Reid: Defeat Of Webb Bill Proves GOP Cares More About Bush Than Troops

Here's Harry Reid's statement on the failure of the Webb troop rest bill to garner the 60 votes it needed to clear a GOP filibuster:

“In blocking this bipartisan bill, Republicans have once again demonstrated that they are more committed to protecting the President than protecting our troops. They have shown they will allow President Bush’s flawed war strategy to continue to strain our military rather than allow the availability of troops to dictate our operations. And they believe it is in our national security interest to push our brave troops and their families beyond their breaking point.

“Democrats disagree. We care deeply about rebuilding our badly overextended military and ensuring our troops have the time to properly train, prepare for and recover from battle. And Democrats remain committed to repaying in some small measure the sacrifices our brave troops are making every day.”

Amazing at this late date to see the Repukes still so lemming like, intent on committing hara kiri.

1.20.09 -- The end of an error

Are we there yet?

Great example of a time when Reid should be delivering a hard-hitting one or two line condemnation of the Republicans, but instead delivers a long-winded almost, but not quite completely, unquotable statement.

It's too bad there's apparently no circumstance under which our leaders in either house of Congress can just come across as strong, resolute, and convincing.

this is no surprise to anybody who been following the repub party. We as a people who care about our country should've made sure we had voted them out in 2006

Why don't the Democrats force the Republicans to actually filibuster, instead of caving in to the mere threat of a filibuster? Those SOBs are so old they wouldn't last a day and a half without giving it up. WHY SENATOR REID WHY WHY WHY! People are dying needlessly while you guys dither and fret. Make them actually filibuster and we'll see who blinks first...

As long as the Repubs have the Dems arguing about side issues, the real issue they're afraid of debating, namely ending the war and hence the gravy train, remains safe from public criticism...

Baby steps are better than nothing.

Come on, Harry, talk more like a cowboy. Short and too the point, dripping with disgust, disdain and contempt. It's not that hard under the circumstances.

W's some kind of snake-charmer. I'd like to see these Repubs (along with Lieberman) go back to their respective states and explain to exhausted military families exactly how this benefits them ("this way, our brave fighting men and women don't have to be bothered by the strident voices of dissension; besides, sometimes going home is actually harder when you know you have to leave again").

The campaign adds pretty much write themselves:

Over a photo of Senator X smiling and shaking hands with Bush: In September 2007, Senator X voted to block a law that would have guaranteed that our troops in Iraq have as much time at home with their units as they spend depoloyed in Iraq. Since Senator X voted to block that law, another _____ Americans have died in Iraq, and you - the American taxpayer - have spent another $____ billion on this war.

It's time for a senator who really will support the troops. In November, elext _________, Democrat, to the U.S. Senate.

I agree with Rusty. Make them read the phonebook Force the 'so called liberal media' to report on that

user-pic

Fer cryin' out loud. Sen. Reid, this is not about proving who cares more for the troops, but about doing something the troops need done!

Don't moan about the mean Republicans, fight for the Webb amendment. Bring it back, keep pushing cloture votes, and force the Rs to filibuster.

What possible excuse is there not to do this?
