GOP Rep. John McHugh: Forget Retirement Rumors, I'm Running Again

Here's some news that's sure to be greeted with a welcome sigh of relief at the NRCC: despite being the subject of retirement rumors in a recent Washington Post article, Rep. John McHugh (R-NY) has just released a statement saying that he's not going anywhere.

"At this time, I fully expect to be a candidate for re-election in 2008," McHugh says. If McHugh were to retire, his seat, which Bush won by only narrow margins in 2000 and 2004, would vault to the top of the list of Democratic take-over opportunities.

Say what? Bush won his seat in 2000 and 2004? I think you might want to re-phrase that . . .

(Bush may have won the district, but I don't think, as a Texas resident, he would have been eligible to run for a Congressional seat in New York, let alone hold it while he was President. Or is that what they mean by "unitary executive"? The president has a seat in the House, the VP presides in the Senate, and Bush very much wanted either Gonzo or Harriet Miers sitting in for them at the Supreme Court. Presto -- unitary executive as unholy Trinity.)

read it again. "at this time", "i fully expect". that's not exactly the strongest statement ever. there's whole lotta wiggle room there.

At this point, I'd love for there rumors to be floating around about my retirement. With all these Republicans leaving after next year, the GOP might be offering a couple of nice perks for the guys on the fence to stay on. A couple of earmarks here. A possible committee seat there...

McHugh's election has very little to do with Bush, and even little to do with McHugh himself. The only reason he gets elected is his name is on the Republican line on the ballot.

Our district could best be described as "staunchly Republican with no idea why".
