New Romney Ad: Mitt Is "Leading The Opposition" To Ahmadinejad
The battle among GOP pols to see who can most successfully milk Ahmadinejad's New York visit for political gain continues apace today with a new radio ad just released by the Romney campaign. It claims that he's "leading the opposition" to the Iranian President's visit. Give it a listen:
We think this is the first use of the visit in a political ad by any of the GOP Presidential candidates. The 60-second spot hits the radio waves today in Iowa and South Carolina, and then hits Florida later in the week.

Yet again, given how Republicans are running to the right, this is not very surprising (remember Huckabee's anti-condom rant or Brownback's anti-abortion move?) DrexelDem wrote on September 24, 2007 11:28 AM:
Daniel, to be fair, Huckabee and Brownback aren't running to anywhere. They are pretty obviously actually that far right, not panderers.

I gotta say I'm not thrilled with my governor here in Illinois but living in MA under Romney would be enough to turn anybody off state politics. Reading about that self congratulating clown must have been excruciating.

Amazing that Romney thinks all Iranians are the same and that all of their parties are too. Khatami's party, the ACC, is quite moderate (by Iranian standards) and has always opposed Ahmadinejad's party, the ISE.
That he'd just lump them together shows that Romney is all heat, no light.

What a joke Mitt is, what kind of joke is obvious.
I thought the GOP candidate was supposed to want to hunt the terrorists down and kill them with his bear hands, not deny an Iranian leader a police escort when visiting Cambridge. The U.S. State Department actually requested the security for Khatami, making it even more ridiculous for Romney to have denied it (in the end the Boston Police Dept provided security for the event).
As Stephanie Miller would say, Romney subscribes to the Paris Hilton school of diplomacy (Khatami knows what he did, and I'm not talking to him until he apologizes).
Here's some coverage from the time:

Thomas wrote on September 25, 2007 3:01 AM:Wow. This ad has everything. Romney confesses to willful negligence to encourage violence, perhaps assasination. Romney admits to a violation of the Logan Act. Romney pretends to set US foreign policy. Romney provokes both Iranians and the Iran government. He will go up in the polls!
Well, not if they call me. I'll go with Ron Paul.

The GOP's Iraq surge plan calls for political "reconciliation" amongst a myriad of groups that have developed bitter hatred for each other as a result of a series of historic and recent atrocities. Yet Romney appears to take pride in fostering a spirit of petty obstructionism against what is essentially nothing more than a theoretical enemy in comparison.
Just so I’ve got this straight, an Iraqi is supposed to support entering into meaningful dialogue with a group that just raped his wife and burned his children alive while Romney, Bush and others stick to their refusal to “negotiate with terrorists” whenever the prospect of reconciliation with a potential adversary is raised in relation to any of their positions? Just what in heaven’s name do they think they are asking Iraqis to do?
