Huckabee Compares Safe-Sex Message To Drunk Driving, Domestic Violence
During a house party in New Hampshire over the weekend, Mike Huckabee was asked if his Christian values would prevent him from supporting funding for safe-sex programs. Huckabee then replied that it would be more important to ask people to simply not engage in reckless behavior.
"The best thing to do is to encourage people to make good choices," Huckabee said. "For example, if we were really serious about stopping a problem, whether it's drunk driving, we don't say, 'Okay, don't drive as drunk,' do we?"
Huckabee offered another example: "We don't say that a little domestic violence is okay, just cut it down a little, just don't hit quite as hard. We say it's wrong."
This is not the first time that Huckabee has expressed skepticism about condoms, having previously voiced his concerns about condom distribution in Africa creating a false sense of security.

We do say "don't drink and drive" or "use a designated driver." Huckabee would simply ask people not to have sex. Let us see, these programs tend to occur in deeply red states noted for high STD rates, teenage pregnancies and unwed mothers. Oh yea, they also do have higher rates or domestic violence and divorce.

No, Governor. Your analogy would be, "don't drive." "Don't drink and drive" is analagous to "practice safe sex." Both are common sense practice, AS THEY BOTH PREVENT THE RESULTS THEY ARE INTENDED TO PREVENT - i.e. highway injuries, and pregnancy/spread of disease respectively.

Huckabee has an interesting website. Under the issues section he has a specific heading for the Second Amendment. However, I could find no mention of the 4th Amendment anywhere. Not even under the War on Terrorism section.
Oh, but he will protect my heterosexual marriage by pushing for legislation to ban gay marriage. You know that makes me feel much better. Why just the other night I saw Andrew Sullivan on TV and .... you can only imagine how glad I am that Mike Huckabee is thinking of my marriage.
Of course, if I get drunk and I wear a condom I guess I won't get as drunk? Did I get that right?

On the other hand, it was no less than secular lefty Susan Jacoby who once quipped in the Sunday NY Times Magazine, "The term 'safe sex' belongs in the Oxymoron Hall of Fame." She has a point. This is in no way intended to let Huckabee off the hook, just to note this sentiment runs across the political spectrum.

I don't know which is weirder. That Huckabee is so insane, or that he is tied for second in today's Iowa poll from Rasmussen. Though I think the two are unfortunately related.

Huckabee, right? Would it be reckless to live in the Bible flats between the Allegheny and Rocky mountains where we keep the national Tornado supply?
Space travel is reckless too, at least technically. So it being a doctor or driving WHILE NOT drunk.
Fantasy land, people. Keep Mickey Mouse out of the White House.

Huckabee and Brownback are both on record claiming we should be arresting more people, and that it's a good in itself. I think we should arrest Kansas, or wherever these fruitcakes got their base.
Then we withhold the condoms.

um, I'm confused... is he saying that sex is like domestic violence? Perhaps he's started reading some radical feminist critiques?
Also, we do, actually, say don't drive as drunk. The law is you can't have more than .08 blood alcohol level, not that you can't have had a beer.

Too bad this backwoods Huckleberry's parents never learned about safe sex.

I tend to like Huckabee. He provides great entertainment value for the buck.
We could come up with Sex as Driving analogies all day... Oh, we are! See what I mean?
Personally, I like driving while having unprotected sex. I also like using condoms as birthday balloons. Is that wrong? Does that make me a bad christian?

Safe Sex? Let's see, I had a vasectomy back in the 70's and I'm a regular blood donor who has my blood screened, and accepted, every 50 something days so I guess I should be acceptable for any form of safe sex.
I will pass on the crudities which this screed invites and my feeling for a while has been that Huckleberry will be the eventual Repub nominee. Should make for an interesting election season.

It's hard to have safe-sex while plastered.

Huckabee would be scary, except that he has about as much chance of being elected President as Tom Tancredo does.

When are the Christians going to read their Bibles?
God tried just say no with Adam and Eve and it didn't work for him either. What makes them thing they are better than God?

Yes, consensual sex between consenting adults is really JUST LIKE drunk driving or domestic violence.
Dear Lord, these people have an incredibly morbid view of human intimacy. It's sad.
Sadder still because it's becoming increasingly clear that the present GOP consists largely of self-hating closeted homosexuals.

Selling a gun to the mentally disturbed Seung-hui Cho was risky.
Carrying guns openly on your hip into public restaurants serving alcohol (which is legal in Jesusland) is risky.
Dumping mine tailings into local streams is risky. Building coal-fired electric plants that spew CO2 into the atmosphere is risky. Invading Iraq was risky.
For Republicans, the issue isn't preventing risky behavior. It's preventing risky sexual behavior. If the behavior fits within the GOP's ideological bounds then it's OK.
What Huckabee hasn't come to terms with is what to do when his simplistic notions don't just not work, they cause people devastating harm.

The scary thing is, he's probably the most credible candidate the Republicans have running. I sure hope Giuliani and Romney don't become so preoccupied with each other that they let ol' Huck slip by while they're looking the other way.

one of the greatest pleasures in life is driving down a backcountry Texas road enjoying a beer and a bj. I guess that means I'll have to vote for Mrs. Bill Clinton.

Pretty much everybody knows that unprotected sex can result in pregnancy, or an STD. And yet, people continue to have unprotected sex. Why is that? Because it is a basic drive, because it feels good, because people get drunk or stoned or are afraid to say no, and any one of a thousand other reasons - but a campaign to promote condom use would create 'a false sense of security.' This man is a serious candidate for president; this country is insane!

Actually, yes we do, guvnah. Where've you been the past 25 years?
Getting drunk is legal. Drinking and driving is not. Just ask GWB or Cheney.
