Poll: Majority of Kentuckians Disapprove of McConnell on Iraq
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has had the unenviable task of leading Senate Republicans in championing President Bush's stance on Iraq. Unfortunately for him, a new poll finds that Iraq has a taken a toll on his approval rating just as he was gearing up to run for re-election in 2008.
The Lexington Herald-Leader poll finds McConnell with only a 47% approval rating, and 44% disapproval. The key reason appears to be Iraq — 55% of respondents disapprove of McConnell's position on Iraq, compared to only 38% who approve.
If this keeps up — with little or no progress in Iraq, and McConnell continuing to back up the White House — could he be truly vulnerable next year?

MoveOn Takes Its Anti-Rudy Ad National

McConnell is definitely vulnerable, but rumors have been flying that Stumbo will not enter in the race after all, which would save McConnell from a competitive race.

Here in the Commonwealth, McConnell has been pummeled by ads from MoveOn and Americans United for Change. McConnell is a notable Senate obstructer and stay-the-course agent for Bush. The ads have been focusing attention on him, and if there is one thing he does not like, it's being in the spotlight (the Craig scandal was the best thing that ever happened to Mitch).
I've called his office several times with political complaints; even his staff appears to have sipped the Kool-Aide. McConnell appears to have surrounded himself with a shell of true believers.
Even intra-state, McConnell is seeing his kingdom unravel. Well, yes, after he endorsed Ernie Fletcher as governor, who later became one of the most corrupt governors we've seen in a while (and KY has seen some real pigs).
At this point, McConnell cannot be salvaged. There's nothing left of him that Kentucky or the nation wants from him. We are going to do the right thing and retire this guy next year.

Those rumors about Stumbo making a decision are unfounded. He's still in the exploratory phase of the race and hasn't made a decision yet.
