The Thompson Campaign: One Shakeup After Another
Fred Thompson has been losing a bunch of top staffers at the perfectly opportune time: Just as he's about to finally declare his candidacy.
Jim Mills, who only weeks ago left his position as a high-ranking Fox News producer in order to join Thompson's communications team, has left the campaign. After about a month in the Thompson camp, Mills has been replaced by former Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Karen Hanretty and Bush 2004 communications staffer Jeff Sadowsky.
And now Jim Geraghty is reporting that Mark Corallo, who was with Thompson at the inception of this campaign and has been his chief press spokesman, is also gone.

Lights! Camera! Action!
Are these people also claiming it's because Thompson's wife is running (ruining?) the show?
GMF wrote on September 5, 2007 8:31 PM:For months, I've been afraid that Thompson had a real chance of not only getting the repub nomination, but winning the 2k8 election outright.
After seeing his god-awful commercial and now this, I'm thinking he's done.
The guy is apparently as inept as any of the other GOP candidates.
Thank god.

What we don't need in any candidate is someone who can't manage his people. If he can't do that, how will he keep track of world affairs. I know Presidents have staff for that but the buck stops at the big desk. I hope Thompson is toast.

I have long wanted a copy of what I used to think was the perfect political commercial, titled "Common Sense." Everyone who wants to know about Thompson's idea of a campaign should see it. He looked at the camera, confidently leans on his truck (I think) and lists problems. He then announces that solving those problems is just common sense. He leaves the viewer without a clue as to what he thinks the common sense solution to any of them actually is, but he sounds good.
KY3 Democrat wrote on September 5, 2007 10:11 PM:Isn't Thompson supposed to be the second coming of Reagan? He looks presidential, he has little substance, he's an empty suit, just like Reagan. The Repubs like a man who looks good and can follow orders.
Thmpson might just be the Repub pick.. Just don't let Clinton or Edwards or Obama get a piece of him during a debate.
"Please hand back Senator Thompson's ass so he can answer the next question..."
Hype-Jersey wrote on September 5, 2007 10:17 PM:Ugh.... I don't understand what all the initial flap was about with this guy. This guy is supposed to be the Reaganesque charasmatic leader the repugs are waiting for? Who are they kidding? He looks like a paper bag with feet.
IamSpartacus wrote on September 5, 2007 10:42 PM:So Thompson certainly looks like a president--old, stately, white, drives a (rented) red truck--but apparently that's all it is!
In one on-line campaign video, he speaks vaguely about federalism and devolution of powers--but at the same time, he tries to play up the macho national security card in other places.
How can he reconcile diluting the central government's power with increasing the central government's control of security at the same time?
This guy is just an empty suit.
I just really want interviews of the disgruntled campaign workers (or maybe save them for later...in case he gets the nomination).
NH Dem wrote on September 5, 2007 11:17 PM:Dammit. I kinda want this guy in the race for more than two weeks, and it looks like he might not make it.
Unless it's held in 2007, I doubt he makes it to the primary. I'm guessing he dodges open-to-the-public NH events as long as he can, then wobbles and crashes before the end of his third town hall. Although he might, in true Larry Craig/George W. Bush style, vigorously deny that he had any problems and insist that he is making good progress.
What sound does a semi-deflated balloon make when it pops?
Last Dem In Norman wrote on September 5, 2007 11:31 PM:Debate? Who says Fredo is going to debate?
Pshaw! That is just too much work!
Here, ya'll take more pictures of me leanin' on m'truck.
Rick B wrote on September 5, 2007 11:36 PM:If I were doing a political cartoon of the Thompson campaign I would picture a ship sitting at the dock about half sunk with the rat-protection cones on the hawsers tied to the dock turned backwards to keep the rats ON the ship.
And this is the last, best hope of the Republican Party for 2008? He's beginning to make Giuliani look good.
