Hillary And Kerry Team Up To Force The Pentagon's Hand

Looks like Hillary's now trying to force the issue with the Pentagon -- she's just revealed that she will be authoring legislation, with Senator Kerry, that would force the Pentagon to brief Congress on any plans it has drawn up for pulling out of Iraq in the event that Congress mandates it.

This demand on Hillary's part to see the Pentagon's contingency plans for withdrawal -- which she first made in May -- was what sparked Under Secretary of Defense Eric Edelman's dismissal of her query as aiding and abetting the enemy, a story that exploded yesterday. That, in turn, led to Hillary's stinging response to Defense Secretary Gates today.

Now the battle continues. More after the jump.

Clinton spokesperson Philippe Reines emails:

Senators Clinton and Kerry will join forces on legislation to require a report and briefing from the Pentagon to Congress on contingency planning for withdrawal from Iraq.

This legislative effort is a direct result of Under Secretary Edelman's unacceptable response. Senator Clinton sent a serious letter on a matter of national security to the Secretary of Defense, and in response, received an unacceptable and alarming political attack from an under secretary.

Hillary and Kerry will brief the press on the new initiative this afternoon.

As Ben Smith observes, this could actually end up being the first anti-Iraq War legislation signed into law -- no small thing. It also deftly advances Hillary's political goal of keeping alive the fight with Edelman, which is hands-down a political winner for Hillary.

After all, given Hillary's imperatives within the context of Dem Primary politics, Clinton spokesperson Howard Wolfson himself probably couldn't dream up a better storyline right now than "Hillary dukes it out with the Pentagon over Iraq."

I think this bumbling attack on Hillary by another putz of an Administration flunkie, promises to work out pretty nicely for her. Edleman really is no match for Hillary in matters such as this; this is her game. I'd love to see her drag Gates and a Pentagon weenie to the Hill.

what's amazing is that edelman probably didn't think he was attacking her. he probably thought he was just making a routine observation that no one would even think to argue with

Edelman handed her a campaign issue on a silver platter when he sent that letter. Good for her on taking the initiative to make a big deal about it. All the better for her if she takes a step towards ending this war in the process.

Good point, Greg. I was wondering about that. Picking a fight with her makes no sense, so he probably didn't even realize he was doing it.

Isn't that just another way of saying "hubris"?

I don't know, I would think he would have some small kernel of self-awareness of the possible political repercussions of such a ridiculous statement to one of the most prominent Dem Senators and a presidential candidate. She's a Clinton, for goodness sake. Why sent her an answer that is basically just mouthing off?

However, the other answer is that Edelman is just really stupid, and I view that as almost equally plausible.

Keep in mind that her deauthorization amendment, contrary to Obama's claims, is probably one of the best out there. Even if we mandated troop withdrawal Bush could use AUMF to invade Iran (he's used AUMF for a whole host of things). Clinton gets a lot of crap, some deservedly, but she's much more savvy and astute than she gets credit for.

Stopping a war with Iran should be just as important as getting us out of Iraq, contrary to what I hear from some of my anti-war friends. Trading one war for another is not a victory.

We were talking about direct mail earlier, and seeing Kerry's name back in the news reminds me that he is sitting on what the 2008 Dem candidates must view as a potential fundraising pot of gold, i.e. his list of donors from the 2004 campaign.

If anyone gets their hands on that list, they are going to have a huge spike in donations. Wouldn't surprise me to see the 2008 candidates starting to say some nice things about him as their campaigns start to realize it.

Consider this idiocy in connection with the Republican members of Congress refusing to put any real distance between themselves and Bush on the war. And look at the polls on the war the ones that say the American public very definitely wants us to get out of Iraq.

Now a member of the administration attacks Hillary over whether they should even have plans to get out. All in all, the Republicans are committing the most monumental act of political suicide imaginable.

Actually, it's not imaginable. You couldn't make this stuff up.

The Bush gang has responded to Democratic questions like this for years now. Edelman's letter is right in line with the standard GOP talking points. We've heard this over and over again, and I see no reason to think that Edelman's response is in any way strange.

The difference is, this time Clinton used some clever jujitsu to turn the GOP talking points to advantage.

Smith does not elaborate - how does this ever get signed into law?
