What A Coincidence! Rudy's "Surprise" Cell Phone Call From Judi -- It's Happened Before

While delivering his big speech today before the National Rifle Association, Rudy was interrupted by a cell phone call from his wife, Judith Nathan. An apparently surprised Rudy told the crowd, "it's my wife," spoke to her for a moment, and closed the call with a touching, I'm-happily-married moment, saying, "I love you" to her in front of a crowd of gun rights types.

Is it possible that the man forgot to turn off his cell -- or at least stick the thing on vibrate -- while giving a major speech that could be critical to the outcome of his candidacy? Or is it possible that Judi didn't know about the speech?

On the other hand, it turns out that this isn't the first time this has happened to Rudy, whose past failed marriages could turn out to be a liability among conservative voters. A rival campaign has sent us some video of Rudy receiving a very similar "surprise" call from Judy at the podium during an event last June. And he did the "I love you" thing then, too.

Take a look:

Although I'd be inclined to think this is political theater, acting pussy-whupped in front of the NRA isn't going to gain him any support.

Now, if he'd answered the phone with "Bitch, I'm trying to give a speech here. Damn!" and hung up and said, "Women! Sheesh!" then he would have got a standing ovation.

user-pic

heh -- indeed. now that would have been quite a show...if he'd done that he'd have unanimous support from conservative voters from now until the end of his second term as President...

user-pic

damn, the level of cynicism in the manipulation of his supporters to pull a stunt like this. wanna bet the national political media will eat it up...

user-pic

i am absolutely speechless.

how utterly transparent, cynical, and insulting to his audience.

i would be outraged.

user-pic

You would be outraged? Maybe. The NRA? Nothing causes outrage at the NRA, not even the killings at VA Tech.

user-pic

Bob Newheart does it better.

user-pic

And that shit gets applause from the NRA?

Of course it was staged. Before he even took the phone out of his pocket, he said it was his wife. It was all set up.

He should have said "current wife." I am surprised the thought of having a bona fide home wrecker as First Lady isn't turning off more Republican women, who are overwhelmingly married with children.

"I am surprised the thought of having a bona fide home wrecker as First Lady isn't turning off more Republican women, who are overwhelmingly married with children."

Just remember: It's OK if You're A Republican. With this, everything becomes clear and easy.

Ann Coulter can publicly wish for the death of John Edwards, a standing US Senator, and nothing happens. When MoveOn uses a sarcastic term for a US General, that same US Senate drops everything to pass a resolution condemning it.

George Bush could bite the head off a chicken live on FoxNews, and Republicans would fall all over themselves justifying it in the name of fighting avian flu.

user-pic

Would have been funnier if it was a telemarketer.

user-pic

btw, now that everyone knows about Rudy's schtick, the proper response the next time he pulls it is for a heckler to yell loudly, "Which one?"

user-pic

Now we know that both Rudy and his wife are cheap publicity whores. So, what's new.

user-pic

we know 2 things

-- his phone rang
-- he answered it

that is all we know

-- was it an alarm that rang?
-- was it a staffer calling?
-- do you actually believe it was the 3rd mrs. ghouliani calling?

user-pic

9-11 changed everything.
Before 9-11, Rudy wouldn't take calls from Judith while he was giving a lecture.
Oops!
That's because he was still married to his second wife and cheating with his third wife in his World Trade tower love nest, back then.

user-pic

yep. just saw a cnn report by bill schneider that included this bit as part of a cutesy story about rudy -- except schneider didn't take it as a bit.

user-pic

Maybe he's trying to burnish his tarnished family values image for the Base.

user-pic

I wonder if he will go and buy a pig farm in Texas and turn it into a ranch so he can look like a cowboy. He may even like horses.

user-pic

Nevertheless, you will note that no matter what Giuliani does, the media punks think he is manly and a stand-up guy. They give everything Giuliani does a gloss.

You had better start telling OTHER people about him. It is not enough that we can rant, laugh or criticize Giuliani here -- the rest of the country needs to be informed.

user-pic

take this with as much salt as you will, but politico is reporting that much, if not most, of the nra audience was not amused.

user-pic

-- do you actually believe it was the 3rd mrs. ghouliani calling?

Well, it doesn't matter whether it was or not - it was obviously staged, and he wanted us to think it was her. My only question is "Why?" What's the message here? Whose bright idea was this little trick, and what did they hope it would do for him?

To show he's a devoted husband? This makes him look henpecked. To call attention to her? That seems very counterproductive - powerful or attention-commanding women make Republicans get all scared.

user-pic

this was obviously a political stunt meant to remind ppl he's happily married. i doubt he ever received a phone call though. here's why: don't you think that if you're rudy giuliani and you leave your phone on, you get more than one cell phone call in an hour?

user-pic

That's awesome. Rudy has showmanship! I don't know whether to cringe at it cynicism or applaud its audacity. C'mon guys lets not ruin it by spoling the secrets...
You know what's weird though, the people who were in attendance at that event are the very same people who will never find out that it was all theatre.

user-pic

Why isn't this being reported more? He's LYING to Americans. Just as Clinton did when he pointed his finger at the camera and denied having sex with Monica.

Silly, he's a republican! It's ok for them to lie (and cheat on their spouses, evade taxes, etc).
