Kucinich Had A UFO Encounter, According To Friend Shirley MacLaine
In Shirley MacLaine's new book, the actress and longtime friend of Dennis Kucinich makes an interesting claim: During a visit to her home in Washington state, Kucinich said he saw a UFO and heard messages from it.
"Dennis found his encounter extremely moving," MacLaine writes. "The smell of roses drew him out to my balcony where, when he looked up, he saw a gigantic triangular craft, silent, and observing him.
"It hovered, soundless, for 10 minutes or so, and sped away with a speed he couldn't comprehend. He said he felt a connection in his heart and heard directions in his mind."
Kucinich's campaign and Congressional offices did not return calls or e-mails from the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Perhaps Denis was sexually abused as a child. Many UFO abductions/encounters are traced back to that kind of childhood trauma.
Rudy Giuliani might shed light on this, seeing as he employs an accused pedophile priest.

Who hasn't seen a UFO? I saw several. It might have been experimental aircraft from an airbase near by, but I saw them none the less. And others saw them too.
Kucinich is acknowledging there might be something more than just us. So what? Religious people do that every Sunday in church.
It sounds like Dennis had a spiritual experience. He doesn't have to explain it to anyone, as long as he doesn't use it an excuse to start wars in God's name.

The Phoenix Lights proved beyond all reasonable doubt that UFOs exist. But instead of having intelligent discussions about why these UFOs made such a noticeable tour over Phoenix and Arizona in 1997, Americans are still at the most simplistic of discussions. They were in the sky. No they weren't. Thousands saw them. No they didn't. Ugh. And we think we are the ones made in God's image. Not unless God is superstitious and afraid to acknowledge things that threaten his self image.

I don't care what the source of Kucinich's inspiration might be, he's the only presidential candidate talking plainly and sanely about our country's direction. His platform, boiled down, is: Stop using war and military force as instruments of national policy and start orienting our actions toward peace and disarmament; put human needs -- health care, education, jobs, environmental protection -- at the top of our domestic agenda.
Maybe his personal world's a little kooky, but it's sure a lot less destructive than the self-interests and self-delusions of whoever is going to end up as president.

It's easy for Kucinich to say he puts "human needs -- health care, education, jobs, environmental protection -- at the top of our domestic agenda." He never gives specific deails on how he will do this--and he doesn't have to; he never intends to be elected.
It isn't enough to have good intentions, Kucinich was Mayor of Cleveland when it was the "mistake on the lake." How he made it to Congress, I'll never understand. We don't need another incompetent President.

I used to live near Shirley's neighborhood, and Dennis' vision of a UFO was probably caused by fumes from a local meth lab. At the time (a few years ago) there was a massive meth epidemic in the area. Our local Radio Shack led all Radio Shacks in the nation in the sale of lithium batteries.

I have to chime in with my disappointment in TPM. Eric's story (above) is fine. And a link from the main blog, without a lot of snark would be fine, too. But the column inches, and the attitude, seem excessive.
Does anyone remember the 2000 election? The mainstream media adopted a "script" about the candidates. In particular, the script for Al Gore was that he was a serial exaggerator -- inspiration for Love Story, the man who found Love Canal, the inventor of the internet, etc.. Every single one of those incidents has been de-bunked and explained, but the damage was done (and most people, to this day, have never heard the de-bunking).
I wasn't reading TPM back then, but did this blog participate in spreading those un-truths? Did TPM fall into the trap of labeling Gore as an exaggerator, and taking cheap jabs at him just for giggles? I seriously doubt it.
So why go down that road now? The MSM "script" for Kucinich is that he's a kook. Why feed that notion? And why delight in it so much?? C'mon, TPM, I expect a little better from you.
If the facts are really there to support the story, then find those facts and tell us. But consider the sources for this story -- Shirley MacClaine (as in surely you must be joking), and the CPD, which has a history with Mr. Kucinich already. Where is your normal level of skepticism? Why do you feel compelled to let it validate the MSM script so quickly??
Last week you all treated Ron Paul in the same dismissive way, regarding his so-called "unibomber" note to his supporters. I was disappointed then, as well.
You can do better, and you normally do.
Thanks for listening.

UFO's are, by definition, change, and point to realities of much more breadth and scope -- potential and expansiveness. It gets no easier to maintain a façade of normalcy for the cowardly denial of a niggardly few.
So, I'd seek my own questions though the answers offend me, shock me, or shame me. In the first place it's not always offense, shock, and shame. In the second, there is joy beyond the shame, satisfaction beyond the shock, and fellowship beyond the offense.
It's all good, just like Kucinich.

