GOPer Walsh: It's Time to Get Out of Iraq

Representative Jim Walsh (R-NY) has returned from a trip to Iraq with a strong message: There is little evidence of any real progress being made there, and America should get out.

"Before I went, I was not prepared to say it's time to start bringing our troops home," said Walsh. "I am prepared to say that now. It's time."

I wouldn't call Jimmy Walsh a back-bencher.

For several years he was a member of the House of Cardinals, chairing what was then the Approp
Subcommittee on the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development, and Independent Agencies -- the third largest of Approp's 13 budgets.

He's also ready to say now that he doesn't want his seat to go democratic as Boehlert's seat did last fall when he retired. Walsh almost got beat and needs to pick up some democratic party votes.

He's called a backbencher because anytime someone on these pages says anything nice or positive about a Republican it must be tempered with a slap. That's the rule.

Will Democrats have the smarts to mention Walsh at least as often as Republicans have brought up Brian Baird in the past few weeks?

And it's a good rule.

that's the barest minimum for what these people deserve for all the death they have inflicted on the world, death for no reason.

Jim Walsh got a personal mention in the NYT Magazine over the weekend, in the article on Americans Against Escalation in Iraq. They said that they were going to target him. Mission Accomplished!

Walsh's seat has been safe for years, except for the last election when he barely squeaked out a victory against Rahm Emanuel's boy. Even after winning, he whined about being disappointed in his constituents because they almost let him lose. That trembling upper lip didn't help matters at all. He needs to up his margins for the next swing, so he's offering some weak day-late/dollar-short criticism of the war, but he hasn't seen any light. What'll be interesting is to watch how many similar long timers also begin to hedge a little bit in apprehension of next year's cleansing. Walsh may very well lose his seat next time, but I'm sure he's not the only one feeling the heat.
