Exclusive: Dem Rep To Introduce House Resolution Condemning Rush Limbaugh On Monday
I've just learned that Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) will be introducing a resolution in the House of Representatives on Monday condemning Rush Limbaugh for his "phony soldiers" remark.
This is significant because it has the potential to dramatically up the stakes in this fight. If the Democratic leadership allows it to go for a vote, it will force all the Republicans in the House to either vote for it, against it, or skip the vote -- and to pass judgment on the powerful conservative talk show host's contention that troops who don't support President Bush's war policies are "phony soldiers."
It will also potentially present the Dem leadership with a not-so-easy choice. Many people will naturally call on the leadership to allow the resolution to come to a vote, which is not necessarily something the leadership might want, since it could look like a tit-for-tat reso in retaliation for the measure condemning MoveOn. It also is potentially problematic for some in the leadership because there is an internal sentiment that it's not Congress' job to go around denouncing the remarks, however reprehensible, of private citizens.
Sources tell us that there's a lot of interest in this resolution among rank and file Dem House members, and that it may come up for a vote soon. There's no guarantee by any means that this will end up happening, though it's likely that there will be some pressure on the leadership make it happen. Udall, whose office confirmed to me that he'd introduce the reso on Monday, has powerful incentive to drum up attention for it as a Senate candidate in Colorado.
Either way, it's a key development, because it has the potential to move this from a rhetorical battle to a legislative one, which would keep the story going. Here's Rep. Udall's "dear colleague" letter, which was leaked to Election Central:
September 28, 2007JOIN AS AN ORIGINAL COSPONSOR OF A RESOLUTION
HONORING OUR ARMED FORCES AND
CONDEMNING RUSH LIMBAUGH'S ATTACK
ON "PHONY SOLDIERS"
Dear Colleague:
On September 26, 2007 the broadcaster Rush Limbaugh told a nationwide radio audience that members of the Armed Forces who have expressed disagreement with current policies of the United States regarding military activities in Iraq are "phony soldiers."
On Monday I will introduce a resolution honoring all Americans serving in the Armed Forces and condemning this unwarranted attack on the integrity and professionalism of those in the Armed Forces who choose to exercise their constitutional right to express their opinions regarding U.S. military action in Iraq.
For more information or to cosponsor the resolution, please contact XXXXXXX in my office at xxxxx.
Sincerely,
Mark Udall
Things could get very interesting next week. More on the media dynamic at play on this story right here at The Horse's Mouth.

However, The Republicans have been playing havoc with this sort of game for years. In the end, the Democrats do the right thing. The smear goes unanswered and we look like a bunch of wimps.
I would go foreward with the resolution. As soon as it passes, I would introduce a second resloution stating that it is not an appropriate use of the legislative process to pass these kinds of resolutions. It does lead to a fair and balanced calling out of the other side in a similar manner as it should to prevent the impression of official approval or condemnation of political speech.

Grow some balls people, or at least get out the way and STFU while the Democrats with some sense of justice slap these people around. Look, this isn't the ideal way for Congress to behave, far from it. Even Republicans, getting hit back, are capable of understanding they do not get carte blanche at obfuscation, dishonesty and hypocrisy. I do not have an objection to the Congress using speech to object to speech by Moveon or Rush. This is what the idea of free speech is all about. Criticism of poor leadership is during a war is important because otherwise poor policy continues to be followed. Provide and maintain a navy;
Make rules for the government and regulation of the land and naval forces;
Provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the union, suppress insurrections and repel invasions;
Provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the militia, and for governing such part of them as may be employed in the service of the United States, reserving to the states respectively, the appointment of the officers, and the authority of training the militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;
It’s time for Democrats and Republicans in Congress to stand up and be ‘counted’, once again. It’s time for them to do what our founding fathers set out for them to do, represent the People of these United States of America.
The Democratic leadership should immediately stop all other proceedings to pass a resolution telling the President of United States and his administration that it would be unconstitutional for them to go to war with any other country, especially Iran, without first going back to the Congress and asking them for a Declaration of War.
If the Democratic leadership and the Republican minority leaders refuse to do this, they all deserve to be immediately impeached for "treason or other high crimes and misdemeanors.
If the Democratic candidates for President in 2008 refuse to push for this resolution, they do NOT deserve to be elected into the highest office of our land. The same goes for the Republican candidates.
Coonsey's View: http://www.freewebs.com/coonsey/
Vote on it! Call you rep. Tell them to tack on a resolution condemning the Republicans calling Vietnam vet Chuck Hagel "Sen. Betrayus."

