Obama Camp: ASFCME Endorsed Hillary Because Bill And Union Head Are Pals

Barack Obama campaign manager David Plouffe has just sent out a statement on the AFSCME endorsement of Hillary today, claiming that the friendship between AFSCME chief Gerry McEntee and Bill Clinton drove the union's backing of his wife. Key quote:

“We understand that Gerry McEntee and Bill Clinton have a long and close relationship so the push for a Clinton endorsement is no surprise. It is a bit surprising that the union probably most concerned with state and local election results would support the candidate with the likeliest least appeal in red states."

Meanwhile, Ben Smith summarizes the rest of the pushback against this endorsement by Hillary's rivals, pointing out that ASFCME endorsed Howard Dean in 2004 (look how that turned out) and backed the wrong Dem in the Iowa gubernatorial primary last year. The full Obama statement after the jump.

Full statement from Obama campaign magager David Plouffe:

"We understand that Gerry McEntee and Bill Clinton have a long and close relationship so the push for a Clinton endorsement is no surprise. It is a bit surprising that the union probably most concerned with state and local election results would support the candidate with the likeliest least appeal in red states. When Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee, he will not only win the presidency but his appeal to Republicans and Independents will lift down ballot candidates all across the country.

"Illinois AFSCME endorsed Obama in his Senate primary in 2004 and in this campaign we are thrilled by the meaningful support we have from AFSCME members across the country. When he’s in the White House, Obama will strongly advocate for the rights of AFSCME members and working men and women all over the country."

a Billary tag is actually a pretty cool idea.

I guess the two questions I would have are, has the AFSCME ever backed anyone who won? Also, when the AFSCME endorsed Howard Dean, was that just cronyism too? Anyway, I'm not so sure how great a strategy dis'ing the AFSCME board is going to turn out to be in the long run. Not only does it sound just a teensy bit like sour grapes, but there are probably at least a few members among the other 22 that voted for the Clinton endorsement who are under some illusion that they think for themselves. I'm just sayin'...

user-pic

This isn't unexpected. It's been clear for a while that the Clinton campaign is going to have the best backroom deals because of their role in the party over the past couple of decades. Obama and Edwards are always going to be the insurgent campaigns, and insurgent campaigns always have trouble lining up the big endorsements in the primaries.

user-pic

Democrats should be careful of how much they attack each other, because their general election poll numbers are definitely starting to tank.

user-pic

One more reason not to vote for Obama (not that I intend to vote for Clinton, but it makes Obama look sleazy).

user-pic

If indeed the Dems are "starting to tank" it is because they've done nothing to change direction in Washington, save offer up the inevitabitly of Hillary Clinton, a scam Sargent and Kleefeld have done their sophmoric best to foster

This collapse has legs

If some of the members ever actually wanted to support Obama despite the endorsement, his campaign just blew that out of the water.

What an utterly stupid move.

user-pic

The rank-in-file who support Obama still support Obama

user-pic

Mr. Hillary's been putting the arm to his rolodex fpr months now. Part of his marriage settlement

I know that
AFSME members know that

All those elected officials who've snapped smartly into line like good little hacks know that

Everyone does

I'm waiting for someone to accuse the Obama camp of whining. How about it, guys? You're quick enough to employ that characterization against the Clinton camp.

This AFSCME endorsement just more of the Clinton version of Bush 3 Card Monty

Let's keep your eye on the Queen..

NyT

A day after she appeared to struggle to give her views on the subject, Hillary Rodham Clinton offered support today for Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s effort to award New York driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, as her campaign sought to contain potentially damaging fallout from a what her own supporters saw as a tense and listless debate performance.

First Obama questioned the validity of New Hampshire SEIU's endorsement of Edwards. Now he is making similar dismissive comments about AFSCME's endorsement of Clinton. Is there a common theme here? Is this less about the candidates being endorsed by labor or that Obama isn't?

Obama's first promise to voters was a campaign on issues not personal attacks, a new kind of politics. Now that his numbers are sputtering he is attacking the intergrity of labor. Also he is flip flopping and now promising to rachet up the personal attacks against Hillary. What happened to issues? Is the new politcs passe already? For all of the inspiration I felt when I read The Audacity of Hope, I'm guessing the follow up book is the Cynicism of Desperation.

