Mark Warner Announces Candidacy For Senate

Former Governor Mark Warner (D-VA) has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, seeking the seat of retiring GOP Senator John Warner. "I've decided the way I can contribute the most to getting our country back on the right track is to serve in the United States Senate," Warner says in an online video:

Warner has put up the beginnings of a campaign site, MarkWarner2008.com, though as of yet it only has his announcement video, a contribution page, and a sign-up sheet for future updates.

This is obviously great (albeit not surprising) news for Democrats. The polls in Virginia are great, Republicans are going to split, and Democrats have many pick-up opportunities at this point. Check out these Senate Rankings.

Can he dig up a bunch of old "Re-Elect Warner" signs?

Warner was an outstanding governor (I'm a Virginian; I was there), but it hurts to hear that 'bipartisan' Lieber-like cant in a prospective Democratic Senator.

Sorry, lockean, but Warner is smart. He knows that a continued partisan mindset is the fastest way to continue the logjam, alienate voters, and create partisan potshots.

Wish more candidates, on both sides of the aisle, would learn to "play nice."

This country has devolved into factionalism so bad it will take us decades to undo the Bush years.

Yes, we need a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress, and a Democrat in the WH -- but we don't need to get there by demonizing the other side ourselves; their own actions have done that quite sufficiently, and voters have the message.

This announcement places the GOP seat in jeopardy.

As a resident of the Commonwealth for most of my life, I've had plenty of time to survey his work. And, as a moderate, I've been very impressed. There are people whose words of 'bipartisanship' I doubt - I'd pick names but I'm not out to change the subject. Suffice to say, Warner is not one of these people, and pending some catastrophic change in the look of things, he's got my vote.

As for Davis, he's been very good at running as our R-House member in Fairfax County for ages, and he's never made his Christian Scientist beliefs a political issue, that I've noticed. He's done plenty for the County, but that's sort of why I don't care for the notion of him being in the Senate. He's been passionate and strong in local issues, but he's not an ideas guy, and he's been a lockstep vote in the House with respect to most national bills. I'd much rather keep him in the House, where I'm happy with his track record thus far, and a newer representative wouldn't carry the same clout.

He'd be my pick over Gilmore, though, who had a mediocre Gov'ship here scrapping over the car tax and little else. While he'll be popular in the counties south of Prince William, Warner has concentrations in Richmond and Fairfax/Loudoun, not to mention the Tidewater region - they are going to go his way in strong numbers. He's just a popular get-things-done guy here in the Old Dominion. I don't see him losing.

I'm definitely looking forward to Larry Sabato's review of this upcoming battle in his backyard! A great read every time.
