New York Times: Fred Thompson's PAC Mostly Paid Out To His Son, Not Candidates
In this morning's New York Times report about Fred Thompson's sons' lobbying work, this nugget is buried at the bottom: "In the last two elections, the committee paid Daniel Thompson more than $170,000 in consulting fees, compared with less than $70,000 it paid toward supporting Republican political campaigns." Election Central placed a phone call and an e-mail to GOP consultant Mark Corallo, who has represented Thompson to the media, but our requests for comment have not been answered.

Richardson Goes Where No Candidate Has Gone Before: Marlow, New Hampshire
Bill Richardson may be accomplishing a new feat in presidential campaigning: finding a stretch of land in New Hampshire that no candidate has visited before. Richardson will be visiting the small town of Marlow, with population of 747, in what his campaign says is the first ever such visit to the town. "The New Hampshire primary is about meeting voters one-on-one, looking them in the eye and answering their questions," Richardson said "It’s about time the people of Marlow had an opportunity to directly participate in this process."

Lieberman On Militarist Roll, Says Iran Has Declared War
After bolstering his militarist credentials on the Sunday talk show circuit, Senator Joe Lieberman was at it again today in a written statement, saying that "the Iranian government has by its actions declared war on us." Lieberman added a withdrawal from Iraq "will give Iranians exactly what they want most," an "epic victory for Iran, Hezbollah, and the forces of Islamist terrorism."

In Nebraska, Bruning Raised Over $720,000 For The Quarter
Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning (R) announced that he has raised $721,200 for his pro-Iraq War primary challenge against Senator Chuck Hagel. Hagel's second-quarter numbers have not yet been released, but it is widely rumored that he might not seek re-election — and if he does, Bruning is ready to challenge him for the support of Nebraska's conservatives.

Tancredo: Deporting 12 Million "Not Impossible"
Tom Tancredo said today that he thinks deporting 12 million undocumented immigrants is "not impossible." This however, he suggested, was not the most prudent approach to the immigration issue, which he has made the sole focus of his campaign. A crackdown on employers is his preferred strategy."It's attrition through enforcement,"he said.

Club For Growth Launches Preemptive Strike On Bloomberg
Club for Growth president Pat Toomey has penned an opinion piece in today's Wall Street Journal, criticizing New York Mayor's Michael Bloomberg for his record on taxes. The leader of the anti-tax PAC says Bloomberg's fiscal policy is closer to the Democratic Party, "to which he belonged not so long ago" — thus dubbing Bloomberg a member of a new category, the FRINO: Former Republican In Name Only.

Stuart-Keller Rematch In Florida's 8th District
Democratic marketing consultant Charlie Stuart announced today that he will once again vie against Republican Rep. Ric Keller in Florida's 8th District. Stuart lost the Orlando-area district 53 to 46 percent in 2006 but said he expects to benefit from improved name recognition and high turnout due to the presidential race. "The conditions for me winning the race are significantly better than they were last year on many levels," Stuart said.

Ann Romney Defends Mitt On The Dog Story
Mitt Romney's wife Ann posted a blog entry on the campaign's Web site Saturday night, defending her husband over putting their dog's cage on the roof of their car almost 25 years ago. "Surprise, surprise, the media didn't get the dog story right," Mrs. Romney wrote. "Our dog Seamus rode in an ENCLOSED kennel, not in the open air. And he loved it. Every time he saw it, he jumped up on the tailgate, walked in, and lay down. It was just like the kennel he curled up in at home."

What's an "ENCLOSED" kennel look like? If it was enclosed, why did Mitt need to add a "windshield" to it?

If Seamus liked it so much, why did he crap all over the rear window of the car?

Why are you blaming the media when it just reported what your husband said about the trip?

Ann Romney: Quite possibly too stupid to be first lady. An extremely difficult standard to meet, but I believe she's done it here.

Did *anyone* reading this story think the dog was actually tied to the roof? No. And what's up with the "enclosed" kennel? All kennels let some amount of air through -- otherwise Seamus would have suffocated. Finally, who friggin' cares whether they think the dog "loved" it -- would anyone excuse them for tying Tagg to the roof in a box even if Tagg thought it was just terrrr-ifffic? No.

What's appalling about this story is that they still don't get it. How hard would it be to say, "We've learned a lot in recent days, and we'd never do that again." Story blows over. Instead, they can't admit to a mistake this obvious. It bodes extremely badly for any (god forbid) Romney administration. We've had more than enough of politicians who believe that consequences apply only to other people...
