New McCain Ad Uses "Tied Up" Joke
John McCain's new ad, which uses footage from last week's Republican debate, seems tailor-made for its New Hampshire audience. It combines his military credentials with his anti-pork record — and it rips on hippies and Hillary Clinton, too:

Isn't some big GOP honcho the driving force behind the Woodstock Museum?
I wonder what % of viewers will catch the tied up joke.

Yes. The head of Cablevision, Inc. invested most of the $70 million cost of the Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center. The state of New York kicked in $15 million. The town of Bethel kicked in sewer infratstructure.
The absolutely gorgeous 16,000 seat outdoor performing arts center is build on the site of the Woodstock Festival about 90 miles from NYC. It opened last summer. It is a new summer home of the New York Philharmonic.

So much evidence that McCain is now the strongest g-e contender for the GOP. Like today's that has him polling way better than Rudy.

I note that McCain faile to point out he and his ilk have been holding America hostage for the last seven or so years now.

Hate to admit it, but it's a terriffic ad. It's absurd that an ad like this should be well received, but I think it will be, because it is good on its own (depressingly shallow) terms, and it's tactically smart, because it will generate free media for McCain. It might come off as a more transparent cheap shot, if McCain were not a longstanding opponent of earmarks and special projects, but he is such an opponent, so it probably won't play as a transparent cheap shot.
By the way, the ad underscores Obama's point, which he's been making for several months, that it's not good for the Dems to get caught up in the cultural battles from the 1960s. Somehow our side lost one such battle in 2004 even when we had the war hero and they had the shirker, because our guy of course protested that war.
It's absurd that this will work, but it will.

Bob, I think the voters of NH are smart enough to get the "tied up" reference -- especially since there is a visual aid, video footage from McCain's time at the Hanoi Hilton and since McCain has been running a serious biographical ad in NH explaining his POW status in North Vietnam and using the same video footage.

Great going, John. You've just lost the all the young voters. You know, people under 70.

I have to agree with madhaus who posted above me.
I'm a college professor here in New Hampshire. The kids in this state are big-time partiers, not future military recruits. I do not know a single college student who plans on voting for any Republican, with the exception of Ron Paul.
This ad may or not connect with the adults (most of us lean very libertarian, not Republican), but my students all already think the Republicans are nothing but a bunch of uptight old farts. I actually think this ad would probably play a lot better for McCain in South Carolina than here.
Just my view from New Hampshire.

I am a young person, and I can only speak for myself. I have no plans to vote for John McCain or any Republican, but on this point he's right. Something must be done about the hippies.

The best part of that advertisement is the guffawing Rudy. An interesting choice to use largely positive images of your top competition.
