Rudy Clarifies 9/11 Rescue Worker Comments -- Sort Of

So this morning, Rudy gave a radio interview where he tried to contain the damage from his assertion that he'd been at Ground Zero as much or more than "most" of the workers there. Jason Horowitz of The Politicker has the transcript:

"(W)hat I was trying to say yesterday is that I empathize with them because I feel like I have that same risk. And the way I said it, I probably could have said it better, but what I was trying to say was I was there quite a bit, there are people that were there more than me, people that were [there] less than me. There were people there less than me, people on my staff, who already have had serious health consequences and they weren’t there as often as I was."...

"We should give them everything," he said. "I mean they are heroes in my estimation. And what I was trying to say was even those that were there less than me and the reality is that we’re all in this together and I’m there with them and I feel that I have the same concerns that they have."

So, Rudy's still saying he was there more than some workers, clearly. Is he sticking by his claim that he was there as much or more so than "most" of the workers?

A free TPM Lava Lamp to whoever can parse this one.

The Politicker has the audio right here.

"We should give them everything"? Now someone needs to ask him about what he's done to help the real heroes get the help with health care they deserve.

actually, that's a very good point. time to dig up some clips of rescue workers who weren't given what they needed...

Stay on this Greg. Rudy is a complete fraud. At some point the MSM will start asking questions.

That response by Rudy was unbelievably lame, at least as it appears on the page. I can't imagine the delivery saved it. It reads like he is sputtering. Keep after him on this!

No they won't. They have had all manner of opportunity.

It takes people like Greg and others to keep shouting out.

Not to mention Edwards, of course. :-)

From this weeks Village Voice:

The city had its own test results, of course, and when 17 of 87 outdoor tests showed hazardous levels of asbestos up to seven blocks away, they decided not to make the results public. An EPA chief, Bruce Sprague, sent an October 5 letter to the city complaining about "very inconsistent compliance" with respiratory protection. Sprague, who wrote the letter only after unsuccessful conversations with Giuliani aides, likened the indifference in a subsequent court deposition to sticking one's head "over a barbecue grill for hours" and expecting no consequences. An internal legal memo to a deputy mayor estimated early in the cleanup that there could be 35,000 potential plaintiffs against the city, partly because rescue workers were "provided with faulty or no equipment (i.e. respirators)."
I'm sure that there is a lot more like this that you can dig up Greg.

"We should give them everything," he said. "I mean they are heroes in my estimation. And what I was trying to say was even those that were there less than me and the reality is that we’re all in this together and I’m there with them and I feel that I have the same concerns that they have."

The trouble with this "clarification" is that it indicates a complete lack of understanding of why this is so upsetting to so many people. I hear this and think "Gee, it seems kind of insulting to claim that by standing around on 9/11 and then running the city Giuliani was somehow performing the equivalent job as guys who worked endless shifts digging through asbestos covered rubble to find the human remains of their friends, relatives, and neighbors."

But Giuliani seems to think that the big issue is that he somehow implied that those workers who worked less than he did at Ground Zero are not also Giulianni-esque heroes and that was what was so troublesome to people. Once he clarifies that everyone can be heroic together (even if he's in the upper tier of heroics) this issue should all go away. In fact this just makes it even worse -- the issue is that you were NOT a rescue worker and not performing even remotely the same task as them and to imply otherwise is to exploit and trivialize their sacrifices.

Look, I went to school every morning right by Ground Zero for two years after the attack. A lot of people in the neighborhood who weren't first responders DID get sick (although not on the same scale -- the numbers are beyond awful for people who worked on the pile itself early on). But does that mean I'm somehow "one of" the Ground Zero workers who actually dug us out of this horrifying mess? Or that I can claim that because I was there two years but a FDNY worker was there for the first two weeks I'm somehow in another league? Of course not, you'd think I was insane if I suggested such a thing. But to Giuliani this apparently doesn't even occur to him. Standing around buildings is no different than doing something about it.

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

Demand release of Rudy's medical records, on the grounds that he might be facing 9/11-cleanup related ailments!
