Rudy Hits Back At Edwards Over Recovery Worker Remarks

The controversy over Rudy's claim that he's spent as much or more time at Ground Zero as "most" of the recovery workers has ballooned into a full-fledged campaign issue, with the Edwards and Rudy campaign now trading blows over the remarks.

As noted below, the Edwards campaign hammered Rudy today for the assertion, charging that Rudy's determined to "exploit the memory of 9/11 for political gain."

Now Giuliani campaign spokesperson Katie Levinson has struck back:

"For John Edwards to lecture Rudy Giuliani about September 11 is laughable at best. This is, after all, the same guy who thinks the 'war on terror' is simply a bumper sticker," she said.

Nobody lectures Rudy about September 11, you see, because he owns it. In fact, he is September 11. He and the disaster have merged into one.

With regard to the Rudy campaign's dismissal of Edwards' repudiation of the "war on terror" phrase, perhaps it's worth recalling these Rudy remarks from back in March:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani said Thursday it was a mistake to coin the term "war on terror" because it allows enemies to redefine the United States incorrectly as a nation that prefers war...

Giuliani told a gathering of newspaper reporters that "America is seen as a country by too many that wants to have war, or exercises its power too much, pushes its weight around too much."...

"America is just the opposite kind of country," he said.

None of the other Dems, incidentally, has weighed in on Rudy's remarks today.

SWING! and a miss rude Rudy...

This is actually a very smart move by Edwards. He engages the GOP frontrunner on terms that the press can't ignore.

If he can keep this kerfuffle going for several days, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him move up in the polls.

Edwards ought to up the ante by quoting liberally from that Village Voice article and/or getting an endorsement from one of the first responder honchos
criticizing Guiliani in the article. Might be a hard get seeing as they're probably all Hillary fans in NYC but it's worth a shot.

Yep- go after him on his supposed "strength". Good strategy.

Edwards should keep hammering this point. And he ought to point out how cowardly Giuliani is for not addressing what Edwards said in the first place.

The louder Rudy yells, the more it's a sign of the seriousness of this self-inflicted wound.

Edwards did good by throwing salt on it. The others should have also. Rudy deserves no less.

So many wrongly call Edwards a hypocrite, but Giuliani provides a true illustration of hypocrisy as he unabashedly makes millions off the 9-11 tragedy and pretends to be its biggest hero when he is actually its biggest fraud.

Dang that Edwards. Couldn't he have waited until he is the nominee to salt some fresh wounds?

Republicans think Giuliani is the dream candidate to take on the Democrats. Not real bright people.

If we can only get rid of the other skirt for the campaign, what a dream target Giuliani would be.

Rudy Guiliani is a disaster, and it's beyond amusing to watch him take such an amazingly indefensible position. I just hope it's still going on for the general, because statements like this will sink his campaign with leaners and independents, who are the only chance he has to win.

Ronald Reagan fought in World War II, Mitt Romney's sons are fighting in Iraq, and Rudy Giuliani died for our sins on September 11.

Hillary has already said America is safer now than before 9/11, giving tacit approval to Bush's GWOT. Edwards would be smart to make himself the Dem who takes on Giuliani.

Good move by Edwards

Yes, how dare Edwards question both Bush's attempt to exploit 9/11 politicall, and Rudy's attempt to exploit 9/11 politically? You'd think that Edwards was implying that Republicans were exploiting 9/11. Perish the thought.

I'd note Rudy has had to back track on his statement already. Edwards escalasyion of this, along with most of actual responders seems to fit into what Josh calls the 'bitch-slap' theory. Rudy, cosider yourself slapped.

I can certainly be wrong about this (I can't say I understand how Republicans "think"), but I don't think that Democrats should be waiting to hit Giuliani. Those numbers showing how most Republicans still don't realize that he is anti-coathanger or that he moved in with two gay guys while going through his last divorce really make it hard for me to believe that Republican primary voters will be there for him in January (or December, the way things seem to be going with the primary/caucus schedules). If he does get the nomination, his competition will go down in history as the some of the most grossly ineffective campaigns in American history (although, so far they really are all pretty crappy).

Besides, if the Democrats pop Giuliani's balloon on this early, it will have a ripple-effect on the entire Republican ticket no matter who the nominee is because it will pretty much end what's left of people's good feelings toward the Republican Party in relation to 9/11. They all should pile on. Heck, it might even help him in the Republican primary since it could encourage Republicans to circle the wagons around "their man" against those bullying Democrats.
