Sympathy to his family.
What's the process for replacing him? Governor appoints? Ohio has a Dem governor now, does it not?
rpg - sorry, I think that's a classless remark.

RPG, horrible thing to say. You're lowering the terms of the debate and doing as much of a disservice to the Democratic cause as you are to the loved ones of the deceased.

rpg: please keep your hate to yourself. My guess is you are a troll trying to place fake comments which is despicable or if you really feel that death is justified simply for sharing an ideology then you are despicable anyway.

All House seats are filled by special election, and the Governor nominates the date for a possible primary and general, depending on Ohio's specific laws, which I don't know.
The Governor only appoints people to fill vacancies in the Senate, a relic of the days when all Senators were appointed, not elected.

I hope Gilmour's death is pretty much aboveboard. I'd hate to think that the guy was murdered for nefarious purposes.

I've seen it widely reported that Gillmor's district is solidly Republican. With the caveat that I don't know the first damn thing about Ohio politics, I thought I'd note that Gillmor's district isn't exactly safe.
Sure, Gillmor trounced his Democratic rival that year, 67-33. But the presidential race was considerably closer, 61-39. In other words, Gillmor's personal credibility in the district likely gave him a boost over his rival, Robin Weirauch, above the basic level of support for his policies. And he won again in a rematch in 2006, but by then his lead had eroded dramatically to 57-43. Even his personal popularity couldn't insulate him from the groundswell of dissaffection with Bush's policies.
There's going to be a special election in the district. In all likelihood, Weirauch will run again. Judging by her website, she's well qualified but not particularly charismatic. No matter. She's got good name recognition after running twice, and turned in a very impressive improvement her second time around. She'll be well funded this time, unlike in 2006, when she was outspent better than 5-to-1. I have no idea what kind of opposition she'll face, but it's tough to believe that, in the present political climate, there isn't at least a good chance that this one tips to the other side of the ledger.

rpg: Have you know shame? The man had a wife and five children. A modicum of decency is in order here.

NOW, that so many hve irresponsibly jumped down my throat for doing my job as a political thinker and strategist, I will respond:
(1) I am NOT a troll.
(2) The Congressman's natural death is, indeed, a said time for his wife, children, & friends. However, it is not appropriately my or your concern to fell sorry for them. It is the job of family & friends.
(3) Our job is to do everything in our power to address the current problems wrought by the Republican Party in the short term and to relegate said party and all conservatives to irrelevancy in the medium & long terms.
(4) Your misplaced vitriol towards AND your inappropriate warm fuzziness (lest you be at social worker) towards the Congressman's wife & children demonstrates the reason most Americans see Democrats as weak and incapable of real leadership -- unfortunately, they are right. If this were not so, American troops would be redeploying from Iraq right now.
(5) You have to make a choice between ending the deaths of thousands of American soldiers in Iraq at the hands of a criminal, Republican Administration and Congress... or make empty platitudes for the survivors of the Congressman whom you do not know.
(6) Until such time as the Congressman's seat is filled by special election, there will be one less Republican vote in the Congress. It may well be that that empty seat will make all the difference in how many more American troops die in Iraq to sate the Republican Party's thirst for war and big money.
Thank you.

Did he and Dunn kill each other during sex? Like they both had heart attacks on the same day.
I guess it's possible he liked women and not men or young boys, right?

RPG:
1. No comment.
2. If you don't feel any sympathy sorrounding his untimely death, that says a lot about you. Please don't dictate to me whether my concerns are "appropriate."
3. I have more than one "job." None of my jobs involve doing everything in my power to obtain any particular result without regard to basic human decency. In any event, reversing the present state of political affairs does not require comments such as yours. In fact, these kinds of comments just make the job more difficult.
4. See 3, above and final comments.
5. No, I don't. You have presented a false choice. Bush uses this sort of ploy all the time.
6. Possible but unlikely. In any event, this point is irrelevant because the seat will remain empty even without you reprehensible comments.
If you are really doing your "job as a political thinker and strategist," please stop doing your job. You are not very good at it.

Jake: You, once again, demonstrate the reason Democrats are considered by a majority of Americans to be weak as you appear ruled your emotions rather that clear, cold analytical thought. Yes, I was incorrent in labeling your concerns "inappropriate," rather they are irrational. I wish you could be concerned with our troops needlessly dying Iraq and the inability of weak Congressional Democrats to bring an end to the debacle. There would be no difficulty in Democrats obtaining enough votes to end the war if they had the gonads to actually attack Republicans. Politics is a contact "sport;" if you are afraid of being hit or hitting, you have no business in the profession. That is the nature of American politics. The genius of Karl Rove is that he gets that. Unfortunately, you don't. I have no problem with warm fuzziness except when it emasculates the Democratic Party.
Finally, every single Democratic strategist immediately reacted to the announcement of the Congressman's death as I did and immediately began re-working our political calculus for the Congress. Simply put, my focus is on the thousands of American troops did not die of natural causes.
