Dems Hope To Recruit Another Senate Candidate In New Mexico
Apparently not content to settle with the current candidates in the field — Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez and businessman Don Wiviott — national Democrats including DSCC Chairman Chuck Schumer and EMILY's List are hoping to draw New Mexico Lt. Governor Diane Denish into the Senate race, according to Roll Call.
Denish is seen as the Democrats' best option to pick up the open seat, after Rep. Tom Udall and Gov. Bill Richardson both declined to run. Recruiting her would be a major coup for Schumer, as Denish is seen as having the inside track in the race to succeed Richardson in the Governor's office after his term expires in 2010 — but would also have to cancel any ambitions for the governor's office if she's elected to the Senate in 2008.

I still am perplexed by why SUSA left Denish out of its first poll a few days ago, but I do know Shumer should try to get Udall back in.
Also yesterday, it was revealed that Hastert was supporting Wilson versus Pearce, in a bit of a surprise. Wilson might have an easier time than predicted getting the nomination.

Right on Daniel, the pressure needs to be on Udall, not Denish.
My thoughts: Denish winning the senate seat leaves the Governor's race vulnerable to the GOP.
There are plenty of Dems who could take Udall's seat, Santa Fe will NOT elect a Republican. I think Denish could win either race, so why not place them to win it all?
I think White will present a great challenge for Wilson's seat, we'll be fighting hard enough there. And it looks like other Dems will not be sitting back and letting Heinrich take the nod either making the situation no better. (This is assuming White as the GOP nominee which I consider a given already). Put the right people in place to make the other races easier so we can focus on this battle.
If the cards are played right and Wilson and Pearce give up their seats to run for Senate, 2 Senators and all 3 Reps. & the Governor in NM could be Dems. It's not that far-fetched. But no chance at all with Mayor Marty as the Senate nominee or with Denish out of the Governor's race.

Dave,
I understand your enthusiasm but I think Pearce's seat is safely Republican. Joe Lieberman (were he a New Mexican) might win in the South but I don't believe any other Democrat from down South could win.
Udall's seat is safely Democratic (Big Bill was his elected predecessor.) Tom has the name recognition to run a successful statewide campaign. He is also very good on issues important to all New Mexicans. The Republicans will try to paint him as a screeching liberal, but if you look at his voting record he is pretty pragmatic. He has been consistently against the war in Iraq but votes for Veterans Benefits. As a matter of fact he has been a leader on Veterans issues long before others jumped on the MeTOO! bandwagon.
Denish should remain in the Governors race! She would defeat most of the Republican names I've heard mentioned.
Marty: Go back to dentistry. They need you. Please.
Big Bill might still look at a run for Pete's seat. After the February 5 uber-primary he will be out of gas and the deadline for filing to run for the open Senate seat is February 12th. Who really knows the mind of Big Bill anyway?
Heinrich has a great chance to snag Heather's seat. (ahem, Congressional seat) He's smart, good looking, and very motivated. He's got political rock star written all over himself. He might be one of the strongest, up and comers New Mexico Democrats have seen in years. Don't be surprised if he is the candidate to take Bingaman's seat down the line. (Provided he wins next year.)
Darren White has a lot of political baggage. He will be an easy target for the Democrats because of his selective law enforcements techniques and the problems certain Republicans have with him. Once he gets specific on the issues it will be interesting to watch him flail about under tough scrutiny. He needs a lot of polishing. He's not unlike Patsy Madrid in that respect.