Universal Health Care will go nowhere until there's a Democrat in the WH, and majorities in both houses of Congress. Even then, I'm not sure, but at least we know we can really blame the Democrats for not passing it under such circumstances. Ending the war has absolutely 0 chance of going anywhere. While I completely agree that those two things would be far better for the nation, if achievable, I really don't think they are at this time. The Republicans need to be humiliated so that their will to obstruct diminishes. At this point, they have no reason to let the Democrats do anything. On one "filibuster" recently, Mitch McConnell actually couldn't supress his laughter when declaring on the Senate floor that he would be opposing the initiative.
Republicans think they are winning this Congressional session because the Democrats haven't been able to pass anything worthwhile, and they've refused to highlight the Republicans tactics to ensure that nothing can get done. They also think they're winning because self-identified Democrats give this Democratic Congress a lower approval rating than they gave the previous Republican Congress.
As far as this being a waste of time, I don't see why it needs to take more than a couple of hours to fully debate the resolution and have it passed. They just finished having the exact same debate over Move On's ad.

What I find much more objectionable than Rush spouting his nonsense here in America, is him getting a platform on Armed Services Radio while liberal voices and liberal blogs are blocked from the troops in Iraq.

What I would like to retort to is that, if we pull -- what these people don't understand is if we pull out of Iraq right now, which is about impossible because of all the stuff that's over there, it'd take us at least a year to pull everything back out of Iraq, then Iraq itself would collapse, and we'd have to go right back over there within a year or so. And --
LIMBAUGH: There's a lot more than that that they don't understand. They can't even -- if -- the next guy that calls here, I'm gonna ask him: Why should we pull -- what is the imperative for pulling out? What's in it for the United States to pull out? They can't -- I don't think they have an answer for that other than, "Well, we just gotta bring the troops home."
CALLER 2: Yeah, and, you know what --
LIMBAUGH: "Save the -- keep the troops safe" or whatever. I -- it's not possible, intellectually, to follow these people.
CALLER 2: No, it's not, and what's really funny is, they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media.
LIMBAUGH: The phony soldiers.
CALLER 2: The phony soldiers. If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve. They want to be over in Iraq. They understand their sacrifice, and they're willing to sacrifice for their country.
LIMBAUGH: They joined to be in Iraq. They joined --
CALLER 2: A lot of them -- the new kids, yeah.
LIMBAUGH: Well, you know where you're going these days, the last four years, if you signed up. The odds are you're going there or Afghanistan or somewhere.
CALLER 2: Exactly, sir."

fuzz wrote on September 29, 2007 10:56 PM:I agree our government has better things to do than condemn morons, but sometimes the political path is a twisty one.
There are many issues at play here. A big one is the media slant to the right. It's more than an annoyance; it has a serious effect on our government and, in turn, our lives. It is an absolutely worthwhile endeavor for our government to work to balance that situation. Can they do it effectively? That's hard to say. The problem, in a nutshell, is that people on the right tend to be easily-led sheep and thus are able to act in unison, while people on the left tend to be free-thinkers with diverse beliefs and opinions. Well, that and the fact that the ultra-wealthy who own and thus control major media outlets tend to lean to the right because assisting the needy does nothing for them except subtract from their profit.
More to the point, though, I think the goal here is to cause an uproar, to cause people on both sides of the aisle to say, "hey, this is a colossal waste of time, let's cut this crap out--it's unacceptable to waste taxpayer dollars making political commentary." And yes, in a perfect world it wouldn't have to go down this way. But in our current reality I'm afraid it does.

