Source: Edwards To Announce Nearly 1,000,000 In New SEIU Labor Supporters Today

The Edwards campaign is being very tight-lipped today about the raft of new SEIU state affiliates that they have reportedly racked up.

But a source familiar with the endorsements tells me that Edwards is set to announce the support of new SEIU affiliates that total nearly 1,000,000 in new members. That's a substantial jolt, suggesting that Edwards' hard work in courting the service employees is paying off and giving Edwards a way of claiming a new burst of momentum.

The campaign says they'll be announcing something today at 6:30, at which point we'll know for sure which states comprise the nearly 1,000,000 members newly for Edwards. More later.

If you are a member of a SEIU affiliate that endorses a candidate, are you prohibited from working for another candidate?

Ben Smith of the politico has been doing a ton of reporting on this, is worth looking at:

Great news for Edwards, that's over half the total membership.

Good for Edwards. But just as I thought AFT endorsing Clinton in the primary was a waste of precious General election funds and energy, I think this is similarly a waste. The Dem differences are minor compared to Dem-GOP differences.

Since I'm an outsider I can't make a legitimate judgement. But I do hope they have a lot of energy heading into the general. With Edwards staying within public finance limits, they are going to need a lot of time, money and energy to compensate.

There's a big difference between Edwards' and Hillary's proposals and positions. Edwards wasn't on the cover of Fortune Magazine - and his chief strategist doesn't own a union busting company.
Plus - Hillary's positions keep changing.
Just sayin...

In response to Keith. Members of the SEIU can work for, contribute to, or vote for any candidate they wish. Many times the rank and file of some unions such as the UAW or the Teamsters are more conservative that than the union leadership.

That is not the case with the SEIU, but there will be significant pockets of support for Clinton and Obama within the state SEIUs that have endorsed Edwards.

I would love to see Edwards get it. He's got guts. Not as good as Kucinich, but he will definitely win, by a landslide and will not surrender like Gore and Kerry.
