GOP House Candidate Airs Wrenching TV Ad About His Dead 9/11 Pilot Brother

Don't miss this one. A GOP House candidate whose brother was the airline pilot of one of the hijacked planes that crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11 is airing a new, heavily emotional, must-see TV ad that contains testimonials to his later brother and images of the towers.

The ad is the work of Republican Jim Ogonowski, a hard-charging candidate vying for the vacant seat of Democrat Marty Meehan in a special election this month. In it, Ogonowski's sister-in-law praises Jim for taking over the family farm after the brother's death while an image of a jet a second away from contact appears on the screen. "I don't know that we would have been able to keep this house and farm if it weren't for Jim. He's someone that you would want representing us in Congress."

MA-05 is definitely becoming very sensible territory, with the GOP waging an all-out effort. If they manage to pull off a miracle, could GOP recruitment not improve dramatically in the next few weeks? House Rankings

No disrespect, but when is 9/12 going to get here. I personally find these ads repugnant. What does this tell anyone about what this guy will do in congress???

Do an ad that explains his positions so people will know what they are getting when they vote for him, unlike traitor joe. How about whether he would vote to override the kings veto on schip? How about his position on the Iraq war? How about congressional oversight? How about the things that are important for our future?

Never forget the past, but don't keep reliving it like yesterday. I can't wait for 9/12 so that our country moves forward as opposed to constantly reliving 9/11.

Michael, I hate to say it, but this kind of ad and what it evokes drowns out those questions.

Why not just have his brother's widow speaking to the camera, and not show the obvious and horrible image of one of the plane's about to hit one of the WTC towers...good grief. His brother was killed not him! don't run on the past, run on the future and what you can do for your constituents. oh and sorry for your loss sir.

After the millions of dollars of insurance and 9/11 payouts, why does she even need the brother-in-laws help keeping the 'farm'. I know it sounds very hard, but her husband was a very well paid pilot. Most victims families lived paycheck to paycheck . I am sure that their families helped them just as much. So, is that really a good reason to vote for someone?

This is my district, and the special election is a week away, on 10/16. Since special elections usually have very low voter turnout, the MA GOP is hoping that they can pull this off by getting every single Republican in the area to the polls that day. I hope not, and I'm fairly confident that the Dem (Niki Tsongas, the wife of the late Senator Paul Tsongas) will win. But it might be a closer election than many MA Dems woud like. We've got to get as many Dems as possible to the polls that day.

I guess to me, it is not surprising that a family member would say something nice about ... another family member. I certainly feel terrible that the Oganowskis had to go through this tragedy. But that is not how to decide on voting for someone. What they actually will do in Congress is all that matters. I believe that he has been talking about "succeeding in Iraq", which means continuing the occupation of Iraq. Is that message really going to resonate with Massachusetts voters?

This add tells us exactly what we need to know about the Congressional Candidate here.

If a widow is struggling to maintain the family farm, Candidate will arrive and keep things in order.

Like this country, which is much like a widow, he will keep the family farm that is congress up and running.

Makes sense.

These are very sick people to run an AD like they are doing. What's next showing
the charred corpses of 911.Anyone voting for this gas bag has to be not the brightest bulb.

I didn't mind the ad. The one thing that bothers me is that he is 49 years old yet the only thing I can find that he did was serve in the Air Force. I can't even find out what rank he achieved. Other than the fact his brother died in 9/11, which is sad but not a qualification, I can't find much of anything about him.

user-pic

Oh for crying out loud. If this were a Dem running the same ad, you can bet Joe Scarborough would be on the air asking why the "loser pilot" couldn't keep the cockpit door closed.

Truly foul.

I guess his mouth-breathing Tancredo-type position on immigration isn't polling well.

He also won't take a position on SCHIP.

But, you know, 9/11.

user-pic

Its just politics, its just politics, its just political....

user-pic

This has been dismissed on a MA state blog. The tactic is really rather reprehensible. The candidate had nothing to do with 9/11, but he is trying to wrap himself in the "reflected glory" of someone with whom he was associated.

You'll notice there's not one mention in the ad that this guy is a Republican.