"I am not a lawyer, but I take my oath to uphold the constitution very seriously, and I understand why many Americans believe the current Administration has failed our country. The constitutional grounds for impeaching and removing a Vice President must be specific and ought to come from considered investigation by the House Judiciary Committee. That committee has not such taken action. Based on what I know now, I am not persuaded that it would be good for our country for the House to take up a divisive impeachment proceeding against the Vice President. I opposed going to war in Iraq and disagree with many other policies of the Bush Administration, and will work to change those policies. But I think those changes should come through the normal legislative and political processes, rather than through impeachment."
He had a similarly weak response regarding impeaching AG AG. His usual tagline on responses to messages to him is a cumbayah of "I see my job as being about more than supporting or opposing legislation. I also see it as a chance to try to bridge ideological divides and to bring people together to solve problems."

When you posted that partial transcript, you conveniently forgot to include the next few transcripts.
Here's the rest of the transcript of that segment (before Rush cut to commercial) The last paragraph puts it all in context.
RUSH: You know where you're going these days, the last four years, if you sign up. The odds are you're going there or Afghanistan, or somewhere.
CALLER: Exactly, sir. My other comment, my original comment, was a retort to Jill about the fact we didn't find any weapons of mass destruction. Actually, we have found weapons of mass destruction in chemical agents that terrorists have been using against us for a while now. I've done two tours in Iraq, I just got back in June, and there are many instances of insurgents not knowing what they're using in their IEDs. They're using mustard artillery rounds, VX artillery rounds in their IEDs. Because they didn't know what they were using, they didn't do it right, and so it didn't really hurt anybody. But those munitions are over there. It's a huge desert. If they bury it somewhere, we're never going to find it.
RUSH: Well, that's a moot point for me right now.
CALLER: Right.
RUSH: The weapons of mass destruction. We gotta get beyond that. We're there. We all know they were there, and Mahmoud even admitted it in one of his speeches here talking about Saddam using the poison mustard gas or whatever it is on his own people. But that's moot. What's more important is all this is taking place now in the midst of the surge working, and all of these anti-war Democrats are getting even more hell-bent on pulling out of there, which means that success on the part of you and your colleagues over there is a great threat to them. It's frustrating and maddening, and why they must be kept in the minority. I want to thank you, Mike, for calling. I appreciate it very much.
Here is a Morning Update that we did recently, talking about fake soldiers. This is a story of who the left props up as heroes. They have their celebrities and one of them was Army Ranger Jesse Macbeth. Now, he was a "corporal." I say in quotes. Twenty-three years old. What made Jesse Macbeth a hero to the anti-war crowd wasn't his Purple Heart; it wasn't his being affiliated with post-traumatic stress disorder from tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. No. What made Jesse Macbeth, Army Ranger, a hero to the left was his courage, in their view, off the battlefield, without regard to consequences. He told the world the abuses he had witnessed in Iraq, American soldiers killing unarmed civilians, hundreds of men, women, even children. In one gruesome account, translated into Arabic and spread widely across the Internet, Army Ranger Jesse Macbeth describes the horrors this way: "We would burn their bodies. We would hang their bodies from the rafters in the mosque." Now, recently, Jesse Macbeth, poster boy for the anti-war left, had his day in court. And you know what? He was sentenced to five months in jail and three years probation for falsifying a Department of Veterans Affairs claim and his Army discharge record. He was in the Army. Jesse Macbeth was in the Army, folks, briefly. Forty-four days before he washed out of boot camp. Jesse Macbeth isn't an Army Ranger, never was. He isn't a corporal, never was. He never won the Purple Heart, and he was never in combat to witness the horrors he claimed to have seen. You probably haven't even heard about this. And, if you have, you haven't heard much about it. This doesn't fit the narrative and the template in the Drive-By Media and the Democrat Party as to who is a genuine war hero. Don't look for any retractions, by the way. Not from the anti-war left, the anti-military Drive-By Media, or the Arabic websites that spread Jesse Macbeth's lies about our troops, because the truth for the left is fiction that serves their purpose. They have to lie about such atrocities because they can't find any that fit the template of the way they see the US military. In other words, for the American anti-war left, the greatest inconvenience they face is the truth.
I meant the "next few paragraphs", not "the next few transcripts".
Sorry about that.

How about W. saying that Move On attacked the troops, and the military at large, when they made the Betray Us ad, rather than just the general himself?