Reagan saw UFOs several times. Here's the first story:
Ronald Reagan’s daughter Patti Davis described her father as "fascinated with stories about unidentified flying objects and the possibility of life on other worlds." She compared the "madness" of her father’s inauguration day to "a fifty’s movie in which flying saucers descend on the metropolis."
Reagan may have gained this intense interest from sightings he had while he was Governor of California. Kitty Kelly in her Unauthorized Biography of Nancy Reagan stated Reagan admitted to believing in flying saucers, and "even swore that he had seen a few unidentified flying objects."
Two of these Reagan UFO encounters have become public. The first sighting story was made public by Steve Allen on his WNEW-AM radio show in New York. Allen stated that a well know personality in the entertainment industry had confided a UFO story to him many years before. As the story had already made the rounds in the rumor mill, there was no question the comedian and host was referring to Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy.
Ron and Nancy were expected at a casual dinner party with friends in Hollywood. Except for the Reagans, all the guests had arrived. Ron and Nancy showed up a half hour later quite upset. They stated that they had seen a UFO coming down the coast.
Lucille Ball in her book "Lucy in the Afternoon" also described the event. In her account of the event she stated, “After he elected President, I kept thinking about that event, and wondered if he still would have won if he told everyone that he saw a flying saucer.”

Here's the second Regan UFO story:
man C. Millar, then Washington Bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal, later the editor of the Los Angeles Times. Reagan told Millar:
"I was in a plane last week when I looked out the window and saw this white light. It was zigzagging around. I went up to the pilot and said, ‘Have you seen anything like that before?’ He was shocked and said, ‘Nope.’ And I said to him: ‘Let’s follow it!’
We followed it for several minutes. It was a bright white light. We followed it to Bakersfield, and all of a sudden to our utter amazement it went straight up into the heavens. When we got off the plane, I told Nancy all about it.’
The pilot of Governor Reagan plane was Bill Paynter, and he backed up Reagan’s version of the incident with the UFO.
I was the pilot of the plane when we saw the UFO. Also, on board were Governor Reagan and a couple of his security people. We were flying a Cessna Citation. It was maybe nine or ten o’clock at night. We were near Bakersfield when Governor Reagan and the others called my attention to a big light flying a bit behind the plane.
It appeared to be several hundred yards away. It was a fairly steady light until it began to accelerate, then it appeared to elongate. The light took off. It went up at a 45-degree angle - at a high rate of speed. Everyone on the plane was surprised.
Governor Reagan expressed amazement. I told the others I didn’t know what it was. The UFO went from a normal cruise speed to a fantastic speed instantly. If you give an airplane power it will accelerate - but not like a hotrod, and that is what this was like.
We didn’t file a report on the object because for a long time they considered you a nut if you saw a UFO.
Paynter added the UFO incident didn’t stop there. He stated that he and Reagan had discussed their UFO sighting "from time to time" in the years following the incident.
Reagan, in his discussion of the sighting with Norman C. Miller added that he had told Nancy about the UFO he had seen, and they had done personal research on UFOs. This research had uncovered the facts that there were references to UFOs in Egyptian hieroglyphics. Reagan was telling his story in a very animated way. This led Miller to conclude that Reagan seriously believed in UFOs. He asked him, "Governor, are you telling me that you saw a UFO?"
Suddenly, according to Miller, Reagan realized that he was talking to a reporter. "This look crossed his face," recalled Miller, "and he said let’s just say that I’m an agnostic."

Here's the story of Jimmy Carter's UFO sighting:
As previously mentioned, Jimmy Carter is one of two U.S. Presidents who have reported seeing a UFO before becoming the President....
Carter’s UFO sighting began shortly after dark on a windless night. Jimmy Carter was standing outside the Lion’s Club in Leary, Georgia, waiting for a meeting to start. Suddenly, he and ten or more witnesses, sighted a red and green orb radiating in the western sky. Carter described an object that "it seemed to move towards us from a distance, stop, move partially away, return, then depart. Bluish at first; then reddish - luminous - not solid."
"At times," reported Carter, "it was as bright as the moon, and about as big as the moon - maybe a bit smaller. The object was luminous; not solid."
In an interview with the Atlanta Constitution, Carter described the moving nature of the event. He described the sighting as a "very remarkable sight." This is an important event, because many of the skeptical investigations done on the Carter sighting, have tried to paint the event as a ho-hum occurrence. None of the descriptions Carter has made of the event have ever described it as ho-hum.
Jimmy Carter’s mother Lillian also confirmed that Carter had been very impressed by what he had seen. "The UFO made a huge impression on Jimmy," she stated. "He told me about the sighting many times. He’s always been a down-to-earth no-nonsense boy, and the sighting by him, as far as I am concerned, is as firm as money in the bank."
Carter had, in fact, described the UFO sighting many times in the years since it occurred. In every instance, including the latest known telling of the story at Emory University in 1997, Carter has never backed off on the spectacular nature of the event. He has also never conceded that was he saw was some misidentification of a natural phenomena.
Carter estimated that the object was three hundred to one thousand yards away. He estimated that the event had lasted 10 minutes. Then the object disappeared. Carter was so impressed by what he had seen, he recorded his impressions of the event on a tape recorder at the time.

