Poll: Overlapping Majorities Say We Can Win In Iraq — But Won't

Here are some more interesting results from the new CNN poll out today:

Do you think the United States is winning or not winning the war in Iraq? Is winning 32% Is not winning 63%

Do you think the United States can win or cannot win the war in Iraq?
Can win 54%
Cannot win 43%

And do you think the United States will win or will not win the war in Iraq?
Will win 42%
Will not win 55%

So let's crunch the numbers. A majority believe we can win in Iraq — up from 46% in March. On the other hand, a majority also think will not win. This leaves 12% of respondents who believe we can win in Iraq, but ultimately will not.

What sort of beliefs does this group hold? How many think victory is theoretically possible, but not worth the trouble? How many think victory is possible, but don't think the Bush Administration is competent enough to deliver? And how many think victory is within our sights, but that it won't happen due to dissent at home?

It's simple, a majority still believes we're the United States of America and we can do anything we set our minds to but we also believe everything George Bush touches dies.

This has been another edition of simple answers to simple questions.

well, I t5hink a lot of people are deeper than poll questions.
Define "win"? Everyone but quislings dead? Well, yeah, we can kill everyone, and "win", but why would you want to.
Does "win" mean an Iraq left to its own devices, free of foriegn occupation? Then, yes we can "win", but, so far, dosnt look like we want that sort of victory.
Poll questions assume you are basically a nitwit who thinks in terms of talk radio or TV news....and 9 times outta ten, if you think proposal A is as stupid as proposal B, you cant say that, you can only be "dont know, undecided".

There has always been a segment that believes the only reason we failed in Vietnam is that the American people lost the will to win. By the way, General Petraeus is a leading advocate of that theory.

I guess I'm one of those crazy people but I fall into the Wes Clark camp on this. I think there are things we can do to leave Iraq in much better shape than it is now if we had a diplomatic strategy. We're not going to leave an American style democracy (whatever that is), but we can leave the country in a fragile, non-civil war state that it is in now.

Do I think we'll do that? With this administration, no way. Could it be done at this point by someone competent? Maybe, maybe not.

By our men and women soaking up all the bullets and explosives you think?

We are the problem, not the solution.

It is rather comical that you think we can transplant our culture onto the Cradle of Civilization.

ARe you really that absurd? Not all solutions are military. But I guess you're so smart that you don't have to consider other tools the US can use. If someone doesn't follow your talking points completely, they want to just let the troops die.

Is this what you consider dialog and argument? Bravo *sound of one hand clapping* Bravo.

Yes.

Not all solutions are military.

Whoop-te-do.

I give you a Bulwer-Lytton award for the dredging up the most tired aphorism on earth.

I guess you're so smart that you don't have to consider other tools the US can use.

It is normally helpful when one expounds on a subject to know something about it.

As in Vietnam, our D.C. geniuses dispense with knowledge of the people and places and substitute guns and bombs and military tactics.

The end result is not good, not good at all.

I understand that when Bush invaded Iraq he didn't even know that there was warfare all over the Middle East between Sunni and Shias. The Shiites and Sunnis have alternated, even among those who have known there was some - umm - illwill, as the chief boogeymans.

That is hardly all there is to know though it is plenty for Joe Biden, who thinks the world is binary like the high speed idiots. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. Even Joe Biden looks like a genius compared to Hillary and other armchair warriors.

Socrates said he was the smartest man in the world because he was the only one that knew he knew nothing.

You might cogitate on that occasionally before making pronouncements about that which you have not bothered to even think before showing your contempt for others who are trying their meager best.

Just a suggestion.

I've read through this three times now and I still don't see a point to it, beyond using big words in a ridiculous attempt to look intelligent.

You've said nothing. "Your understanding" about Bush is fantastic, and Joe Biden's binary comprehension is simply adorable.

Next time, Terry, why you at least provide an intelligible response with some form of substance. People like it more than asshattery.

Best, a fellow thesaurus owner.

Thank you so much for your efforts.

Now I will offer you a helping hand.

The next time you run into a big word of more than one syllable try looking it up on an online dictionary. If "dictionary" has way too many syllables for you, try a copy and paste.

In furtherance of your education, I suggest the possibility that if you want to know about Sunnis you seek out Sunnis for information rather than some Washington expert who doesn't know Sunni from Shia.

The majority of Iraqis want to kill our men and women and some do their level best including blowing themselves up to do so. That is not a good place for our men and women to be no matter how much we want their oil and no matter what Hillary and Biden and other hawks think. Those who think such a place is good to stay should go there themselves in place of our men and women who would rather live in America than die Iraq.

I tried to use as few syllables as possible but I get sloppy sometimes. One can only try. Hope you got it. It does one a lot of good to understand others even when they use big, multi-syllable words.

Thank you again for all your efforts. You should prove an inspiration for many.

Best, Terry
