington pundits are declaring Hillary Clinton the winner of this election before a single vote has been cast.

I'll tell you what I told him: Hillary is not the first politician in Washington to declare "Mission Accomplished" a little too soon.

We started this week $2.1 million behind the Clinton campaign -- a lead they built in large part with contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs.

We don't accept money from federal lobbyists or PACs. But we've already cut that advantage in half with small donations from people like you.

Let's close the rest of that gap now. Please make a donation of $25:

Thank you,

Barack

Obama is going to lose badly if he continues to lump Hillary together with Republicans. He did it with Giuliani two days ago, and now this... and there have been other examples, of course.

I don't want Karl Rove style attack politics to determine the nominee. Obama needs to define himself as the superior alternative without trying to paint the very liberal junior Senator from NY as a Republican.

Greg:

Actually the question isn't whether HRC has made this comment directly, the question is whether her campaign is pushing this meme of inevitability. She's obviously not going to do anything to ACTIVELY dissuade you and others from pushing this meme, but her campaign continues to push it. I recall articles about how McAuliffe was saying this race was all but over.

So to the extent her campaign is pushing the inevitability meme, then it is fair to say SHE is pushing the inevitability meme. I mean, if "I" means "my administration", surely it's not a stretch to say that "she" equals "her campaign".

Wow ! what the fugg is happening to Obama?

Here's a link to the interview on the Tonight Show.

The last time Obama did this, Hillary had a very recognizable increase in the polls. Interesting choice of strategy. Not only did it fail miserably last time, but it builds bad blood if he happens to win the nomination and will need Hillary volunteers.

The question, of course, is whether Greg Sargent actually has a sense of humor.

user-pic

Geez, you Hillariods are touchy bunch.

user-pic

Greg, it's a joke. Lighten up. You don't have to parse it. Of course Hillary hasn't literally declared Mission Accomplished yet, but the joke is that her campaign has pretty much done everything but that.

Mark, despite what Rush Limbaugh says, Hillary is not very liberal. That's just wrong. Look at her foreign policy for starters.

gqm, where are the numbers and what was the last time?

The MSM has been begging Obama to attack Hillary for months and months, so they must be relishing this fight. I can't imagine how nuts Chris Matthews is going.

Obama has built a movement that will follow him regardless of how he campaigns against Hillary now. I wonder how the undecided Iowa caucus-goers will respond. They make up their minds late.

Thanks for the link Anonymous...I had missed it...that was a very good interview.

I especially liked when Leno asked Barack if he was sure he wanted to leave his wife alone with Bill....that quip was priceless. I'd liked Obama's reply as well.

Keith...great post...ITA!!!

Obama has a bad case of the snides. He portrays himself initially as a uniter not a divider (gee, where did I get that -- two can play this game) but when that doesn't work he starts making snide comments and claiming they are jokes.

Last time he had to actually debate issues he came off poorly. They claim it was flu. I think it was nerves.

Translation:

It's unfortunate that Senator Obama is abandoning the politics of hope.

Jane, it WAS a joke. I'm sorry that your sense of humor is absent this morning.

When Leno tried to make a joke in poor taste about Bill Clinton, Obama did not bite.

It doesn't surprise me to see such a blatantly biased post on TPMEC, as it's become standard operating procedure. Why do you feel the need to mischaracterize the event? We can all watch the video and see just how low you'll stoop to ensure HRC gets the nom...

user-pic

Oh Greg, another day, another post and crazy headline to make Obama look bad. Hillary sure gets your gollies up by the look of things.

TPM has really gone off the deep end.

user-pic

I agree with you, Greg. It's outrageous to use this incident to compare Hillary to George. Especially when there are so many worthier comparisons, like foreign policy, the war in Iraq, socialized medicine, torture, the economy--not to mention their mutual lust for power and political ruthlessness. Shame on Obama for making such a shallow comparison on that paragon of social commentary, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

user-pic

The problem is that it's a fundamentally misleading joke. Leno asks about "pundits" declaring Hillary the winner and Obama responds by accusing Hillary of declaring herself the winner - something she obviously hasn't done.

It's weird. Obama is making the same mistake innumerable politicians have made about the Clintons. So much mud has been slung that it's easy to sling more and get it to stick. That is, until the Clintons show up. Hillary's negatives are high because of rhetoric like Obama is engaging in. But when people actually meet Hillary, her negatives fall. Obama is actually participating in the cycle that ultimately benefits Hillary,

And first him bragging about how he could "take" Hillary and now his bizarro world claim that his wife could beat Bill Clinton in a debate? I don't know what this joker is smoking, but keep him away from the White House. He's not only stupid (for a Democratic senator, that is), he's downright delusional.

All HRC supporters:

It's pretty damn simple. Her campaign has been making this inevitability argument for the last few months. So much so that one can't turn around without hearing it on the news, reading it in print, or having it crammed down your throats on blogs. And let's not get started with the comments on this and other blogs.

If you are willing to accept that when HRC says "I" she means "my administration", then surely you understand that "her campaign" also means "her". Thus, she has been making this inevitability argument for the last few months.

And if she's been making this argument for the last few months, his comment was directly on point.

Do me a favor and spare me your faux outrage.

user-pic

Wholly crap, Greg and followers. This was a joke -- on the Jay Leno show. This was not a personal attack on Hillary. Hillary's supporters seem so thin skinned, that they react to something as fun and light as this as if it were Obama accusing Hillary of killing Vincent Foster. Lighten up everyone. It is Obama's job to try to deflate the meme that Hillary is already the winner, and in a handful of words he got the point across very well and very efficiently. The quote is being picked up everywhere. If he did not do something like this, Greg and others would be saying, "That Barack Obama is so nice that he can't be effective when he's up against those nasty Republicans."

Guess what Hillary defenders, Obama struck just the right chord with this comment. No one not joined at the hip to Hillary's campaign thought the remark was nasty; they all thought it was funny and pithy.
