Poll: Coleman's Lead Slipping

Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN) leads his Democratic opponents by only a narrow margin in a new Rasmussen poll. The poll has Coleman beating Al Franken 46%-41%, and topping trial attorney Mike Ciresi 46%-42% — results that are within the margin of error and showing the incumbent below 50%.

The poll gives Coleman a 54% favorable rating and a 46% unfavorable ratings, compared to Franken's 46%-47% rating and Ciresi's 40%-43% numbers.

Six months ago, Rasmussen had Coleman leading Franken by a 46%-36% margin.

Coleman is going to be a top target for Democrats in 2008, due his strong support for the Bush Administration on the Iraq War despite coming up from a Dem-leaning state.

How cool would it be to have Al Franken in the Senate?

Coleman's days seem numbered. What about Vitter, what with the new allegations:

Coleman might get a boost from the fact that the 2008 GOP convention is in Minneapolis. On the other hand, recent GOP Senate activity in the area might make him want to run away from the party.

So Norm when you gonna announce you support a date certain for withdrawing troops from Iraq? Better do it now or we might think your change of heart is motivated by a desire to be re-elected. Oh, and after the announcement can we all go ride ponies?

NaNa, NaNaNaNa, hey hey goodbye.......

First, from the title, I would have guessed that the poll showed flagging support for Coleman, but the actual poll showed Franken shoring up support and in fact, Coleman's favorability rating are actually UP since March (conveniently left out of this).

Second, how does a poll that may actually reflect (given a reasonable MoE; Rasmussen neglectfully didn't report it) the same exact sentiments as six months ago make front page news.

I love TPM in general, but I'm just sayin'...

During the convention there should be extra security in public restrooms in the area. Republicans should be warned, for their own good.

Dave wrote on September 11, 2007 2:35 PM:

First of all, the convention is not in Minneapolis -- it's in St. Paul. Get it right, please.

And that's important because when Norm ran for senator in 2002, he won exactly 0 of the city's 94 precincts.

Ironically, Norm's biggest support is in Minneapolis and the wealthu suburbs -- his type of people.

I've heard Al in a debate.

I've heard Norm in a debate.

I live in a different state but I would LOVE to see the debate between these two.

My money's on Al.

revenge on the fence rider!

Coleman's trying to slip through the cracks.

a good debate should smack him down 10 points.

Where does he stand? nobody knows.

up and down the GOP ticket.

I regret to say that I am a Minnesotan. Regretful only when the names John Kline, Michele Bachmann and Norm Coleman surface.

Norm Colemeleon never misses an opportunity to be self-serving. Never.

I am flat out gobsmacked that Norm's numbers are anywhere near 50 percent. But then, the Toxic Texan has a quarter of the population bamboozled, doesn't he?

Norm is an endangered species. He is on his way out. But for the death of Paul Wellstone, he'd never have been "in" in the first place.

Buh-bye, Normie. Hullo, Al.

I know it's exciting for non-Minnesotans to get all jacked up over Franken, but we do have TWO very good candidates running for the DFL endorsement.

I'll be happy with either one of these guys, but I worry that a Franken loss to Ciresi would somehow be seen as a blow to the Netroots. I think nothing is further from the truth, and either of these guys could kick Norman Bruce Coleman's butt come November '08.

Carol Bronder wrote on September 11, 2007 4:12 PM:

A Franken loss to Ciresi would be a blow to Israel, not the Netroots.

Support Ciresi.

WTF?!? If Franken were Catholic would you type the same thing about Rome? If Franken were Greek Orthodox would you type the same thing about Greece? If Franken were Anglican would you type the same thing about Britian? If Cresi were Jewish what would you type about him? Has Cresi taken an anti-Israel stance?

I am guessing that a little introspection is required . . . AND a review of both Franken and Cresi's positions about Israel.

While I know much more about Franken, either of these guys are fine by me. In fact, if the choice was between Coleman and say a tic-tac-toe playing chicken, I'm sending the chicken to the senate.

I asked Norm Coleman to impeach Dick Cheney. His office emailed me back saying that he respectfully disagrees that Dick Cheney has done anything impeach-worthy.

I emailed him back: Al Franken.

Jim Miller wrote on September 12, 2007 2:28 PM:

Both DFL candidates bring the likelihood of defeating Coleman. But if if comes down to a debate, it will be Ciresi, and not Franken who comes out if front. I've seen them both in action, and it is clear that Ciresi is better researched, more articulate, and closer to the positions of Minnesota voters.

"A blow to Israel"...? Come on Carol, you sound like a biggot, and I know you're not!
