Brownback To Introduce Apology For Slavery And Segregation

Sam Brownback has a new initiative he's working on: An official government apology for slavery and segregation.

"They were federal policies," Brownback told the Boston Globe editorial board. "They were wrong. The only way for us to move forward ... is at the end of day acknowledging those, taking ownership for it, and asking for forgiveness."

Brownback said he is working with an as-yet-unnamed Democrat to craft a resolution. In an interesting commentary on just how contentious the Senate is these days, Brownback also said he expects a tough fight in getting such a non-binding resolution passed.

It sounds like the process could be as revealing as the product.

Sam, Sam, Sam. If slavery was wrong, why does the Bible condone it? There are many examples in both Testaments. For example,
"Leviticus 25:44-46: "Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly." (NIV)"

Temporary residents? Hold on, I think I just stumbled onto a solution for the illegal immigration problem!

Sam, the fine art of performance relies upon the performer just being themselves. All this anti-segregationism is persiflage that serves only to beat around the bush. Just be you Sam. After all you're unique. God's never made another you (we dearly hope). I would far prefer to see you craft a "sense of the Senate" resolution which supports teaching schoolchildren that "blacks" are born with tails. Just be you, Sam. Whatever happened to holding the fort against depredations practiced on the most beloved Conservative shillobeths?

I'm very disappointed to see you in this compromised position. That little light of yours? Just let it shine, and don't worry about pleasing voters of color. They'll continue to hate your guts until the day you die, even if you waited until you were in your 60s to conclude that slavery was a bad thing.

It just rings false, Sam, it just rings false...

TQTGA quotes bible passages to show that perhaps slavery is OK with God...
Well, no. Not exactly. You see, biblical slavery, as practiced in the near East, was nothing like modern Western slavery. I suggest you read this very well thought out essay on the topic:

Ummm, I seem to remember that slavery in particular was a matter of state policy. The Federal government had no say over slavery until we amended the Constitution. I also seem to recall one Robert F. Kennedy (a federal Attorney General) having had something to do with ending segregation.