None of us realy know what happened.
What may someone think if I were to say: "I had a religous experience upon viewing, for the first time, the Grand Canyon. I felt the heavens were speaking to me. Life after that took on a totally different aura and I can say without doubt that the Universe spoke to me that day and changed the course of my life forever."
Am I a kook or someone sensitive to the mystical? Am I insane or simply in touch with the metaphysical aspect of life?
It's difficult to truly say what is going on. What is clear is that saying something like that can be handing over a weapon to someone who is cynical with an agenda.
We really don't know the truth to any of this, but by "photoshopping" a picture of Kucinich with a picture of a "flying saucer" makes me think of a cynical agenda.

TPM and David Kurtz...
I've been a reader of "TPM" since it's founding. I've always found David Kurtz's opinions (since he's a lawyer) excellent on this site.
BUT...taking this Smear Report about Dennis Kucinich via Shirley McClain...saying Dennis communes with UFO's is beyond the pale.
Do any of your remmber the Right Wing bash where it was said that Hillary Clinton was "channeling" Eleanor Roosevelt...back when the Mellon-Scaife operation was in "full mode attack" against the Clintons?
Anyone remember the SMEAR MACHINE against Al Gore..."Invented the Internet" and he and Hillary were the "inspiration for the novel "Love Story?"
How much evidence do mainstream blog sites need to know to understand the new Blogs are being played like a fiddle to the tune of Karl Rove and the departed Lee Atwater's smear tactics?
And...David Kurtz (whom, I said I've always admired and found his posts insightful in the past joined in on the Rove RW Snark with THIS comment at the end of a quote from a poster to TPM.
Here's a snip David's snarky quote at the end from TPM:
------------
From TPM Reader DF:
If Kucinich actually thinks he's seen a UFO, that is, at some level, "fair game", but consider this - on the scale of rating as prima facie disqualification for holding high office, how does belief that one has encountered an alien spacecraft above Shirley MacLaine's house compare to all the stated beliefs of all the GOP candidates (let alone their top advisers - cough, Norman Podhoretz, cough)? And, how much harm might come to us all if that person got into said office and could then act on those beliefs?
And with that consideration in mind, how appropriate is it for TPM to pile on with all the righty smear-merchants, when Kucinich is one of the few candidates out there consistently uttering the truths that TPM "holds dear"?
One particular point I take exception to - David included the part of the Plain Dealer article with this graf:
"I'm in favor of expanding opportunities for people to have a deeper understanding of the universe. . . . I don't think we could ever discount the possibility of other intelligent life in the universe," he said.
That's a totally non-controversial statement. There are 100,000,000,000 galaxies in the universe, of which ours is but one; ours, alone, holds 100,000,000,000 star systems, probably averaging more than one planet each; many serious astronomers not only don't "discount" the possibility of other intelligent life, many millions of dollars are being spent searching for radio signals from possible civilizations in other star systems.
So, please, don't participate in a slime that's partly based on Kucinich agreeing with significant numbers of very reality-based scientists.
Getting back to the nub of it - by peddling this unconfirmed (if undenied) report, you are doing us all a grave disservice by reinforcing the meme that Kucinich is a far-out wacko (DFH, even?) and helping to spread the notion that he shouldn't be listened to, when you could, instead, be talking about the substance of his policy ideas and helping to foster the national debate we need regarding where we want to go as a country, and how to get from here to there.
You folks do so much good work - please don't descend to the level of the sloppy, lazy reporting of the conventional media, the countering of which I thought was one of the main motivations for forming TPM in the first place.
(David's snark at end)
I would draw a distinction between assuming there is other life in the universe and thinking it is sending you messages.

So what? Lots of people have seen UFOs.
McClaine is no friend though, since she must know what kind of damage this could do to his political career. With friends like her, who needs enemies?

Oh my God! "A longtime friend of Shirley MacLaine", that could ruin Kucinich's reputation!
Now... what was the rest of the story about?

You all would love to be judgmental of me and my beliefs. I respect both Shirley & Dennis. The attackers believe the delusion that Bush is a President and in control and is a Republican with Chaney & Co. believe that deficit spending and record national debt does not matter(massive spending w/deficits & fiscal irresponsibility are not Republican values), when they came in we had a surplus. Then we wonder why gas costs so much money when it is worth so little in the world now. It is for the first time on a par with the Canadian $. And you would love to say that Shirley, Dennis & I are crazy for believing in peace, the betterment for all people in the planet and becoming their full potential and a richer spiritual life. I did not say religious. I think that I will keep my own delusions where I believe in UFO contacts & crop circles being a form of communication. Closed minds will never understand. At it's discovery, it was thought electricity was magic and evil.

