Obama Takes In Over $10 Million Online In One Quarter
Here's another amazing number from Barack Obama's second-quarter fundraising: Of his $32.5 million, $10.3 million was raised online. Compare this with the Howard Dean campaign last cycle, which took in $25 million online for the whole campaign. Obama, by contrast, is now at a total of $17.2 million raised online in just two quarters, counting the $6.9 million raised online last quarter — making it almost a given that he'll beat the $25 million mark next quarter.
And as for Howard Dean's total of about $50 million for his whole campaign? Obama has already exceeded that total in overall fundraising, taking in about $57.5 million so far.

All good news for Obama and Dems in general.
Comparing this to Dean's pioneering effort is hardly apples to apples though.

Very impressive, without question.
Wonder what the Republicans think of it?
Then again, our top three have pretty much left the entire GOP field in the dust haven't they?

Oh, the opportunity cost of it all...not just Barak O's, everybody's.
There's just GOTTA be a better way.

Yeah, but when Dean did it, it was news. For my money no one will ever match the Dean campaign as a come-from-out-of-nowhere Cinderella story. The power of the Internet as an aggregator for small contributors has since been so thoroughly proven it's no particular surprise anymore when a darling of online activists puts up big numbers from small donations. Anyone have any sense for where the other two thirds of Obama's Q2 money came from? It'll be interesting to see who's been writing out those big checks.

I was at the initial organization meeting for Obama in Syracuse, NY, that was a little distant for us.
A couple announced that they would be holding a wine and cheese tasting party a month later to raise funds.
We get regular updates on progress though we have had no further part in the effort. There have been various gatherings, canvassing, a trip to New Hampshire.
I suppose there have been donations as the group grew that also did not go through the internet but the internet was instrumental in bringing the people together.
Obviously there is a combination of political organization, footwork and internet involved but the internet surely had a hand in getting things moving.
Best, Terry

I was on the steering committee of a group here in Portland, Oregon that put together a Fundraising/Organizing party for Obama last week. Without any help from the campaign, and with only a State Senator down from Washington State, a couple of activists, and lil'ol me as our guest speakers, we sold 75 tickets at $50 a pop, held a raffle, and netted $5,000 for the campaign. We have thirty commitments for Barbeques for Barrack this summer and volunteers to help organize Obama's first visit to Portland in the fall.
I organized a couple of House Parties for Dean in 2003, but this was definitely an order of magnitude larger. It is amazing how much talent and energy is out there. The entire event was self-generating and the vast majority of people had little or no political experience. If the same sort of thing is happening all over the country, we are talking about the beginnings of a movement.
