Idaho Rep. Bashes GOP Leaders For Abandoning Craig

Representative Mike Simpson (R-ID) lashed out at Senate Republican leaders for their treatment of his Idaho colleague, Senator Larry Craig (R).

"I hope I never stub my toe and they throw me under the bus," Simpson said in The Hill. "It kind of makes you wonder what party you want to be a member of."

Simpson also pointed out that there have been other scandals in the Senate GOP conference, and those members have not been forced to resign. "They have people over there in far worse trouble that they haven't said a thing about," he said, referring to Senators such as Ted Stevens of Alaska and David Vitter of Louisiana.

Simpson also said he does not want the appointment to Craig's Senate seat, and does not even wish to serve in the Senate.

Agreed 100%. Funny how there are some semi-decent Republicans are out there. What happened to Craig defied all notions of due process, not to mention the shocking homophobia exhibited by Republicans. Read more at Campaign Diaries.

A day . . . Okay . . . Several days and dollars short.

And good on Simpson for coming half way to the obvious. There are Republicans who are far worse jack_holes and need to be tossed out and into jail. Law-makers should not be law-breakers.

Craig shoulda been tossed out for the damage he did to the VA.

Are you guys kidding? The only "shocking homophobia" is that demonstrated by Craig himself. This isn't about homosexuality, it's about perversion, which, is exactly what the uncontrolled urge to have public sex in a public bathroom is. (If you doubt it, look up "pervert" in the dictionary).

As for "due process", what's a cop supposed to do? There had been numerous complaints about public sex acts in that bathroom. Are the cops supposed to ignore them? Or does a cop have to actually have sex with someone like Craig in order to arrest him?

Craig's reported actions clearly indicate that he wanted/intended to have a sexual encounter in a public bathroom. That's plenty of reason to arrest him for a lousy misdemeanor. You could argue that posting a security guard in the bathroom might be more efficient, less embarrassing way of preventing lewd activity, but it's an arguable point.

As for the Republicans being homophobes, what's new? Most of them are probably closet cases like Craig, which accounts for the virulence of their hatred.

A. I thought the due process comment referred to the way the Senate and the RNC dumped on Craig. If so, as I far as I know there is no due process in those cases. Those groups make their own rules and if they want to toss a member out, they have that right.

B. Simpson's remarks would have had more weight if he's said them right after Craig's problems became known. Waiting a week and seeing which way the wind is blowing is not so impressive.