UFO Central denied today that it had initiated an encounter with Dennis Kucinich. Its mission was to re-establish contact with expatriot Mike Gravel.

What matters is his PUBLIC PERFORMANCE AND RECORD. Think about it - would you rather have a president impeached for extramarital sex or for killing 2 million iraqis, shredding the constitution, torture, bringing us to the edge of WWIII, etc.?
Don't people have their own lives, beliefs? Why do we need to cling to a leader's? Isn't that what got us into the situation we are in today? To many Christian Fundamentalists choosing the 'godly' president? Haven't we learned our lesson???

So Dennis Kucinich saw a UFO?
And who eles has seen one, but was too afraid to admit it for exactly the reasons we are seeing now, because they were afraid to admit the truth?
And how much money have we, just the USA alone, spent on looking for life in the universe? And if that life we're looking for happens to find us before we find them, then why is anyone surprised?
Look at all of the presidents, Republican and Democrat, who've seen UFOs too. Were they crazy or honest?

What's more dangerous (I ask rhetorically)? DK seeing a UFO or GWB who thinks he's on a mission from god.
Quoting GWB: "I am driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did." August 2003

We Americans should be more concerned about GWB than about DK.

My E-mail to MSNBC:
hardball@msnb.com, subcin@aol.com
I realize that Mathews and his " Howard Beal" impersonation are good for MSNBCs ratings, but last night he went off the deep end and asked the other candidates if they also believe in UFOs like Kuncinich does. With all of the other important things to discuss, this hysterical old gossip monger is gnawing on a red meat, tabloid, soundbite.
Chris Mathews is about to have, or is in the middle of having a real emotional breakdown and the "NETWORK" is exploiting him just like the exploit everything they cover.
I bet you he has to take a leave of absence soon because he is out of control and will soon do something to embarass his handlers..
You all should know that This Network and The Fox Propaganda Network has opened Pandora's Box and it will all come back to bite you on the ass with a vengance.
What ever happend to The News?

What they hell does it matter if he saw a UFO or not? What kind of question is this? Even if he did, a UFO is an Unidentied Flying Object. That doesn't necessarily mean it came from outer space. These are absurd questions they ask so that becomes the title of the news piece on him regarding the Debates. All the pertinent and intelligent answers get thrown out the window. that Dennis Kucinich sat up there and said at least 3x to consider impeachment of Cheney. People, please realize this man is standing up for you, me, and our rights as the people of this country. We should thank him for having the guts to do that. We need help right now. We are losing our rights and we should all be concerned about that. If not for yourself, then think of the legacy that is getting left for the future.

I agree with Angel. It's pretty abysmal that Kucinich's comments about impeachment were totally ignored by the media coverage which chose to focus instead on UFOs. Which is worse: Seeing things that may or may not be out there and which may yet have a credible explanation; or not hearing, or refusing to acknowledge, a statement about our endangered democracy heard by millions of people?

If Chris Mathews had wings,...I would say Pigs can fly. If everyone could identify everything that was in the sky,...we wouldn't be mere humans. The question is framed,...why didn't he just ask do you believe that we will be invaded by aliens during your term? I think its more far-fetched to believe in God, than having seen something unrecognizable in the sky.

I watched the debate last night and was truly amazed in the way the audience heckled Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich. Afterwards the press treated him and the subject of UFOs as something of a joke, or worse! Perhaps all you hecklers need to be reminded ...
Ronald Reagan saw a UFO! The pilot of Governor Reagan's plane was Bill Paynter, and he backed up Reagan’s version of the incident with the UFO. Former Arizona Governor Fife Symington, since leaving office, said he too had witnessed the huge 'UFO triangle' sighting reported over Phoenix that so many folks saw over ten years ago. Oh yes, and how could we forget the much publicized UFO sighting that good ol' Jimmy had . So keep laughing ...
So why all the fuss after all these years? I believe that U.S. citizens, besides becoming a very cynical society, are also spending way too much time inside hiding in front of their computers , TVs or their work desks and not enough time outdoors where most all flying objects would be seen anyway. Please recall all those folks through out our history that were once laughed at for their progressive or different ideas. Many of them are frontiers in their field today and will forever live in our history books as a reminder of what can happen even after your friends and neighbors once tried making you into their town fool!

It sounds so pitiful to hear how those who do not believe comment. Actually, they sound like uneducated folks from the 1800's. Hopefully they will have the divine opportunity to see it for themselves.
