Michael Moore Wades Into Rudy Firefighter Controversy

The firefighters working to derail Giuliani's presidential ambitions have gained a powerful new ally: Michael Moore.

Moore has now released a new video directly taking on Rudy on behalf of the firefighters, pointing to their complaints of faulty radios, the placement of a command center in the World Trade Center after the 1993 bombing, and inadequate health care for 9/11 related illnesses.

"Hello, Mr. Giuliani, it's Michael Moore. Remember me?" the filmmaker begins in the video. Visibly angry, he concludes with a direct plea to Giuliani to meet with the firefighters and address their complaints: "Those 9/11 heroes, a lot of them are suffering right now, a lot of them need medical care and you have refused to help them, in fact you have refused to even talk to them."

The vid is significant because Moore's notoriety could succeed in drawing more attention to the firefighters, who have been trying to take on Rudy mainly through free media. If Moore keeps this up, he could get them lots more of it.

If the purpose is to really get Il Rudi to talk with the rescue workers, this isn't the way to go about it: were Michael Moore to release a video asking the Republican candidates to not litter, you'd probably see Giuliani, Romney, TV's Fred Thompson, et al throwing trash on the lawn in front of every camera.

Of course, that isn't the purpose: it's to expose Giuliani's shamelessness, hypocrisy and endless eagerness to exploit the tragedy of 9/11 for his own ambitions. In that sense, I hope Moore does keep it up.

The firefighters are right. I lived there on 9/11: Rudy talks a good game; too bad he's not half as competent as the guy he plays on TV.

I also remember Rudy threatening to not leave office around the time Mike Bloomberg was elected mayor because NY "needed" him or something. Words cannot express what a relief it was when Rudy Mussolini backed down and Bloomie became mayor.

You want to talk about the unitary executive? A Giuliani presidency would be like Shrubbie's term of office, on steroids. The man does not care about the rule of law, only about self-aggrandizement. He is, to wit, the worst possible choice at a time when GOP blows against the Constitution are increasingly frequent, and increasingly powerful.

Unfortunately, this will lead some people to dismiss the firefighters meritorioius attacks out of hand. Rudy is likely glad Moore is getting involved with them.
