We all know how well Petraeus succeeded in training and equipping those Iraqi troops.

I think Petraeus did such a lousy job, the Pentagon became alarmed at the prospect of one of its rising stars going down in flames. So Petraeus got hauled back to the US to "write" a counterinsurgency manual that was a re-hash of every other counterinsurgency manual ever written.

General Petraeus is a nice-looking guy and all but he's never actually accomplished anything as far as I can tell.

you have yet to realize there are two Iraqs, the Iraq that Bush, his supporters, and the neo-cons see, which can be likened to OZ, and the Iraq of rational people, reality Iraq.

If Petraeus succeeds in Iraq, and a Republican wins in 2008, Bush will be viewed as a successful president. I like the odds.

Given that so many Democrats believe the war is lost and the situation in Iraq hopeless, the huge succeses in Anbar province, as well as the July report showing some measureable successes in Iraqis meeting their benchmarks is proof that petraous has already succeeded beyond their expectations -- which were zero to impossible.

That won't sway the democrats any as they (and their friends in the liberal MSM) will continue to hammer home the bleakest, most hopeless picture possible because they have so much invested in America's defeat.

As Reid alluded to the past few months, It's politically advantageous for the Dems to continue to undermine the surge strategy, tell our troops (and the world) there is no hope and the war is already lost while at the same time emboldening our enemies, and giving them hope.

As for the 2008 Presidential election- the outcome is far from certain. For example, If the GOP fielded a populist like Giuliani against Hillary, the democrats would be in a lot of trouble -- and risk losing states like NY, NJ, PA and California to the GOP.

The past cannot be changed. Trying to link justification for the war, with casualties, but no attempt to bring the consequences of defeat into the equation means that you are arguing that the US deserves to be defeated, that Americans deserve to die, that the US deserves whatever atrocities happen to it as result of defeat and withdrawl.

The only thing that is relevant to the equation is the situation we are faced in Iraq with now -- either you believe that staying in Iraq will lead to more dire consequences, or you believe leaving Iraq will lead to more dire consequences. But arguing that the US is deserving of dire consequences because it lacked justification for the war is, besides not true, simply reprehensible.

Four Hundred Thousand brave American servicemen gave their lives in WWII to defend America and build a better world, one where wars of choice as a tool of statecraft among Great Powers was forbidden. Now states have violated this rule since it was established, but never without cost or international disapproval; it was the practice of tin pot morons (Argentina 82) or evil empires (USSR 80). Yet with one hasty move Bush, his enablers and the American Conservative movement have lowered forever the threshold by which a Great Power can wage unilateral war. I can see China invading Taiwan and using the Iraqi precedent as justification. American conservatives have destabalised the international system, possibly forever, and this will bear bitter fruit for the genrations to come.

As for the implementation of this illegitimate enterprise; a mountain of facts laugh in your face Bowa. Too much is known about the failures, follies and stupidities of the occupation of Iraq for any rational or honest individual to call it a success. The books have been writen. The interal pentagon memos have been leaked, we all know it is a fiasco.

Staying has made sunni extremism stronger, not weaker. Osama has rebuilt in Pakistan while we are fighting in Iraq and is decending on Musharrif. Staying did not make the Iraqi political parties come to a deal. Staying did not stop the Shia Sunni Civil War from growing. Staying is costing the US 20 billion a month. Staying is chewing up the US Army and Army reserves. Staying has pinned the US and made us weaker as the army's strategic margin of manoeuvre is gone. It has come to a point where strategic withdrawl has become an iron necessity. Yet for political reasons, for reasons of pride and ass covering you and your fellows will justify all kinds of irrationalities so that we can stay engaged, our hand clutching the electric fence, until January 20 2009, when the problem falls to another, preferably Democratic Party, administration.

Then you are basically agreeing with your liberal 'enemies' 98.6% of all abortions in the US are perforemed before the end of the second trimester. 86.7% are preformed in the first trimester. Fetal viability for successful premature birth is 28 weeks. The threshold is 25 weeks, where only 50% of premees survive and the 50% that do are at elevated risk for severe mental and physical handicaps.

Whereas "pro-choice with restriction" Republicans like Rudy Giuliani and Arnold Schwarznegger have received widespread national attention and are succesfully pulling the party to the middle, there are no nationally known democrats who support anything but abortion on demand. At least, none that I'm aware of. The two major figures in the democratic party right now -- Obama and Hillary -- both agree that there should be no restrictions placed on a woman's right to abort right up to birth.

If anything, you are letting the ennemy dictate your strategy on his terms. The strategic choice to enter Iraq to 'show the Jihadis we are serious' was a piss poor one.

You certainly have a right to your opinion. However, considering that we forced Al-Quada to to expend huge amounts of their resources to confront us in Iraq or risk watching a Muslim democracy flourish in their own backyard -- I would say that al-quada isn't dictating the strategy - the US is.

Thanks, Jan.  We live in a fantasy world.  Sometimes I think it would be easier to give in to the fantasy.

You are dishonest.  If you believe this:

Someone who is truly pro-choice doesn't use terms like  abortion on demand because such a person realizes that it is simply inflammatory rhetoric that anti-choice zealots use as they hold up posters with pictures of fetuses.   As much as you would like to imprint the image of a woman DEMANDING AN ABORTION even the most deluded of you knows that is not the case.

The demands come later; that unwanted child can't get health insurance or any other governmental help.  The demands from Republicans to lower taxes for the wealthy is the main demand we all hear.  The whole point is to punish women for having sex; their little bastards deserve what they get.  At least their mothers didn't get off the hook by having safe abortions.  So we raise yet another generation of at-risk kids.  And the beat goes on....
