Althouse Continues Screaming -- Sorry, "Shouting" -- About Our Rudy Video
Whew -- thanks for the warning, Atrios!
The epithets are still flying over in the Wingnut Animal House over our posting of video the other day of Rudy Giuliani screaming "bulls#$t" at a cop rally 15 years ago, with Ann Althouse leading the snarling pack. They're mad about this post asking them if they still think the Rudy vid is irrelevant now that the larger racial context has been spelled out.
Intriguingly, Althouse again argues in a very, very long post that Rudy Giuliani didn't "scream" in the video, but was merely "shouting." After making that case at length, Althouse then gets real tough:
Now get up off your ass and write a real response to me. I'm sick of these cranked out non-responses that pretend you've suffered no real attack. You have!
Okay! Okay! Uncle! I have suffered a real attack! Hellllllllppp! I'm under real attack! Althouse told me so!
Althouse also adds:
Now, do a proper update and apologize to me.
Er, no?
This really is blog-clowning at its most sublime. Just for the fun of it, let's take a look at the New Oxford American Dictionary definition of the word "scream."
scream |skr?m| verb [ intrans. ] give a long, loud, piercing cry or cries expressing excitement, great emotion, or pain : they could hear him screaming in pain | [as adj. ] ( screaming) a houseful of barking dogs and screaming children. • [ reporting verb ] cry something in a high-pitched, frenzied way: [ intrans. ] I ran to the house screaming for help | [with direct speech ] “Get out!” he screamed | [ trans. ] he screamed abuse into the phone. • urgently and vociferously call attention to one's views or feelings, esp. ones of anger or distress : [with clause ] his supporters scream that he is being done an injustice | figurative the creative side of me is screaming out for attention. • make a loud, high-pitched sound : sirens were screaming from all over the city. • move very rapidly with or as if with such a sound : a shell screamed overhead.
...and from Oxford's thesaurus:
scream verb he screamed in pain shriek, screech, yell, howl, shout, bellow, bawl, cry out, call out, yelp, squeal, wail, squawk; informal holler.
Relatedly, Althouse is also really convinced she's got yours truly nailed. We didn't spell out the racial context for the remark in our original post of the vid -- proving that the only real reason we posted the vid at all was to hurt Rudy on the temperament question and not because of its racial overtones. Meanwhile, the profoundly hapless Ace of Spades blogger, playing Amazat to Althouse's Borat, goes even farther in this regard, claiming that we didn't even know about the racial context and retrospectively pretended we did.
This blog is a good sport, and besides, Althouse's charm is irresistible, so here's a response: Cut the nonsense.

Althouse and sidekick: Just because the racial context wasn't spelled out in the first post doesn't mean we weren't aware of it or that it wasn't at least partly a reason for posting the vid. As a New Yorker, the racial overtones of Rudy's scream were as clear to me as the fact that he was, yes, screaming -- almost not even requiring mentioning. As I learned later from our readers, this context wasn't widely known. If I'd known that the context wasn't understood by readers, I would have mentioned it. End of story. Sorry, you're just gonna have to take my word for it. Or not, I could give a s#$t.
After all, isn't it possible that we saw the vid as significant both because it raised questions about his temperament and because of the racial dimensions? Can't we keep two ideas in our heads at the same time?
When you all attacked the decision to post the vid, dismissing it as meaningless, the Times piece provided a hook to ask whether you'd do follow-up posts on this now that the larger context had been spelled out. That's what this post did -- indeed, it even conceded that the original context should have been mentioned the first time. Was the post barbed? Er, yeah -- you threw down the gauntlet first, remember? This is not complicated. No apology needed.
Now, can we move on to the question of what you think of the fact that a mainstream GOP Presidential candidate shouted "bullshit" twice at a rally and assailed Dinkins in an effort to stir up an audience of rowdy, drinking cops waving signs saying things like "Dump the washroom attendant," without ever denouncing the people who launched these racist attacks?

You know, it strikes me that in this medium, Ann could do more to make her point.
She should tape herself screaming.
Then she should tape herself shouting.
She should label neither but post both.
Put up a poll. Which is the scream, which is the shout?
See if people can even get that right. When the results come in close either way, no matter how she tries to skew it with her acting, she'll know she's just playing a semantic game.
And, she'll waste lots of time on it.

I read about half of her utterly confused "I'm a liberal (voted for Clinton twice, Gore etc)" wingnut rant and I gotta say that woman, man or whatever she is needs to get laid.
