Report: McCain Campaign Induced Soldiers To Violate Defense Department Regulations
Seven active duty Army personnel participated in uniform at a McCain campaign event this month -- in apparent violation of Defense Department rules that prohibit uniformed personnel from engaging in such political activity, today's Boston Globe reports.
A DOD spokesman appeared to confirm to the paper that the soldiers were in violation. But the key to the story is this interview with one of the participants:
In a brief interview after the event, Sergeant First Class Chad Kozdra, the commanding officer at the recruiting station, said he had been approached days earlier about participating in the event by the McCain campaign. He said he supported McCain and had done so in 2000.
"What they were told is that this was a support-the-troops barbecue," not a campaign appearance, said Paul Boyce, a US Army public affairs officer.
In fact, the Globe reports, the rally was part of McCain's "No Surrender" tour of early-primary states, despite the soldiers having been told that this was a "support-the-troops" barbeque.
In other words, it looks as if the McCain campaign induced these soldiers into a situation where they were in violation of DOD regs. A McCain spokesperson denied to The Globe that this was intended as a political event, but an expert in military affairs told the paper that it was a clear violation.

McCain's in a pickle. Does he 'blame the troops' or does he fess to misleading the troops.
'nuff said.

This would be a non-issue if Republicans had not made it an issue when soldiers appeared at anti war rallies.

No the anti-war soldiers have nothing to do with it. The Rethugs have been using soldiers in uniform as props for their aggrandisement from the time we heard "mission accomplished" to various transparent stunts during the 2006 campaign that the Dems called them on. The whole MoveOn bruhaha is just the flip-side of this phony coin. If there is a way they can wrap themselves in the flag, parade with the troops, or hide behind them ala Petraeus, they will do it. With McCain of course desperate times call for desperate measures.

There is a BIG diff...the uniformed soldiers appearing at the McCain rally were blatantly flaunting the rules to support one candidate from one party only, and they should be disciplined.
The uniformed personnel who lent their support to protesting what 3/4 of tbe American public now views as a disaster were NOT supporting any particular candidate, and, therefore, were certainly NOT guilty of any infractions of military (or other) rules and regulations.
This is but a continuation of Republicans' penchant for involving the military openly to try to sway opinions for their failed governance. It is a DANGEROUS ploy to appear in American politics.
McCain is more to be pitied than chastised...the idea of sitting in the White House has, it seems, led him down a fantasy lane where he says or does ANYTHING in his quest for the prize.
Sometimes one has to wonder...who is really behind him.... financially and/or ideologically?

Either way, the McCain campaign USED troops as props, which in itself is disgusting.
Bush has set the bar very low.