Barack Obama is beginning to sound more and more like Kanye West. You should talk to women who watched Tim Russert and the guys spend a night baiting and attacking a woman without really expressing their positions.

user-pic

This is hilarious.. So if a woman is a candidate, you cannot ask her questions.. Is this how a presidency shoudl be run.."if you ask me questions.. then you are accusing me".. What a joke..

I am glad that finally people are waking up to see her double talk and double standards. I like her but when I see how she can FLIP-FLOP so well, it makes me wonder what she will do in the future.

There are a lot of women who just stand on the base of a "WOMAN IN THE OVAL OFFICE". No one has a problem to that but be careful who you will put in there. I fully support a woman but NOT THIS ONE. She is double talker and just explains why she remained SILENT when many women were ABUSED by BILL CLINTON. No matter how good a president you are, you cannot EXPLOIT A woman. President FORD was absolutely right when he said BILL CLINTON HAS A SEXUAL ADDICTION Problem and you think HILLARY did not know it. She chose to cover up since she knew that he would be helpful; for her in the political game. Isn't that obvious when they dont even live together now a days. How hypocritical for women when they support a WOMAN who has closed her to those who have been abused and also joked about MOMS as those who BAKE COOKIES..

user-pic

If you think that Mr. Obama, you are delusional. That union has been a staunch fried of Hillary's since she worded on the health plan in the 90s. It is good for you to come out swinging, but for goodness sakes, get your facts straight first. Unions not only worry about their members but also about their member's families. They know that no worker can relax and do good work if one member of even his or her extended family is facing a dreaded illness or disease and is uninsured.

Someone needs to do the definitive takedown of Hillary's complete sellout of feminist principles. She's now a parody of feminism. When she has one bad debate performance, it's because of sexism. She pretends that electing her would make a great statement about progress toward gender equality in the United States, but she never allows for the possiblity that maybe, just maybe, the real proof will come when someone whose career is not spinoff of her husband's career gets a major party nomination. For her to say that electing her would break the "highest glass ceiling there is" without recognition of the head start she got by inheriting her husband's political apparatus brings to mind what Ann Richards said of George Bush the elder, who himself was a Senator's son--that "he was born on third base and thinks he it a triple." Hillary's hardly better. Oh, and Hillary often makes specific, direct appeals to women to vote for because she is a woman, undermining the feminist position that gender should not be a criterion for job selection.

Back to the main thread here: Bill's connections have helped Hillary. Whether Obama's people should have made that link regarding AFSCME I cannot say; they probably should have ignored it though Hillary's people routinely try to minimize Obama's endorsements, like that of Deval Patrick, claiming it was based on an old friendship and common political consultants.

Finally, I have very close ties to the union community and I can say that Gerry McEntee the president of AFSCME is known as one of the most top-down autocratic union leaders in the country, and his members know that. So the rank and file will vote for who they want and won't give much weight to McEntee. Nor will his E-Board be insulted by Obama, since McEntee buffaloes that board, and they know it.

IMAGINE

Not too long ago in in early August at a debate in Iowa, Edwards and all the third tier candidates took turns whacking Obama right at the beginning of the debate, hosted I believe by G. Stephanopoulos. Obviously, their consultants had advised them there was a possible opening for the slot of "top alternative" to Hillary and that the right strategy was to try to oust Obama from that perch. When it was finally his turn to answer a question, Obama joked that he had trained for the debate by riding the bumper cars at the state fair.

Imagine if Obama, after having been criticized, had said, through his campaign staff, that "the questions all came from white reporters," and that a half a dozen "white candidates" "ganged up" on him. Would not the lead story in the MSM and probably on Election Central be: "Obama plays the race card"? The answer of course would be "yes," that would be the lead -- and justifiably so.

Why does Hillary repeatedly get a pass on this. Whenever she's down, her staff--echoed by many but not all of her supporters who comment on this website--say that she's the victim of sexism?

Enough already. It's despicable.

user-pic

Hmmm Mr. Obama, it sounds like sour grapes. I do hope you do not sink to nasty campaign strategy or you will truly be worse than you Claim Hillary is about changing your positions. In all honesty, you know perfectly well that the union endorsement of Hillary has not one thing to do with her husband, Bill. Unions endorse those folks they think will keep the economy sound, etc. Improve your program ideas and then start speaking about their details and you will not have to stoop to this sleeze.
